  • Auto Club Track Notes & History:
    Groundbreaking for California Speedway, as Auto Club Speedway was originally known, took place in November 1995.
    The first race at Auto Club Speedway was a NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West race won by Ken Schrader on June 21, 1997.
    The first NASCAR Sprint Cup race was held on June 22, 1997 and won by Jeff Gordon.
    September 2004 was the first night race at Auto Club Speedway and that also was the first year both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Nationwide Series ran two races in a season there.

  • How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

TIRE NOTES & FACTS

  • Tire: Goodyear Eagle Speedway Radials:

    Set limits: Sprint Cup: 5 sets for practice and qualifying and 12 sets for the race

    Tire Codes: Left-side -- D-4650; Right-side -- D-4658

    Tire Circumference: Left-side -- 87.56 in. (2,224 mm); Right-side -- 88.39 in. (2,245 mm)

    Minimum Recommended Inflation:
    Left Front -- 19 psi; Left Rear -- 19 psi;
    Right Front -- 45 psi; Right Rear -- 42 psi

    Notes: While teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series will run the same left-side tire code at Fontana this week, they will run their own right-side codes . . . in Sprint Cup, teams previously ran this left-side tire code (D-4650) at Indianapolis and Darlington last year, but this is the first time they have run this right-side code (D-4658) . . . compared to what was run at Fontana last season, this left-side features a slight construction change . . . the change for this right-side is that it is a multi-zone tread tire, which features two distinct tread compounds on the same tire -- one for endurance and heat resistance on the inboard two inches of the tread and one for traction on the outboard 10 inches . . . this right-side code features the same compound run at Fontana '15 on the inboard, with a different compound for more grip on the outboard . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run liners in all four tire positions at Fontana . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

    Goodyear Blimp: Goodyear's "Spirit of Innovation," based out of Carson, Calif., will be in the air over Auto Club Speedway this weekend . . . the ship will be a part of Fox's television coverage of the Xfinity race on Saturday and Sprint Cup race on Sunday.
