Take it from 'The King"winning five NASCAR races in a row is very, very special. Richard Petty has been there, done that — twice, in fact.
"It's hard enough to run five races in a row without any trouble,"said Petty, whose 1971 streak of five consecutive victories was matched Aug. 1 by NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points leader Ron Hornaday Jr. (#33 Georgia Boot Chevy). Petty won a phenomenal 10 straight races five years earlier en route to his second of seven NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships.
Hornaday goes for a sixth straight winWednesday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. A victory in the O'Reilly 200 presented by Valvoline would give the 51-year-old Californian second alone in national win streaks, moving ahead of Petty and 1983 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Bobby Allison, who also won five straight in 1971.
Petty sees similarity between what Hornaday is accomplishing and Petty Enterprises in its prime. Hornaday is on top of his game but so is Kevin Harvick Inc.
"Right now, their equipment is one notch better than anybody else," he said.
Tom Higgins, the retired motorsports columnist for the Charlotte Observer, calls Hornaday's streak" almost an equal accomplishment to Richard's five-race winning stretch. Petty competed against hard-driving rivals such as the Allison brothers, Bobby and Donnie, Buddy Baker and Chargin' Charlie Glotzbach,"said Higgins." Also in the fields were several colorful, fun-loving characters including James Hylton, Elmo Langley and Neil ‘Soapy' Castles.
"Hornaday would have fit right in with this crowd."
Hylton, still active as he turns 75 later this month, finished second to Petty at the Nashville Fairgrounds in win #4 of Petty's 1971 streak." He's a manhandler; if the (truck's) off, he makes the difference,"said Hylton of Hornaday." He's one tough racer."
"I've had streaks and success before in my career but never anything like this,"said Hornaday, a two-time Bristol winner but not since 1998." Kevin and DeLana give me the best equipment and have allowed (crew chief) Rick Ren to put together the best team. These guys have been together, for the most part, for two solid years and we have a good combination. We have been blessed with lots of success and I hope it continues."
He added," The competition in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series has gotten tougher. It gets harder and harder every year to go out and compete with these guys."
Petty gets the last word on Hornaday's streak." You have to have everything working your way, have faith on your side and you've got to do everything perfect,"he said." I don't think (Ron) will know what it means until it's over; four races, five or 10, whatever. You just go along and do it."

Crew Chief Richie Wauters Returns To #51 Team And Driver Kyle Busch
Richie Wauters returns to the crew chief position for the Billy Ballew Motorsports #51 Miccosukee Resort/Red Top Auto Auction Toyota to be driven this week by Kyle Busch. Doug George, who guided Busch to wins at Fontana and Atlanta earlier this year, will move to the #15 Gateway Pharmaceuticals Toyota of Aric Almirola. Wauters and Busch won the O'Reilly 200 in 2008 and have combined for nine of the team's 12 series victories.
Waters discusses the change and other Bristol thoughts in the following Q&A.
What about this week's changes at BBM?
" Aric (Almirola) and I have built a good chemistry and in one respect, it is difficult due to the friendship we built and it is tough to walk away knowing how close we are to getting to Victory Lane and all that we've worked to build up his solid finishes. On the other hand, it is always great working with Kyle. We have a lot of history and nine wins together. He has unlimited talent and if you give him something to drive, he'll win the race with it and that is what we are hoping to do is go back and repeat the win."Billy Ballew Motorsports generally is thought of as a speedway team.
" I feel our short-track program is better this year. We've done more local track practice to help develop our short-track program. Our intermediate-track program has always been strong but I feel our short-track program this year is just as good, if not better."This week's truck has been fast in the past.
" We are bringing chassis #28 which we ran second in New Hampshire with Kyle last year and we were caught speeding leaving the pits. In Phoenix '08 we led 90% of the laps and pitted at the end and just came up one lap short of the win at the end. We qualified second with the truck at Martinsville this year where we were fastest in practice but we came short on fuel at the end. We took the truck to Memphis and was again super fast finishing fourth and ORP where Aric finished third so we're pretty confident in the chassis and hopefully we'll get it set to where Kyle likes it and we'll repeat what we did in 2008."What's different about racing on concrete?
" Concrete is a rougher surface and is not heat sensitive. It doesn't change from day to night. The track gets black with the more rubber down on it, making the truck tighter."How will Goodyear's tire change affect this week's race?
" I don't know if the softer right side tire should have an overall effect on the grip. It may play into a different pit strategy of pitting twice if the tires wear out. We might have to make two pit stops for tires instead of the usual one and done (one pit stop for the event)."
Etc.:
Eight of 11 Bristol races have been won by drivers starting third or better. The race has been won from the pole three times — most recently in 2006 by Mark Martin and in 1997-98 by Ron Hornaday Jr. Hornaday, who hasn't started worse than fifth in 14 races this season, led all 200 laps in 1997.
Rookie drivers continue to look for their first victory at Bristol Motor Speedway. Scott Speed had a shot a year ago, winning the pole and finishing third. Eventual Raybestos Rookie of the Year Colin Braun (#6 Con-way Freight Ford) finished 34th and said he's learned a lesson or two about driving at the track. " I had a really rough night last year and (it taught me) the balance between patience and aggressiveness,"Braun said.
Last year's race saw Bristol records set for most caution periods (12) and caution laps (69).
Mike Skinner (#5 EXIDE Toyota) broke a winless streak dating to the 1997 season when he broke through at Bristol in 2005. The past four races have seen Skinner lead the most laps — 226 — of any driver.
The O'Reilly 200 has drawn entries from Brad Keselowski (#29 Chevy), Max Papis (#9 GEICO Toyota) and Ken Schrader (#52 Federated Auto Parts Toyota). Keselowski finished sixth at Phoenix last fall in his most recent series appearance. Papis was 10th in his Auto Club Speedway debut earlier this year. Schrader holds the Bristol qualifying record at 126.922 mph.
Loop Data: Eight Reasons Why Hornaday's A Long Shot At Bristol Motor Speedway
Eight statistical categories are factored into the formula that creates Driver Rating.
Since the inception of NASCAR's Loop Data statistics in 2005, Ron Hornaday Jr. ranks first in exactly zero of those categories at Bristol Motor Speedway, including the all-telling Driver Rating stat.
Here's the breakdown, category-by-category:
Wins: Though Hornaday is the only driver with multiple wins at Bristol, both came prior to the inception of Loop Data.
Finishes: Since 2005, he has an average finish of just 17.8.
Top-15 Finishes: Since the four Bristol races since 2005, Hornaday has finished in the top 15 only twice. In 2006, he finished 27th and last season he finished 24th.
Average Running Position: This is weighed most in the formula. Hornaday is seventh-best with a 12.4, which ranks behind notable entries Mike Skinner, Kyle Busch and Todd Bodine, all of whom have an Average Running Position in the Top 10.
Average Green Flag Speed: Hornaday ranks sixth in this category with a 114.860 mph average. Every driver above him eclipses the 115 mph mark.
Fastest Laps Run: Hornaday has run the fastest lap just 19 times at Bristol over the last four years, less than a fifth of leader Kyle Busch's 101.
Most Laps Led: A per-race stat, Hornaday hasn't done it once. In fact, he hasn't led a lap at Bristol in the series since 1999.
Lead Lap Finish: Hornaday has finished on the lead lap in only two of his last four races. He finished 20 laps down in last year's race, running just 183 of the 200 laps.
Driver Rating: All that adds up to a Driver Rating that's a personal worst. Hornaday has a Driver Rating of 85.5, making Bristol his worst track in terms of Driver Rating – a full point lower than his second-worst track, Michigan International Speedway (86.6).
"Bristol has changed. Since they ground the track, it's a lot different. When I was driving for Dale and Teresa (Earnhardt), it was very much move someone out of the way. I learned a lot about that track from Dale,"said Hornaday. "II say that I haven't won a race at the" new" Bristol Motor Speedway."
Wayne's Words: Bristol No ‘Hold-The-Bottom' Track Any Longer
"Bristol Motor Speedway always signals that the home stretch to the championship is beginning. The O'Reilly 200 is the last of three races in the state of Tennessee and in many seasons, it's offered a window into who to watch over the final 11 races.
"Bristol always has provided exciting racing for a variety of reasons. The speeds are fast — almost speedway fast — and both driver and crew chief have to be on the top of their games since one mistake can put a team a lap down on the leaders in the blink of an eye.
"Historically, Bristol was a hold-the-bottom track. You had to be fast enough to keep your rivals behind you but if you weren't, sooner or later you'd get shoved high and track position would go away quickly.
"That's no longer the case since reconfiguration to progressive banking. Drivers now have choices — low, middle or high — and the past couple of races have seen many outside passes for position.
"Speedway-style rim-riding is in the equation now adding a new element to what might in the past have been the only way to defend against the pass.
"That's not to say there won't be plenty of Bristol-style rubbing. There will be.
"Bristol is the last of the three concrete-surfaced tracks on the 2009 schedule. No series driver has won Dover, Nashville and Bristol in the same season but one — Ron Hornaday Jr. — has conquered all three in his career.
"It will be interesting to see if he can win at Bristol for a third time and extend what's become one of the most talked-about winning streaks in recent NASCAR history."

Manufacturers' Standings
The 2009 season hasn't been a great one for Ford. The manufacturer has won just once, when Colin Braun scored Roush Fenway Racing's 50th series victory in June at Michigan.
Perhaps Bristol offers Ford the possibility of redemption. Fords have won three times at the .533-mile track most recently in 2006 when Mark Martin drove Roush Fenway's same #6 F-150 to Victory Lane.
Toyota, one point behind Chevy in a close championship battle, has three wins in the past four Bristol races. Chevy has five victories but none since 2003.

Up Next: Chicagoland
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series welcomes Chicagoland Speedway to the schedule on Aug. 28. The Chicagoland 200 is the first of two inaugural events in back-to-back-weekends. A trip to Iowa Speedway follows on Sept. 5.
The 1.5-mile track has been a part of the NASCAR national scene since its completion in 2001. This year's NCWTS race shares the weekend with the Indy Racing League.
The race also marks the series' first trip back to the area since 2001 when the second of two races were held at the defunct Chicago Motor Speedway in Cicero, Ill.
Winners at the 1.0-mile track were Joe Ruttman and Scott Riggs.
Owner DeLoach Calls Timothy Peters" Breath Of Fresh Air"
Red Horse Racing and owner Tom DeLoach haven't tasted a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory since 2006, but everything points to win #3 being just over the horizon. DeLoach was able to bring aboard Timothy Peters to drive the #17 Strutmasters.com Toyota in mid-June. Success was both immediate and lasting.
Peters, without a top-five finish in 43 starts entering the 2009 season, posted fourths in two of his most recent three starts, with his first NCWTS Keystone Light Pole tossed in for good measure at Nashville Superspeedway. To say that DeLoach is delighted would be understatement.
"I am thoroughly pleased with what I have seen in Timothy," he said." His work ethic, demeanor and personality make him a pleasure to have here on our team. He can work on the trucks and really understand all the mechanics. You don"t find that very often in a driver." Timothy is a wonderful person and a breath of fresh air." Crew chief Chad Kendrick echoes the owner's sentiments.
"I haven't worked with very many drivers but I have never seen one as hands-on as he is. He is here at the shop at seven every morning when the guys get here and he comes all the way from Virginia," said Kendrick." He has worked on his own equipment for so long, it's hard for him to let go and let us take care of it."
Peters, a native of Providence, N.C., honed his racing skills in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. He got his NASCAR national series break in 2005-06 competing in 33 races for Bobby Hamilton Racing. Peters moved to Nashville to work on Hamilton's Dodges between races, gaining experience inside the cockpit and out that he"s putting to good use at Red Horse Racing.
The 28-year-old Peters and Kendrick started the season with Premier Racing, a team on a tight budget. They joined DeLoach's team when Johnny Benson was released in June.
"Our equipment and the people have really made the difference for us. It's not just one thing or one person but a combination of everything that has made us better," said Peters." I have great equipment under me at the race track each and every week."
Peters likes working on his trucks but the difference is that now, it's not a necessity.
"Our team before consisted of me and (Chad) working on the trucks. Now neither of us is responsible for so many different things so we can both concentrate on our jobs," he said." I can focus on being a driver and getting better each week."
Newman Goes For the" Quad" At Bristol
Bristol Week is going to be a very busy time for Ryan Newman -- especially opening Wednesday. Newman will drive four completely different pieces of racing equipment for as many owners. That includes a return to Kevin Harvick Inc.'s #2 Pringles Chevy. That's the same chassis that carried Newman to his 2008 victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Newman will compete in the track's first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race that precedes the NCWTS O'Reilly 200 presented by Valvoline. He'll add starts in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events to complete a marathon weekend consisting of 1,100 laps.
It's believed no driver has won four races in a NASCAR national series weekend at the same track but one -- Steve Park -- who gave it a great shot when the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series visited New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the first time in 1996.
Park, recent NASCAR Camping World Series East winner, competed in five different races during the weekend, winning a Whelen Modified Tour race and finishing second in one of two Camping World Series East starts. Park finished fourth in the truck race.
The UNOH Perfect Storm 150 marks the first modified race since Bristol's banking was raised in 1969.
Loop Data: Stats Mirror Raybestos Rookie Standings -- So Far
The Raybestos Rookie of the Year battle is a tight one; and it"s about to get even tighter. The scoring system states that only the best 14 finishes by a Raybestos rookie candidate will count toward their final points total in the rookie standings. With the 14th race officially in the books, bad finishes from here on out will be tossed. In other words, rookies better make it count.
Currently, Tayler Malsam (#81 One Eighty Toyota) holds a mere four-point lead over Johnny Sauter (#13 Fun Sand/Rodney Atkins/Curb Records Chevy) in the Raybestos Rookie standings. Statistically, he has been the best rookie as well, though again by the slimmest of margins over Sauter.
Here's the tale of the tape between the two rookie front-runners:
Driver Rating: Malsam's 82.9 leads Sauter's 81.3
Average Running Position: Malsam"s 12.9 leads Sauter's 13.3
Fastest Laps Run: Malsam's 57 leads Sauter"s 46
Laps in the Top 15 percentage: Malsam's 68.2% leads Sauter's 65.6%
Sauter does lead one key statistical category: Laps Led. Sauter has led 45 laps, which is ninth-most in 2009. Malsam has led 12 laps this season.
James Buescher (#10 International MAXX FORCE Diesel Ford) sits third in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings, 15 points behind Malsam. Through the first 14 races, Buescher has a Driver Rating of 69.3, an Average Running Position of 17.1, two Fastest Laps Run and a Laps in the Top 15 percentage of 37.7%.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series gets to stay in the state of Tennessee. The trucks will head East on I-40 where Bristol Motor Speedway will host the series for the O'Reilly 200 presented by Valvoline on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
Ron Hornaday Jr. holds the most wins at the track with two (1997, 1998). Should he keep his winning streak alive in two weeks, the driver would make it a Tennessee sweep, having won races at Memphis and Nashville earlier in the season. Travis Kvapil is the only other series driver to win at all three Tennessee tracks.
(NASCAR PR)(8-10-2009)
The Streak Continues For Ron Hornaday Jr.
Well, he did it again. Ron Hornaday Jr. (#33 Longhorn Chevy) made it to Victory Lane for a fifth consecutive time this season. The win takes him to a new level and into the record books again. This time he joins very distinctive company.
With his win Saturday at Nashville Superspeedway, Hornaday joins Richard Petty and Bobby Allison as the third driver in NASCAR's three national racing series to win five races in a row. The last time this was done was in 1971 with both Petty and Allison.
"Honestly, this is just unbelievable," said Hornaday of the win." I know I have been saying that a lot lately, but it is. Five in a row. Wow! This is pretty cool. I have to thank all of these guys behind this truck. I could not have achieved any of this without them; they are a hard-working bunch of guys and they have earned every one of these wins."
His win marked his 45th in the series yet his first in five starts at Nashville. He said he wanted that Sam Bass-designed Gibson guitar and he got it.
"I'm so proud that I finally got a Sam Bass guitar," he said." I've wanted one for so many years and to finally achieve that, it's pretty cool."
In 14 races, Hornaday has collected six wins, matching the six he had for all of last season. His career high is seven wins in a single season which came in 1997. Greg Biffle holds the record for most wins in a season with nine (1999). Looking at Hornaday's record at the tracks ahead, chances are good he'll match or eclipse Biffle's record. Hornaday has wins on six of the 11 tracks.
Points Battle Different Picture This Year With 11 Races To Go
With 14 races down and 11 to go in the 2009 season, Ron Hornaday Jr.'s impressive winning streak has him perched at the top of the standings with a 216-point cushion over Matt Crafton (#88 Menards Chevy).
Hornaday's lead of 216 is the largest lead after 14 races in a season. He eclipses a 165-point lead Jack Sprague held over Greg Biffle in 1999. Sprague went on to win the title by eight points over Biffle, the series' third-closest championship points difference.
The second-largest difference at this point in a season was 158 points between Dennis Setzer (#8 Malcolmson Construction Chevy) and Ted Musgrave in 2005. Musgrave went on to pull past Setzer for the championship. In the end, only 55 points separated Musgrave and Setzer.
So while it looks as though the battle for the title may not be as close as seasons past, where it's gone down literally to the last lap at Homestead-Miami Speedway, anything can happen between now and then to stand between Hornaday and a record fourth series championship.
Example -- look back at 1999, when Biffle erased Sprague's mid-season advantage and actually built a 125-point advantage before late-season troubles took away the cushion. The pair traded the lead three times over the final three races before Sprague won his third title.
So yes, Hornaday's points lead looks safe right now but, as the saying goes, it ain't over til its over and the competitors behind him are going to do all they can to take advantage of any mishaps that befall Hornaday.
Crafton moved up to the second position following the race at Nashville, putting Mike Skinner (#5 PC Miler Navigator Toyota) back to third. Only 32 points, however, separates Crafton and the series' 1995 champion. Both are looking to get back to Victory Lane and for better luck in the weeks ahead to help diminish the points deficit.
Loop Data: Stats More Than Support Ron Hornaday Jr.'s Dominance
Clearly, winning five consecutive races says all that needs to be said about Ron Hornaday Jr.'s dominance.
But a deeper look into the statistics shows just how strong he actually ran.
In two of those wins, Hornaday was statistically perfect. At Milwaukee and Memphis (his first two wins of the streak), Hornaday scored a perfect Driver Rating of 150.0. At Milwaukee, his Average Running Position was 1.5. At Memphis, it was 1.2 -- his best of the five wins. In that race, he led 175 of the 201 laps for a percentage of 87.1% -- also his best of the five victories.
Last Sunday's Nashville race was near-perfect, statistically speaking. He was just two-tenths off a perfect Driver Rating scoring a 149.8. In the event, he had an Average Running Position of 1.3 led 74.7% of the laps (115 of 154).
Over the five-race winning streak, here are Hornaday's absurd numbers: a Driver Rating of 144.8, an Average Running Position of 1.9, 225 Fastest Laps Run, 566 Laps Led and a Laps in the Top 15 percentage of 100% -- he ran all 905 laps among the top 15.
Comparing those numbers to his competitors over that span highlights his dominance even more. Here is the tale of the tape for Hornaday versus the second-best driver in a few key statistical categories over the five-race span:
Driver Rating: Hornaday's 144.8 leads Mike Skinner's 105.0 by 39.8.
Average Running Position: Hornaday's 1.9 leads Todd Bodine's 6.3 by 4.4 positions.
Fastest Laps Run: Hornaday's 225 leads Skinner's 89 by 136.
Laps Led: Hornaday's 566 leads Bodine's 83 by 483.
Rookie Battle
Tayler Malsam (#81 OneEighty Toyota) continues his hold on the lead for the Raybestos Rookie of the Year honors. In 14 races so far this season, Malsam has collected seven top-10 finishes. His best finish was sixth at Michigan in June.
His on-track performance has him sitting seventh in the standings.
Malsam's lead, however, is minimal over the" not-really-a-rookie" rookie Johnny Sauter (#13 Fun Sand/Rodney Atkins/Curb Records Chevy). With four points separating the two, the battle keeps close.
While Malsam and Sauter are neck and neck, Texas native James Buescher (#10 International Maxx Force Diesel Ford) is keeping himself in the mix. Buescher sits only 11 points behind Sauter.

Chevy swipes the top spot from Toyota following Ron Hornaday Jr.'s win at Nashville Superspeedway over the weekend. While the lead is by only one point, it's a different picture for the manufacturer this season versus last season. After 14 races, Toyota held a seven-point lead over Chevy and never looked back in claiming the 2008 title.
