- Spoiler Change: NASCAR ordered an across-the-board, 1 inch increase in the width of the Trucks' rear spoilers, effective immediately. Teams will not have to fabricate new spoilers. NASCAR will provide metal pieces to extend the blades .5in on each end, to 67.75in. Another concern was the driveability of the Trucks, especially with the number of less-experienced drivers in the series. The change will take effect in time for Thursday afternoon's final practice session. - Ruttmann wins pole at Daytona, top 4 are Dodges: Dodge Rams swept the front row for Friday's Florida Dodge Dealers 250 NASCAR Truck series opener at Daytona International Speedway (11:00am/et Friday, ESPN), as veteran #18-Joe Ruttman won his second consecutive pole at Daytona and #2-Scott Riggs took second in Tuesday's first round of qualifying. Ruttman, 56, broke his own record as the oldest pole winner in series history, as he turned a lap at 186.123mph to claim the top starting position. - CTS Practice Speeds: #8-Willy T. Ribbs had the fastest lap in a Monday afternoon practice session for Friday's Dodge 250. Ribbs ran 183.793mph in the day's third session for the trucks. #18-Joe Ruttman led the first session at 183.408mph and #24-Jack Sprague led the second session with the day's fastest lap at 184.676mph. Qualifying for the Truck series race is scheduled to begin today at 3:30pm(That's Racin'). - Daytona Truck Notes: A sponsor announcement yesterday included a bonus for Truck teams that win a race from the pole. The money is coming just in time. Of the 43 Truck teams that entered Daytona, only 20 had true sponsorship. Jack Roush has his company and his Web site on his two trucks. Wayne Spears has his manufacturing company on David Starr's machine. The Baltimore Ravens spiral across the side of Donnie Neuenberger's truck, People Against Drugs highlight Bobby Dotter's and Menards graces John Menard's. This is not exactly the way to make money in racing. The Truck series, cheapest of NASCAR's three main divisions, is facing a lack of sponsor dollars and teams. But money wasn't the only thing on the mind of truck owners yesterday. Only 13 teams made it through technical inspection on Sunday. Yesterday, the opening practice started with nine trucks still trying to gain approval. One team finally withdrew, giving up in frustration after repeated runs past the inspectors. - #86 News: Impact Motorsports, Inc., has scheduled a major team announcement Sunday afternoon at Daytona, unveiling the new primary sponsor and paint scheme for its #86 Ford CTS entry. The official announcement is scheduled for 1:00pm/et, between the A/C Delco ARCA Series race and the Bud Shootout at Daytona. AND from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: In addition to his Winston Cup ownership and driving duties, Derrike Cope will steer the #86 National Wild Turkey Federation Ford in the season-opening CTS race Feb 16. And Cope will make his television debut as an in-studio analyst with Fox Sports Net's weekend pre-race and race wrap-up shows(2-11-2001)
- Barry Bodine in the #25: Impact Motorsports, Inc., has inked a deal with Barry Bodine to drive the #25 trucks in the CTS races at Daytona and Homestead-Miami. Barry, the son of CUP driver Geoffrey Bodine, has competed in 24 previous NCTS events and several BGN events. His current two-race deal with Impact Motorsports will be sponsored by the Miccosukee Indian Gaming Group, which operates a 302-room resort and casino in the Florida Everglades. Additional sponsorship is being sought for the remainder of the CTS season. Bodine, 22, made his CTS debut at age 17 in September 1995 at Martinsville. Bodine will run a Dodge at Daytona and it is planned that the team will run a Ford at Homestead. - Morelock to the #7: John Conely of Conely Racing Team will field the #7 Chevy CTS entry at Daytona with Donny Morelock at the wheel. John Conely runs the operation out of Brighton, Michigan. Donny Morelock of Largo, FL will be behind the wheel of the #7. Morelock most recently competed in several CTS races for Bobby Hamilton Racing. Morelock has a full plate at Speedweeks as he is entered in the ARCA race for James Hylton as well. Morelock is the owner and President of Southern Thunder, which is a driving experience designed for corporate America. The team has the Primary sponsorship secured for Daytona (to be announced at Speedweeks).
