Don't expect to see Stewart-Haas drivers in F1 car: Now that her car owner has a Formula One team, could Danica Patrick ever race in the worldwide racing series? Gene Haas doesn't think so. Nothing against Patrick, he just doesn't think any of his NASCAR drivers could jump in a car for Haas Formula, a new F1 team that will begin fielding two cars in 2015 or 2016, and succeed. Haas actually has three drivers with IndyCar experience in his NASCAR stable. Tony Stewart was the 1997 IndyCar championship, Patrick spent seven years on the circuit and Kurt Busch is competing in the Indianapolis 500 this year after completing rookie orientation last year. But Haas isn't looking from within for a future F1 driver. "I'd certainly never expect any of our current lineup of drivers to want to be able to do that," Haas said during a news conference Monday. "It would be really impossible to accomplish that and survive. ... Just the thought of jumping into a Formula One car from a Cup car would be very, very difficult."(Sporting News)(4-16-2014)

At 35, Busch said it won't be him racing a Haas Formula One car. "My time has passed to be a competitive driver in F1," Busch said. "But a test session? I'd jump on that every time. UPDATE: NASCAR team owner Gene Haas says he plans to field an American-based Formula One racing series team within the next two years. The team will be called Haas Formula, he said Monday at a news conference. Haas says he should know within the next four weeks if the team will begin racing in 2015 or wait until 2016. He says part of that depends on how long it takes for Haas Formula to find an engine supplier. Haas Formula would become the first American-based Formula One team in more than three decades to join the racing series. Although there's plenty of skepticism over his decision, Haas says, "I wouldn't be doing it if I thought I was going to fail. UPDATE2: The motivation for Gene Haas is two-fold. Primarily, Haas, who owns one the largest CNC tool manufacturing operations, wants to market his products globally and F1 will allow him to "enhance his branding" on a greater scale than NASCAR, which is limited to North America. "The ultimate goal is to take the image of Haas Automation and turn it into a brand that is desired and high-quality and known throughout the world," Haas said. "The ultimate goal would be to double our sales for Haas Automation. I think it's going to be positive. As an indicator, I'm using the relationship with NASCAR that we have here including the brands we have in the United States. We have a very good market share, good market penetration and it's as simple as to replicate that overseas."
Secondly, despite short-lived effort of the USF1 team, Haas is convinced that an American-based team can compete against the established F1 juggernauts of Europe. Haas feels that with the current F1 rules packages, the timing is right for an aspiring team to enter the series and dispel the notion that "Americans can't do it".
"I'm here to prove that we can do it, and we can do it with a budget and we can be efficient at it and we can win at it," Haas said. "That's what I'm going to try. I'm not saying that I'm better than anybody else. I just have a different way of doing it, and people that I work with think differently. That, I guess, is going to be the secret to our success in this business. We're going to spend our money wisely. We're going to do it with an American flair for design and efficiencies, and that's how we're going to control our costs. I don't -- we're not going to be a European-led team. We're going to be an American-led team and we'll do it the way we think is the most efficient. Yes, this is an ambitious undertaking for Haas. He wasn't joking when asked about his budget that "it's going to be billions and billions" to be operational. And he has just over a month to inform the FIA as to whether Haas Formula intends to race in 2015 or 2016. Certainly, Haas' timetable will depend on the support of his technical partners. Similar to his introduction to NASCAR where he relied on Hendrick Motorsports to get up to speed, Haas will rely on the relationship of his potential F1 partners as well.
Formula Haas' home base will be in Kannapolis, N.C. adjacent to the existing Stewart-Haas Racing shop. The company is currently adding 150,000 sq. ft. With Haas Automation satellites in Brussels and Shanghai, there is already a global base, but Haas expects to have a secondary shop in either Germany or Italy likely dependent on whether he partners with Mercedes or Ferrari. Haas will likely use Dallara for his chassis, but his eventual goal is to develop the components to compete for the Constructors championship.
As for prospective drivers, in the beginning Haas would like to use racers that are already familiar with the current engine rules package then eventually phase in American talent. Formula Haas team principal Guenther Steiner would prefer not entertainment drivers searching for buy rides but rely on racers with raw talent. For now, Haas intends on maintaining a clean car free of sponsorship outside of the Haas brand. He believes that any additional support would "dilute" his marketing strategy. However, a five-year plan is in place to "make this a profitable enterprise" and that will involve additional sponsors in order "to make money and compete".(Motorsport)(4-15-2014)

Haas's US team to be given green light into F1 by next year UPDATE: Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that a new team run by an American businessman is on track to join Formula One next year. It will become the sport's 12th team and the first from America since the 1980s. Formula One has not had an American driver since 2007. The team is run by Gene Haas, the joint owner of the championship-winning Stewart-Haas Racing team [#4, #10, #14, #41], which competes in America's NASCAR stock car series. "I think Haas will be accepted," said Ecclestone, the sport's chief executive. "They have got the money but it's a question of whether they are going to spend it." In addition to his stake in the NASCAR team, Haas is also the founder of leading American engineering firm Haas Automation, which has annual revenues of around $1bn (£600m). UPDATE: Formula One commercial chief Bernie Ecclestone says a U.S. backed team headed by Gene Haas is among two new teams the sport is likely to admit next season. Speaking on Sunday ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, Ecclestone said he had held discussions with the sport's governing body, the FIA, and there was agreement about expanding the grid next season. "They will be accepted, and we've also accepted another team as well, although whether they'll make it or not is another story," Ecclestone said when asked about a possible Haas entry. I've spoken to (FIA President) Jean Todt and we agreed yesterday." Teams complete tires test at Sonoma Five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams completed a rain-dampened two-day Goodyear tire test at Sonoma Raceway on Wednesday. Intermittent rain fell at the raceway both Tuesday and Wednesday, but #9-Marcos Ambrose, #18-Kyle Busch, #24-Jeff Gordon, #14-Tony Stewart and #55-Brian Vickers were able to log approximately nine hours of track time over the two days. "Goodyear had a pretty stout tire here last year, and they want to improve on it if they can. They came here with some different compounds to try, and a good mix of teams and drivers to get feedback," said Ambrose, who started from the pole in Sonoma in 2012. "We also get a chance to set up the car up with the new technical regulations, which is helpful for the team. Ninety-five percent of the time was getting tires dialed in for Goodyear, and then the rest of the time was for us to see what we'll need when we come back." The two-day test marked the first Goodyear Sprint Cup Series tire test of the year, and is currently the only scheduled road-course test. Formula One expected to make decision on Haas UPDATE: The FIA is due to make a decision on Friday regarding whether it will grant a 2015 Formula One entry to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team owner Gene Haas -- or to the Romanian project fronted by Colin Kolles. The FIA on Dec. 12 announced a "call for expression of interest," and noted that it would make its decision on Feb. 28. However, when the decision will be announced to the public remains to be seen. Haas, who co-owns Stewart-Haas Racing with Tony Stewart, is tied to Ferrari, and if granted an entry would be able to take advantage of the fact that the FIA is relaxing the rules on technology sharing between teams next season. Haas would be able to buy almost everything he needs for an F1 program from Maranello. However, he has to own the intellectual property of his chassis and bodywork. The Romanian project is believed to involve state-funded backing and is in theory closer to being realized than its American rival. Lotus LMP1/LMP2 sports-car constructor Kolles, who ran the now-defunct HRT F1 team from his base near Munich, could provide existing race team and manufacturing facilities. The two candidates paid the FIA a $130,000 fee and went through a vetting process which culminated in a meeting with key FIA figures on Tuesday of this week.(Autoweek)(2-28-2014)
UPDATE: The FIA has delayed its decision on a future Formula One team entry, which was due [Friday]. The governing body has written to the candidates, but apparently did not give a reason for the delay, nor an alternative deadline. However, it's worth speculating that FIA president Jean Todt and F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone might have different ideas about which team should get the nod. It's believed that only one slot is up for grabs, although there is no reason why the field could not be extended to 26 cars, and that may be one of the factors behind the delay. There's also the question of whether all the existing teams will survive over the next couple of years. It seems that Gene Haas is aiming for a 2016 start. What happened to Tony Stewart's car in Daytona 500? After a six-hour and 22-minute rain delay subdued the momentum of the Daytona 500, a fuel pressure issue subdued #14-Tony Stewart's run in the season-opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway. He finished 35th. The problem reared its head on lap 94 when Stewart radioed to crew chief Chad Johnston that his fuel gauge was "jumping all around" and that his engine "laid down" on exit of the track's corners. Stewart tried to wait the problem out until a caution appeared, but the problem worsened and Stewart was forced to pit under green on lap 101 of the 200-lap race. Johnston and Co. opened the trunk where the fuel cell and associated electronics are located. Stewart shut off his racecar, switched batteries and then restarted his #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet SS. With no indications of a problem, Stewart headed back onto the racetrack where on lap 105 he said, "So far, so good." A moment later, however, Stewart said he spoke too soon. The problem remained. Stewart returned to pit road on lap 117 and didn't return to the track until lap 128. The problem persisted and, finally, Stewart was forced to bring his car to the garage with 70 laps remaining. There, the team replaced the fuel cell and all its electronic pieces. It was an intensive effort that took time, with Stewart pulling out of the garage on lap 146. While many laps down, the problem was solved. Stewart logged laps and took advantage of the attrition of others, rising from 42nd when he made his first unscheduled pit stop to finishing 35th when the checkered flag waved.(TSC/SHR)(2-24-2014)
Stewart: Richard Petty should race Danica UPDATE 'The King' accepts: During the first of two PRN Fast Talk Shows at Outback Steakhouse in Daytona with Doug Rice and Mark Garrow, Tony Stewart made it very clear how he feels about the negative remarks Richard Petty made recently about Danica Patrick. "I told her she should challenge Richard to a heads up race," said Stewart. "I think that would pretty much settle it once and for all, maybe get him to shut up a little bit too. He drove in an era when he had cars that were superior to what everybody else was running a lot. I think he forgets that, that NASCAR has changed a lot since he was a driver and how hard it really is now." Stewart added, "I will supply the cars, I don't care. If he wants to race her I'll make sure they have exactly the same set-up in the car and give him a chance. He can drive one of my 14 cars I don't care." It was then suggested if Danica ever won a race that she should ask Petty to autograph the checkered flag. Stewart, however, had another suggestion. "If I were her I'd take it over and cram it up his (bleep)...If it were me, that's just me." UPDATE: The Richard Petty-Danica Patrick-Tony Stewart saga just won't stop. Goaded by "Fox & Friends" hosts on Friday morning, Petty accepted Stewart's offer to set up a head-to-head race between Patrick and the NASCAR Hall of Famer. "I'm 76 years old, OK?" Petty said, grinning, during a live spot from Daytona International Speedway. "It's been 25 years since I've been in a race car. But I'll take that challenge." When pressed, he reaffirmed, "Oh, yeah. Stewart OK after slamming wall in wreck: After waiting nearly seven months to get back in his #14 Mobil 1/Bass Pro Shops Chevy and race, Tony Stewart didn't waste any time getting racy in the Sprint Unlimited Saturday night at Daytona. Stewart, who broke his right leg in a sprint car crash on Aug. 5, 2013, waited only five laps before ducking to the inside lane to see how his car would react in the draft. For the next 30 laps, Stewart ebbed and flowed with the draft, dropping to as low as 17th before running as high as third. But on lap 35, a multicar crash consumed Stewart and six other drivers, three of whom were his Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) teammates - #4-Kevin Harvick, #41-Kurt Busch and #10-Danica Patrick. Only Harvick was able to continue in the race. For Stewart, Busch and Patrick, their race was over, with each one of their racecars a crumpled mess. All were evaluated and released from the infield care center.
"From the replay, I don't know whether the #20 (Matt Kenseth) came down or the #22 (Joey Logano) got into him. You've just got to protect your spot," Stewart said after walking out of the infield care center. "I've always said I'm not a big fan of blocking, but unfortunately it's what you have to do here. It seemed like tonight it was a little easier to get stalled out, so if you got track position, you had to protect it. We just needed a couple more inches here and there and we would've gotten out of that. We hate to have that happen." Moments after the accident, many were uneasy for fear the impact may have reinjured Stewart's leg.
"I was a little nervous about it because I knew we were going to hit nose-first, but it doesn't feel bad at all," Stewart said. "It doesn't have any pain. We'll see when the adrenalin wears off here in about an hour, but so far it feels good."(SHR)(2-16-2014)
Engine Issues for three drivers, will go to the rear of Daytona 500: #10-Danica Patrick, who won the pole for the Daytona 500 last year, was one of three drivers to have their Hendrick Motorsports engines suffer catastrophic failures in practice Saturday. #52-Bobby Labonte, driving a second car for HScott Motorsports, was the first using a leased HMS engine to experience trouble in the first practice session of the day. In the second session, the #14 Chevy of Tony Stewart -- Patrick's teammate at Stewart-Haas Racing -- belched smoke, signaling a failure. Patrick's #10 Chevrolet did much the same 10 minutes later. Both Stewart and Patrick said they had no warning. "It's just a motor. If it was getting ready for the race you would be a little more concerned," Stewart said. "It's just for qualifying. They pay the big check a week from tomorrow, not tomorrow."
Each team will be forced to start from the rear of the field for the Daytona 500. All three cars will also begin their respective Thursday qualifying races from the rear. None of Hendrick Motorsports' drivers suffered such problems. HMS director of track support Scott Maxim surmised problems were in the "bottom" of the engine but would not know for certain until each was dismantled. HMS general manager Doug Duchardt foresaw no problems for the rest of the race weekend, saying the team had "pushed the limit and found the limit."(ESPN)(2-15-2014)
Stewart says his leg feels ok after first practice: #14-Tony Stewart, met with members of the media at Daytona International Speedway following the first practice session for Saturday's Sprint Unlimited. Stewart discussed how he felt in the car as he climbed behind the wheel for the first time following his accident last season, the transcript in part:
Q) HOW DID IT FEEL?
Stewart: "It felt good. The great thing is there is zero percentage of pain in the car. That was nice. We will see what it feels like at 9 o'clock tonight, but so far so good. That is better than I was hoping for, honestly. I thought we would have some kind of ache, pain of some kind that would bother us. It was like putting on an old pair of shoes again."
Q) IS IT A RELIEF OR ARE YOU JUST OVERJOYED?
Stewart: "Well a little of both. I think once we got the relief of knowing we weren't hurting anywhere then it was just joy of being back out there again. It didn't feel like I had been gone seven months when we started running. It was today though, every five minutes I was looking at the clock from 3 o'clock on going 'is it 4:30 yet' because I wanted to get dressed at 4:30 and come in. That is a long time to be staring at the clock for an hour and a half. That is small compared to the seven months."
Q) DID YOU HAVE ANY THERAPY TODAY OR ANY SPECIAL STRETCHES OR ANYTHING? OR IS IT JUST LIKE A NORMAL PRACTICE DAY?
Stewart: "Knowing you are my back-up guy (referring to an inside joke with reporter Bob Pockrass) I didn't do anything extra. I felt like my back-up guy is on par and ready to go. No, I didn't do anything today."
Q) HOW ABOUT GETTING IN AND OUT OF THE CAR?
Stewart: "Piece of cake. I didn't fall. I think that was what everybody was waiting for. If there was ever a time to not screw up it is getting in the car this time. About 400 cameras there so I didn't want to be the guy that fell out of the car and got on the cover of the paper for that."
Stewart Donates Custom Scooter to Darrell Gwynn Foundation: The custom scooter three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion #14-Tony Stewart used to move around following an Aug. 5 sprint car crash that broke his right leg has been donated to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. Stewart personally donated the scooter, complete with a special paint scheme that mimics the #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet SS he drives in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. The Foundation, in turn, will auction the scooter at the upcoming Barrett-Jackson event April 11-13 in Palm Beach, FL. Stewart signed the scooter, as well as a 16x20 picture of him on the scooter. But in addition to the scooter, Stewart has created an overall package that will accompany the scooter's winning bid. It includes a race-worn Bass Pro Shops firesuit signed by Stewart and a trip for two people to be his guests at the July 3-5 Coke Zero 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Daytona International Speedway. Round-trip airfare, a three-night hotel stay and garage passes will all be covered by Stewart, and two reserved seats will be available on the #14 team's pit box for the winners to watch the Coke Zero 400. Stewart will not have a driver on standby at Daytona: #14-Tony Stewart will not have a driver on standby this weekend at Daytona International Speedway as he plans to get back in a racecar for the first time since breaking two bones in his right leg in August. Stewart, whose leg was punctured by a front-end piece of the sprint car he crashed when trying to avoid another vehicle in an Aug. 5 race at Southern Iowa Speedway, has estimated that his leg will be 65% healed when practice starts Friday at Daytona International Speedway. "I think they said their final selection would be in March, something like that," Haas said during Charlotte Motor Speedway's annual media tour. "I think we have a shot. SHR pit crews face off in preseason competition: As the offseason comes to a close and the Daytona 500 rapidly approaches, teams are doing all they can to show up to the first race of the season at their best. Drivers have been testing behind the wheel, mechanics turning wrenches in the shops, engineers working through data and computer programs to determine the ideal set-up. Each team is looking to bring their 'A-game' to Daytona to show off in a big way. For the pit crews, however, preparation is typically limited to workout routines and practice stops out behind the shop. While this is great for repetition and practice, the sense of competition is not always there. At Stewart-Haas Racing, however, the organization found a fun way to get their over-the-wall guys ready for Daytona by competing against one another. On Friday [Feb 7th], SHR held an internal "Pit Crew Throwdown" to see which team was the fastest crew in the bunch. The competition was stiff between the four teams. Haas is pushing ahead with his plans to enter F1 in 2015: Despite Bernie Ecclestone's recent warning, Gene Haas is pushing ahead with his plans to enter F1 in 2015. After Haas, a NASCAR team co-owner, responded to the FIA's invitation to fill the vacant team slot, Ecclestone said publicly he doubts the Californian is prepared to spend what it takes to compete in F1. "He doesn't think we will get the license," Haas responded, "so my chances probably aren't that great of a shot." Nevertheless, Italy's specialist Autosprint reports that Haas is pushing ahead. Correspondent Alberto Antonini said Haas is preparing to meet the FIA's next application deadline of Feb. 10, including demonstrating its ability and willingness to compete with an adequate budget. Autosprint also said Haas, whose project involves the former F1 personality Gunther Steiner, is pushing ahead with plans to field a Dallara chassis in 2015, mated to Ferrari's V6 and energy-recovery 'power unit.' Haas interested in Formula 1 team UPDATES: NASCAR Sprint Cup car owner Gene Haas has applied to own a Formula 1 team, Stewart-Haas Racing confirmed Thursday. A report on the German website auto motor und sport reported that Haas is one of three new applicants to field a Formula 1 team as soon as 2015. "We have responded to the FIA's 'call for expression of interest' regarding a Formula One entry on behalf of Haas Racing Development,'' co-owner Gene Haas said in a statement. "We respect the FIA's evaluation process and will share more details in the coming weeks." Haas is founder of Haas Automation, the largest CNC machine tool builder in the western world. The FIA issued its "call for expression of interest'' in November. It's a new selection process to identify a new team to compete in Formula 1 at the start of the 2015 or '16 season. Applicants had to file paperwork and submit an administrative fee of $5,000. Responses were due Jan. 3. The German website reported that Haas' plans are to design a car in-house but to have it initially designed by Dallara. Ferrari would be the engine partner. UPDATE: Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone does not think multi-millionaire NASCAR team owner Gene Haas can afford to enter Formula One in 2015. A published report by the Sporting News on Jan. 16 estimated that Haas's net worth was $740 million in 2011. The business partner in NASCAR's Stewart-Haas racing operation announced recently that he has responded to the FIA's 'call for expressions of interest' in filling the vacant slot in pit lane. In addition to his NASCAR operation, Haas heads one of the best wind tunnels in the world, and according to the German media outlet Auto Motor und Sport, he would start in F1 with a healthy three-digit million budget. But F1 chief executive Ecclestone told Racer he thinks it "most unlikely" Haas will enter F1, because of the sport's huge costs. "They (Haas) have been talking about it for three years," F1 business journalist Caroline Reid quoted Ecclestone as saying. UPDATE: He was speaking at NASCAR's annual Sprint Cup media tour, but most of the questions directed toward Gene Haas involved Formula One. On Monday, Haas repeated his desire to form America's first F1 entrant since Penske Racing competed in the world's premier form of motorsports from a base in England from 1974 to 1978. He is determined to field a start-up team out of the Charlotte area, most likely from a new facility that would be built on land he owns near Kannapolis, N.C. "We've looked at buying a team, but there are problems associated with that," Haas told ESPN.com. "First of all, it's tremendously expensive, with a lot of existing personnel you're responsible for. Some of them have a lot of debt you would have to pay off. So they all have their issues. "Starting our own team has its problems too, but the good thing is that it would be an American team," he added. "That really was the No. 1 fundamental priority -- to have an American team competing in a European series." Haas acknowledged that one problem he needs to overcome is the stigma left by USF1, an attempt at starting an American F1 team in 2009 that was granted entry to the 2010 F1 season but never came close to getting off the ground. NASCAR star Tony Stewart, the co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, voiced his support for his partner's efforts to break into F1 -- though he quickly clarified that he is not part of the proposed team. Haas said the next deadline for the application process is Feb. 10, and he expects to learn by the end of March whether he will be able to move ahead with his plans for an American Formula One team. UPDATE: Tony Stewart says his broken right leg will only be 65% healed by the time he's cleared to drive for Daytona Speedweeks, but the three-time NASCAR champion still believes he'll be fine once he gets back in the car. Stewart has a titanium rod in his leg, which will provide it enough strength to press the pedals -- which he said he's done "a million times already" in the race shop. But Stewart still won't be cleared to drive until Feb. 14, the day before NASCAR's season-opening Sprint Unlimited exhibition race. Because Stewart's leg isn't fully healed, the driver acknowledged there's a risk he could aggravate the injury to his leg, which he badly broke in an Aug. 5 sprint car crash in Iowa. But he cited injuries to Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. last season as proof healthy drivers can break bones, too. "This is an injury that's not healed 100% -- there's no bones about it," Stewart said before realizing he made a pun and chuckling. THE MODERATOR: Talk a little bit about what it feels like to be back and be here at Daytona.
TONY STEWART: It would be nice if it was dry right now. But it's Daytona and it's February, and you get this when we come down sometimes. But it's nice to be back at the track, would definitely like to be in a car this week, but we're still on schedule to be clear the day before the Shootout, so we'll be down here for two days hanging out and watching our teams run.
Q. How is your health compared to how you feel? What are the doctors saying?
STEWART: Not bad. The weather -- I'm a pretty good barometer right now. Seems like if the rain comes or snow or cold comes, I know it right before it changes. But I feel pretty good. I still have a little ways to go, but we've got four weeks to get ready the rest of the way. Even when we get here in February, it's not going to be 100 percent. Physically I'm not going to feel 100 percent, but I'll be able to do my job 100 percent, so that's the main thing. I don't mind it taking a little longer for the physical side to heal, as long as I can drive a race car when I need to when I get back.
Q. Can you talk about how challenging it's been for you both from a mental and a physical standpoint in getting back?
STEWART: Yeah, I guess the hardest part is just not knowing where I'm supposed to be. I mean, I've never had an injury like this so I don't have anything to compare it to. I kind of base everything on a week-to-week deal, and on Sunday I kind of evaluate where I was the Sunday before and go from there. It's been kind of a challenge, I guess, from that standpoint. The physical side of it is an obvious deal. It's getting everything healed back up and going through rehab and doing everything we're supposed to do. But just not knowing exactly what I'm supposed to feel like, if something hurts why is it hurting. I've not had those experiences before. The therapist gets his phone -- I think he sets it on his nightstand at night because I call him at night and ask him a lot of questions. But having those guys around, it kind of takes the psychological side and kind of puts a lot of that at ease.
Q. When you mentioned that you'll be cleared the day before the Sprint Unlimited and that you might not feel 100 percent but will be able to give 100 percent, can you kind of -- do you have any idea how much your most recent surgery, kind of, if not for that do you think you would be closer to feeling as good as well as being able to perform at the start of the season?
STEWART: Honestly, that second -- or the third surgery wasn't really much of a setback in all reality. We were actually ahead of schedule with the therapy when we had that surgery, so it basically just pushed it back to where we were right back on schedule again, and now it just feels like we're back ahead of schedule again. Twice we've been able to kind of push ahead of schedule it seems like, so pretty confident from that standpoint that that wasn't a setback at all. It's still a question mark of what's it actually going to feel like when we get in the race car and try to drive wide open for lap after lap.
Q. Is this pretty much the schedule that you hoped for when this all happened?
STEWART: Yeah, we're actually just a tick ahead of schedule still. It's the second time since the injury happened that the therapist has said we're ahead.(Team Chevy)(1-10-2014)
Zipadelli offered to return at Stewart's crew chief: #14-Tony Stewart and Greg Zipadelli won 33 races and two NASCAR championships together over a successful decade together. They split after the 2008 season when Stewart left to become co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing. He's entering this season with his third crew chief in six years, evidence he's struggled to find the same chemistry he had with Zipadelli all those years. So Zipadelli told The Associated Press he offered last year to return to the pit box with Stewart - an idea the driver did not entertain. Zipadelli is currently the vice president of competition at SHR. He manages all four of SHR's Sprint Cup teams in that role, and says Stewart didn't want him to move. Stewart discusses progress with leg injury: #14-Tony Stewart, still recovering from the last of three surgeries to repair his leg, will be in the Expo Hall at Memorial Coliseum even though he can't drive his black #2 Munchkin midget in the 16th Rumble in Fort Wayne, IN. Event organizer Tony Barhorst has declared the weekend "A Salute to Tony Stewart" in honor of Stewart's devotion to short-track racing, and he'll sign autographs for a couple of hours today and Saturday. In between, he'll watch his pal Lou Cicconi, the 2013 International Supermodified Association champion, wheel the Munchkin around, and wish it could be him. "You know, when I first got hurt, I was hurt bad enough that it didn't really feel like that I had that sense that I was missing it," Stewart says. "But now that I'm closer to being healed, and ready to go, the more anxious I am to be in the car. But, I've got a good friend of mine that's going to drive the car, and you know, to me, I still get to go. I still get to compete as a car owner. So I'm still looking forward to it." And come February, to getting back in the car again. The last surgery was a couple of months ago, and the timetable has him back in the car in time for the Daytona 500. And so far the timetable looks good. "It feels really good, actually," Stewart says. "I'd say the last three weeks in particular in therapy we're really making big gains. Kahne and Stewart to honor Leffler at Chili Bowl: Kasey Kahne and Tony Stewart are entering next month's Chili Bowl Nationals in honor of late racer Jason Leffler. Kahne will drive a car entered in combination with Stewart, Leffler's girlfriend, Julianna Patterson, and former father-in-law, Bob East., in the Jan. 14-18 race at the Tulsa Expo Center in Oklahoma. Plans had been for Leffler and Patterson to co-own the car, and Leffler and East to build it together before Leffler's death in a June sprint car crash. East continued the project following the accident, and Patterson turned to Stewart for help after the three-time NASCAR champion broke his leg in his own sprint car accident last season. "She told me, 'I'm going to be a car owner at the Chili Bowl' and I said, 'OK?' kind of quizzically, and it's just gone on from there," Stewart told The Associated Press. "Bob is building the car. The owner was going to be Jason and Julianna, and I really wanted to be involved." So did Kahne, who was close friends with the 37-year-old Leffler, a journeyman NASCAR driver who loved racing so much he entered everything he could. The night he was killed in a sprint car race in New Jersey, the winner was guaranteed just $7,000. Kahne had to first convince his NASCAR team owner, Rick Hendrick, to sign off on his participation in the Chili Bowl. Hendrick hasn't forbidden Kahne from any extracurricular racing, but hasn't exactly rubber-stamped Kahne's opportunities, either. Kahne felt racing in honor of Leffler at the Chili Bowl, with the promise of raffling off the car after for the Charlie Dean Leffler Discretionary Trust to benefit Leffler's son, would get him the permission from Hendrick. The Chili Bowl is one of the most prestigious midget events of the year and has a star-studded lineup. Stewart to be on the cover of NASCAR '14 UPDATE: Ever since Tony Stewart - known as "Smoke" -- badly broke his leg in an August sprint car crash, his fans have flooded social media with the #SmokeWillRise hashtag. It turns out their appetite for his return goes beyond just tweeting. NASCAR will announce today that Stewart won a competition fueled by social media to appear on the cover of next year's NASCAR '14 video game, dominating the competition in each round of its "Drive For The Cover" contest. Stewart, who is expected to return in time for the season-opening Daytona 500 in February, beat Jeff Gordon in the final round with 69% of the vote. He had the highest vote total in all five rounds of the bracket-style competition and never had less than 64% in any matchup. That Stewart won wasn't a huge surprise - Dale Earnhardt Jr. wasn't eligible for the contest after appearing on last year's cover - but that he prevailed by such a large margin was notable. UPDATE: Tony Stewart fans have spoken, and they've made it clear that they cannot wait to see the driver of the #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevy back on the track, even if it is on the cover of a video game. NASCAR announced today that fans worldwide have cast more than 700,000 votes in the "Drive for the Cover" campaign, ultimately selecting three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Stewart to appear on the cover of NASCAR '14. Stewart has appeared on the cover of the officially licensed NASCAR game twice before, but this is the first time he was selected by fans. It was clear early on that Stewart was going to be hard to defeat. During the five-week contest, conducted entirely on Facebook, Stewart dominated each round of the competition. Stewart's closest opposition came in the final round against another fan favorite, four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon. Stewart still focusing on recovery, return to racing: There are nights when Tony Stewart swears the pain in his right leg feels as if someone is hammering in a 100 carpenter nails. When this happens, sleeping isn't an option, although doctors have assured him the sensation he's feeling are the nerves working overtime internally to heal the shattered leg -- the tibia and fibula bones he cracked in a sprint car accident on Aug. 5 in Iowa which have required three surgeries since. It takes great effort for Stewart to simply get comfortable. The guy who tussled with Joey Logano on pit road this March and heaved a helmet at Matt Kenseth's car last season struggled to just cautiously extend his leg outward.
As far as Stewart's concerned, the best thing about Homestead being the last race is that he's planning to be driving his #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 in the next race, the season-opening Daytona 500. on Feb. 23. "They [doctors] say we're on schedule and they haven't flinched from it, even after the third surgery," Stewart explained. "That one was a three-week setback, but we were a little ahead at that time so it just kind of put us back to being on time. Right now, there's no drama. Barring any new infection or something stupid we have to go in and fix... everything should be fine. To me, it's more about getting healthy again. If we get healthy the rest will come."
Stewart said there is improvement even he can't always see it. It's only in the last few weeks that he is walking on his own, depending less and less on the cane. You can imagine, that for a guy who makes a living on speed, it just doesn't feel fast enough.
Despite the physical discomfort and daily inconveniences of the last four months, Stewart has remained determined to run his race team, which will expand to four cars in 2014 adding drivers Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick to go with Stewart and Patrick.(NASCAR.com)(11-30-2013)

UPDATE: Phoenix Racing announced that Steve Addington will serve as competition director for the team and crew chief of the #51 Chevy for the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. The move brings experienced leadership to the team that will compete fulltime in 2014 under owner Harry Scott, Jr. "In my opinion Steve is the perfect guy for the job," said Scott. "He is part of the Chevrolet family, the Hendrick family and I feel fortunate that he is now part of our family. I also want to thank Jimmy Elledge for stepping in at a critical time this season and serving as the interim crew chief for the past six races. We look forward to hopefully working with Jimmy again down the road."
"I am thrilled to be part of the Phoenix Racing team and working with Harry," said Addington. "Harry has a vision to make this team a championship contender and I am excited to be part of it." UPDATE 2: "I'm kind of scratching my head on that," Addington told AP. "I don't have any hard feelings or anything like that, I just don't have a real good idea of why the decision was made." Addington knew the performance of the #14 team was not up to par in the early part of the season - in fact, all three teams at SHR struggled early - but believed the team had turned a corner before Tony Stewart's season-ending Aug. 5 injury in a sprint car crash. "It was an option year, and after the accident, I figured we'd go on one more year," Addington said. "It's no secret we had our issues early in the season, but after Charlotte, the 600, we really turned things around. We won at Dover, and other than Sonoma, where we were running top-five before a spin, and Kentucky, where we did struggle, we'd really turned it around. Then came the accident, and we just don't know what could have come from the rest of the season. So I really don't know what happened there." Now he'll likely be paired with Justin Allgaier at Phoenix Racing. Chad Johnston named Stewart's crew chief, other SHR changes UPDATE Chad Johnston has signed on as the new crew chief for Tony Stewart and the #14 Stewart-Haas Racing team. He'll begin his new position in December.
"It's a great opportunity for me to be put with someone like Tony Stewart who is a proven winner, a proven champion," Johnston said. "Obviously, the expectations are high so I'm looking forward to prove what I can do and prove that I deserve this position." The second-generation racer most recently worked for Michael Waltrip Racing as Martin Truex Jr.'s crew chief. Johnston replaces Steve Addington on the #14 Chevy; Addington had been the crew chief for the past two seasons. Addington is expected to go to Phoenix Racing as crew chief in 2014. " Matt Borland has been named vice president of engineering. In this role, Borland will oversee all of the team's technical initiatives and various research and development projects. He will also transition from being an active crew chief to that of a mentor, specifically in regard to the crew chief position on the #41 Haas Automation team of driver Kurt Busch.
" Daniel Knost has been promoted from race engineer on the #39 team to crew chief for the #41 Haas Automation team with Busch. Knost joined SHR in 2008 when it was Haas-CNC Racing after earning master of science and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). Knost graduated from North Carolina State University in Raleigh with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 2001.
" Chad Johnston has been named crew chief for the #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 team of three-time Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart. Johnston comes to SHR from Michael Waltrip Racing where since June 2011 he was the crew chief for the #56 team and driver Martin Truex Jr. Johnston joined MWR in 2010 as a race engineer. Johnston replaces Steve Addington, who has left SHR to pursue other opportunities.
" Rodney Childers will be the crew chief for the #4 Budweiser/Jimmy John's team of driver Kevin Harvick. Childers joined SHR in late October from MWR, where since 2009 he was a crew chief, first with the #00 team of driver David Reutimann (2009-2011) and later with the #55 team of drivers Brian Vickers, Mark Martin and Waltrip (2012-2013).

Martins's SHR role not yet defined: Stewart-Haas Racing competition director Greg Zipadelli said that Mark Martin's 2014 role with the team "is not completely identified yet," but predicts the veteran will be a valuable addition after ostensibly running his last Sprint Cup for the foreseeable future race on Sunday. Martin may consult or test, but beyond his technical experience, Zipadelli said, Martin could be invaluable to a lineup of vocal, strong-willed personalities comprised of owner Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick and Danica Patrick. "A guy with that kind of experience, he's been to a lot of different race teams, he's worked for a lot of different manufacturers," Zipadelli told ESPN.com. "He was that guy that was a hot-head at one time. I think he can help all our drivers and myself with dealing with a lot of those things and sort of steer the ship a little bit." Martin will test Stewart's car until the three-time series champion is cleared to return from multiple leg fractures sustained in a Sprint Car wreck in August. Final scheduled NASCAR race for Martin: The Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead will be #14-Mark Martin's last scheduled Sprint Cup race. The first of what will be 882 career Sprint Cup starts came on April 5, 1981 at North Wilkesboro Speedway. He started fifth and finished 27th in a Bud Reeder-owned Pontiac. In that race were such legends as Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip, Richard Childress, Tim Richmond, Benny Parsons and Harry Gant. James Hylton, also in that race, was a young 46. Hylton retired earlier this year at age 79. Homestead will be Martin's 1,144th start across all NASCAR series. For Mark Martin, this year's edition of the series finale means the last scheduled Sprint Cup race of his storied career. In 31 years of competing at NASCAR's highest level, Martin has earned 40 wins, 56 poles, 271 top-fives, 453 top-10s and led a total of 12,879 laps in 881 career Sprint Cup starts. Although Martin never experienced the glory of a Sprint Cup title, he certainly put forth his share of championship-worthy seasons. Hendrick thinks Martin may race again: Mark Martin says he doesn't plan to race in the Sprint Cup Series next year. But one of his bigger fans and former car owners isn't so sure. "He's still super-competitive, and I wouldn't bet that he doesn't show up again," Rick Hendrick said before Sunday's AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Martin won five races for Hendrick from 2009-11. "Everywhere he goes, he's made a difference," said Hendrick, whose current stable includes Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kasey Kahne. "At his age (54), he deserves to take a break if he wants to, but he's still an awesome driver. I'm just telling you, I wouldn't be surprised, as good as he is, if someone (team) gets in a jam and needs a driver, they'll be calling him. And I bet he comes back." Stewart-Haas Racing Honors Fallen Firefighters: On the side of the #14 Stewart Haas Racing Chevy at Phoenix International Raceway, which is being driven by Mark Martin, is a decal honoring the 19 members of the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew who perished fighting a savage wildfire near the rural Arizona town of Yarnell earlier this year. In addition to the lives of the 19 elite firefighters, the blaze destroyed more than 100 buildings. "It wasn't that long ago when the firefighters lost their lives," said Mike Arning, SHR's director of communications. "And coming out here, you look at all the first responders, who not only take care of the competitors, but take care of the fans, and we just felt it was a small way to let folks know we haven't forgotten. Whether it's a corner worker who works for a fire department or folks making sure the fans coming to this race track remain safe, somebody probably has a connection to those firefighters in Prescott. Addington's status up in the air at Stewart Haas: With most of the major rides settled for 2014, the next part of Silly Season to unravel will be crew chiefs.At the top of the list is what will happen at Stewart-Haas Racing, which still needs a crew chief for new driver Kurt Busch [supposedly the new #41 team] and possibly could make a change for three-time Cup champion #14-Tony Stewart. Stewart crew chief Steve Addington said Friday that he has "no clue" about what he would be doing in 2014 or whether he would be back as Stewart's crew chief. SHR competition director Greg Zipadelli declined comment on who would be the crew chiefs for SHR next year, saying he hoped to finalize things in the next week as SHR expands from three to four teams. Chad Johnston, a crew chief at Michael Waltrip Racing who was out of a job when NAPA pulled its from Martin Truex Jr.'s #56 team, said Friday that he did not have anything finalized for next year. A move to SHR is a possibility. SHR already has hired Rodney Childers from MWR to be the crew chief for incoming driver Kevin Harvick, who is replacing Ryan Newman [switching from #39 to #4]. Martin's racing career may be over after Homestead: #14-Mark Martin's legendary racing career may be over after next week. While he wouldn't use the "retirement" word Friday while talking with reporters - he says the word has burned him in the past - Martin strongly hinted he would not race in 2014 and beyond. Martin said he made the decision not to race in January and has kept it between his friends and family. When he finished third in February's Daytona 500, he said he was pleased knowing it would be his last one. "It's time for me to open a new chapter," Martin said during a 24-minute interview Friday at Phoenix International Raceway. Martin will do testing next season for Stewart-Haas Racing, where he currently drives. Dillon says wreck like "roller coaster ride" Seconds after Austin Dillon tried to make what he hoped would be a race-winning move at Sunday's Talladega race, he found himself in an uncomfortable position: in the air and looking down at the rest of his competition. "It was pretty wild," Dillon said after his #14 car unexpectedly took flight. "I was watching cars just go underneath. It was like a cool roller coaster ride. You know that (cable) camera that zooms over the start/finish line? That's what it felt like. Just craziness going under you." Dillon was in third place on the last lap of the Camping World RV Sales 500 when he noticed fourth-place #17-Ricky Stenhouse Jr. start to duck out of line and make a move. Since Dillon had planned to make a run to the finish with second-place Dale Earnhardt Jr., he decided to try and block Stenhouse's move. But Stenhouse realized what was happening and tried to move back up. When Dillon did the same, they met in the middle and the #14 car suddenly snapped around and was facing oncoming traffic. "Oh, this is going to be bad," Dillon said to himself as he saw cars coming at him at 200 mph out of the corner of his eye. He turned the car around the right way as several drivers missed him, but Casey Mears couldn't avoid him at the last second and plowed right into the back of him. Remarkably, after Dillon landed, he was able to drive back to the garage and didn't even require a trip to the infield care center (which is mandatory only if a driver can't make it back around). Stewart ready for physical therapy soon: #14-Tony Stewart's infection has responded to treatment, and he should be cleared within two weeks for physical therapy, said Greg Zipadelli, competition director at Stewart-Haas Racing. Stewart had a third surgery on his right leg Oct. 7 for an infection. He noted in an online video chat this week on NASCAR.com he was looking forward to a doctor's visit to see how the leg was responding. Zipadelli said Friday at Talladega Superspeedway that "everything looked as good as it possibly could" with Stewart's leg.
Stewart's health was only part of the good news this week at Stewart-Haas Racing. Crew chief Rodney Childers tweeted Friday that he can begin work at the shop next week. Childers will be Kevin Harvick's crew chief next season. Zipadelli said that Michael Waltrip Racing released Childers from his contract, allowing Childers to begin working at Stewart-Haas Racing before the end of the season. Infection caused Stewart's latest surgery: Tony Stewart says he's eager for his doctor's appointment Wednesday to see how an infection that has sidetracked his recovery is healing. Stewart said in a video chat Tuesday night on NASCAR.com that the third surgery on his broken right leg Oct. 7 was because of the infection. "That was the biggest thing they talked about after the surgery,'' said Stewart, who had two surgeries shortly after he broke his right leg in a sprint car crash Aug. 5 in Iowa. "I was more worried about bones healing and skin healing. The doctor was more worried about infection and really said the first two months were kind of the critical time. We were at the end of that two months for the most part and, all of a sudden, a spot popped up that was infected and that caused the surgery last week. I went from starting to walk again - not great, not just walking around the house like normal, but I could take eight or 10 steps at a time - to having to spend the majority of the day again (after the surgery) laying down."
Stewart said he's thought about Wednesday's doctor visit for the last three days. He's curious to see how his leg is healing since the infected area has been wrapped. Stewart Undergoes Third Surgery on Leg UPDATE: #14-Tony Stewart underwent a third surgery on his right leg early on Monday, Oct. 7 to examine and close a wound on his shin stemming from the broken tibia and fibula he sustained in a sprint car crash Aug. 5 at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Stewart will remain hospitalized for observation. The surgery served as a proactive measure and team officials do not expect it to impact Stewart's return to the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet in 2014. Stewart's first surgery on Aug. 6 in Iowa served as a preliminary procedure to stabilize and clean the Grade 2 injury. The third surgery was necessitated, a team source said, because Stewart's injured right leg "was not healing as quickly as it should be." Stewart starts rehab on leg: Tony Stewart began a very long rehab assignment this week. Stewart who broke his tibia and fibula Aug. 5 in a sprint car race at Iowa, had surgery following the wreck and a second surgery Aug. 8 to insert a metal rod into his tibia. Stewart will work with a therapist "three times a week - Monday, Wednesday and Thursday - until he says I'm done." He said he won't push things too fast, thus jeopardizing the task at hand: a full recovery at the end of an expected four months of rehab. Though Stewart says he feels better, he still has both good and bad days. "There are days you can't sleep because you just can't get comfortable," Stewart said. "Then there are days when you feel like it's a hall of fame day all of a sudden. It's just weird because you can't predict when those days are going to happen." Though there had been speculation Stewart could be back in a race car for testing in December, that's out of the question for now. "No," Stewart said emphatically. "Not until probably the end of January to get back in a race car - maybe February, for sure." Gene Haas Foundation Gifts $1 Million to SME-Education Foundation: When Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) drivers #10-Danica Patrick and #39-Ryan Newman wheel their Chevrolets onto the track for the Sept. 29 AAA 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Dover, their racecars will spotlight the Gene Haas Foundation and its most recent grant recipient: the Society of Manufacturing Engineers - Education Foundation (SME-Education Foundation). The Gene Haas Foundation, formed in 1999 by SHR co-owner Gene Haas, recently gifted $1 million to the SME-Education Foundation with the money designated for scholarships in manufacturing training and education. Gene Haas ordered to forfeit $1 million on home sale: Let this be a lesson to those in the market for a pair of South Florida oceanfront mansions. Instead of sending someone to bid $12.4 million of your fortune at a live auction, consider showing up to wave the paddle yourself. That mistake may have cost California businessman and NASCAR team owner Gene Haas more than $1 million. A Miami-Dade judge ruled this week that Haas reneged on his high-stakes winning bid for two Golden Beach homes in 2011 and must fork over his deposit plus interest. Haas sent a proxy to the auction, which took place in the living room of one of the two palaces up for bid. Brothers Robert and Steven Fox owned their estates at 229 and 401 Ocean Blvd. since 1990. When the retired cardiologists and their wives decided to downsize into neighboring Hollywood Beach condos a few miles north on A1A, they put their Golden Beach homes up for sale for about $24 million total. But after two years with no buyers, the brothers took a radical approach: They held an absolute auction on Nov. 10, 2011. About 15 bidders applied and were vetted, including Lake Worth developer Albert Wadsworth, who represented Haas. Haas, bidding through Wadsworth, didn't want just one of the houses - he wanted both. The auction ended with Haas' successful $12.4 million offer for the two luxury properties. But when it came time to sign the paperwork, Wadsworth backed out. Haas never bought the homes. The brothers sued Haas' company, Haas Automation, for breach of contract, demanding the $1 million deposit that Haas placed in escrow in advance of the auction. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Beth Bloom ruled in favor of the Foxes, and on Tuesday ordered Haas to turn over the deposit and about $87,000 in interest. Martin expects to test for SHR in 2014: Mark Martin said Tuesday he expects to continue to work with Stewart-Haas Racing in 2014, after Tony Stewart returns back to the cockpit of the #14 SHR Chevy. Martin and his wife, Arlene, were at SHR's shop in Kannapolis, N.C., on Tuesday during Stewart's first press conference since breaking his right leg in two places in a sprint car accident in August. Afterward, Martin told FOXSports.com he likely will do testing for SHR next year, as well as work with Danica Patrick on helping her get more comfortable behind the wheel of her #10 SHR Chevy. Martin is currently filling in for Stewart, driving the #14 as the team driver/co-owner recovers from his injuries. Stewart hates to test and said he would welcome having Martin continue on with the team next year - and with Stewart not expected to get back in the car before Daytona in February 2014, SHR needs someone to test. Martin is the logical candidate. Martin said discussions with SHR on continuing testing and consulting have been ongoing. Stewart expects to return fully healed, OK with Busch as teammate; full transcript: Tony Stewart asserted Tuesday at the Stewart-Haas race shop that his broken bones would mend in time for the 2014 Daytona 500 and that the organization he co-owns with Gene Haas was never fractured in the first place. "They're looking at the beginning of February, which isn't a bad deal," said Stewart, who broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg during a Sprint Car accident Aug. 5 in Iowa. "I guess if you had to have this injury happen -- it could have happened a month later, and it would have gotten us in a really big bind for next year." Next year's Daytona 500 is scheduled for Feb. 23, and Stewart expects to be in the field, barring unexpected complications with his recovery. Stewart arrived at the dais for Tuesday's press conference in a wheelchair and maneuvered into a seat behind a podium that featured the Twitter hashtag "#SmokeWillRise," a nod to his widely known nickname. As expected, the subject of Haas' unilateral hiring of Kurt Busch was a hot-button topic, but Stewart was quick to dispel talk of a rift or a power struggle within his organization. For the first time reporters heard Stewart's graphic description of the wreck that has caused the three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion to miss the final 14 races of the season as he recuperates. Stewart described a dust cloud at Southern Iowa Speedway, somewhat like the cloud of smoke in the movie "Days of Thunder," that obscured his view of the car in his path. Stewart wore shorts to the press conference, with his knee exposed, revealing a long scar held intact by a series of butterfly bandages. On his foot was a large insulated boot, protecting the lower leg in which a titanium rod was inserted during surgery to reinforce the tibia. Martin focused on finishing out 2013: #14-Mark Martin was asked Saturday about his plans for 2014:
Martin: "You know I was thinking about it and had some discussions before Tony's (Stewart) injury. I will be real honest with you I could care less about 2014 right now because I am doing all I can to tread water. Making this change was pretty huge because not only is it different crew guys work on the car which really isn't a huge thing, but it's a whole different thought process, it's a whole different bunch of guys that I didn't have a chance to go to test in February and go hang out in the shop. Just jumping right in it added, I don't know, about three races to my schedule what I had so I picked up three additional races. So I am really pushed and driven to try to get immersed in this team and figure out what I like in these cars so that we can start putting that in there week to week. This is not like making a change over the winter. It's not like stepping out of a MWR (Michael Waltrip Racing) Toyota into even a (Joe) Gibbs Toyota like I did at Martinsville. There is just a lot going on.
So, for me, making a decision on what I do in 2014 is not important right now. I'm in no hurry because I'm not really worried about what I do. I do have a focus on what I can do in NASCAR. I want to do more in NASCAR than drive race cars. I want to do more than that. I had a good time at MWR and they let me be a part of that organization a little bit more than just to show up and drive, driver; and I want to grow more of that. So that's of great interest to me and is where my primary focus was before Tony's (Stewart) #14 car came up. After that, it's like I'm not worried. Martin-For-Stewart Shakes Up Owner Chase Possibilities: No owner whose driver failed to reach the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup has ever qualified for postseason riches. The 2013 season could prove to be the exception to the rule - and in a most unexpected manner. Heading into Bristol's IRWIN Tools Night race, it's business as usual. Kasey Kahne and the #5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy team and Martin Truex Jr. and the #56 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota team hold the provisional Wild Cards. Both could make the Chase as top-10 finishers in the regular season. Kahne and Truex are four and 10 points, respectively, behind 10th-place #16-Greg Biffle.
Should they advance, the door would open for two teams which have undergone massive changes in the past few days. The #14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevy stands third in owner Wild Card standings having scored the same number of points - 653 - as the #56 team. Three-time champion Tony Stewart is finished for the season as he recuperates from a broken leg suffered earlier this month in an Iowa sprint car accident. His replacement for 12 of the remaining 13 races is Mark Martin who, teamed with Michael Waltrip and Brian Vickers, has given the #55 MWR Toyota a shot at a Chase owner Wild Card. The #55 is sixth in owner Wild Card standings on the strength of now-regular driver Vickers' victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Stewart Plans to Keep Racing Sprint Cars: Tony Stewart says he will return to sprint car racing next season, according to Kendra Jacobs, co-host of Motor Racing Network's "Winged Nation.'' Jacobs visited Stewart on Monday night. She said on Tuesday's show that Stewart gave her explicit instructions to tell "Winged Nation'' listeners he will continue to race sprint cars despite breaking his right tibia and fibula in a sprint car crash Aug. 5 at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Jacobs said on "Winged Nation'' that Stewart's sprint car crew is preparing for his return. Stewart Out for Remainder of 2013 Season; Martin in for 12 races; Dillon one: Tony Stewart is out for the remainder of the 2013 season after suffering a broken right tibia and fibula in a sprint car crash Aug. 5 at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Stewart, a three-time Sprint Cup champion, is expected to return to the seat of the #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) in time for pre-season testing in January 2014. In the interim, Mark Martin will drive the #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevy Aug. 23-24 at Bristol and in 11 other races. Austin Dillon, who filled in for Stewart this past weekend at Michigan and finished 14th in his 10th career Sprint Cup start, will drive the #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevy Oct. 18-20 at Talladega.
"After consulting with Tony's doctors and speaking with Tony, we agreed it was best for him to focus on his recovery," said Greg Zipadelli, competition director, SHR. "For the No. 14 team, our focus is on positioning them for a run at the owner championship. Deal could put Martin in #14 seat UPDATE 2 announcement today: A deal is in the works that would offer Brian Vickers more seat time in the #55 Aaron's Toyota - and allow Mark Martin to pursue the opportunity to drive the #14 for the injured Tony Stewart. On Saturday, multiple sources told Fox Sports that Toyota offered Martin its blessing in order to enable Vickers - who was named the full-time driver of the #55 Michael Waltrip Racing Camry on Tuesday - additional races to gel with the team. Vickers is currently racing for the Nationwide Series championship with Joe Gibbs Racing. He is fifth in the NNS point standings. Before SHR inquired on Martin's behalf, the plan was for Vickers to race at Bristol, Martinsville and New Hampshire, where he raced last month. Team owner Michael Waltrip is scheduled to drive the #55 at Talladega. Martin originally was signed up for the balance of races. Certainly, MWR and Aaron's would have to sign off on Martin before SHR can green light the deal. UPDATE: Michael Waltrip Racing and its sponsors are still trying to decide whether Mark Martin can replace the injured Tony Stewart in his #14 Chevy. If Martin leaves MRW to fill in for Stewart, Brian Vickers would complete the season in MWR's #55 Toyota, which he currently shares with Martin. MWR Executive Vice President Ty Norris declined comment Sunday morning on the status of the negotiations, while team co-owner Michael Waltrip said nothing had changed as far as Martin's situation. Martin looking at options; #14 ride? #55-Mark Martin says he's been contacted to drive Tony Stewart's car but calls any such move "complicated."
"It's more complicated than it looks at face value," Martin said Friday about driving the #14 car while Stewart recovers from a broken leg suffered in a sprint car crash last week in Iowa. Martin is in his last season driving for Michael Waltrip Racing with his contract expiring. Brian Vickers, who has shared driving duties with Martin the past two seasons, will drive Martin's car full-time starting next year. That could make Martin available to drive Stewart's car immediately, giving Vickers the chance to run the remaining races for MWR to prepare for next season. There are several roadblocks, though. A key challenge is that Martin's ride is with Toyota and Stewart's car is a Chevrolet. Both Martin's car and Stewart's car are battling to get into the Chase for the owner's title. There also are sponsor considerations and other such contracts. If Vickers were to take over for Martin, then he would need approval from Joe Gribbs Racing since he's running the Nationwide schedule for that team.
There are just as many questions about what Martin will do next season. "The reason I haven't talked about 2014 is because I felt like the landscape was probably going to change, and it's starting to change rapidly," he said. Martin says other competitors have asked if he's going to share driving duties with Kyle Larson for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing next season after the team decided not to retain Juan Pablo Montoya after this year. EGR has not made any announcement on who will drive that car next season. Kyle Larson told Motor Racing Network on Friday that he's focused on his Nationwide campaign. "I promise no one has talked to anyone on my side from Ganassi," Martin said. "I know that it's really churning out there. There hasn't even been the first discussion about that. I'm as interested as you guys are about what Chip Ganassi has up his sleeve." One thing Martin can say for certain is that he won't drive full-time in Cup next year. Q) WOULD IT BE EASIER TO HAVE ONE DRIVER FOR ALL THE RACES TONY STEWART WILL MISS RATHER THAN CHANGING DRIVERS EACH WEEKEND?
ZIPADELLI: "There's pros and cons to it. We're certainly looking at trying probably in the next three to four days, before we get to Bristol everything will be ironed out for the rest of the year. We've had hurdles that we've had to get through so we are looking at that and we're working on that. It will be two drivers probably the rest of the year just to do exactly what you said and just try to get them guys to try to build some chemistry and get the best finishes we can. We're still 11th in owner's points, that's a big deal and we can look at that and that's kind of what we're focused on right now. We are working on that, it's just too early to talk about."
Q) ARE YOU WORKING UNDER THE ASSUMPTION THAT TONY STEWART WILL BE OUT THE REST OF THE YEAR OR IS THERE A CHANCE HE WILL BE BACK THIS SEASON?
ZIPADELLI: "We don't know that yet. I'm working under the assumption that he's (Tony Stewart) out for the next month or so or longer. He went to the doctor's this week, he had a decent visit. No setbacks. Basically, very simple instructions, stay in his bed with your leg up over your heart for the next seven days and then come back and see me. We'll reevaluate you and tell you what you can do. That's what he's doing. I saw him Wednesday night, we spent some time together, spent a couple hours together yesterday just kind of filling him in on all the things that we've got going on. He's in great spirits and they changed some of his medicines and things of that nature. He's going through a little bit of a transition period, but like I said the doctor's appointment went well or as good as it can. He said the next seven to 14 days will tell a lot of how it heals, how those things take and we'll certainly continue to update you guys as we can. It's going to be a really slow process."
Q) IS AUSTIN DILLON ONE OF THE TWO THAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT FOR MORE RACES GOING FORWARD?
ZIPADELLI: "Yeah, obviously Austin's (Dillon) done a great job in the Truck Series and Nationwide Series. He's got a long-standing relationship with Johnny Morris and Bass Pro Shop so we are talking about more races. We don't have anything concreted yet. We're looking at that other option and just seeing how many races that they can do. It looks like one more race at least for Austin through the rest of the year with us."
Q) GREG, WHY WAS AUSTIN DILLON THE RIGHT CHOICE THIS WEEKEND AND AUSTIN, HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE A SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND?
ZIPADELLI: "From our side, like I mentioned earlier, he (Austin Dillon) just ran here and did a great job in the spring race. Runs well here in the Nationwide. He's done some testing in these cars so we could have found a guy in the Truck Series or something like that who doesn't have a ton of time in these race cars, which I felt was -- not that they wouldn't do a good job, but I think these cars are a little bit different and the biggest thing is that he did a good job here in the spring. We looked at that, the association with Bass Pro Shop, both sponsors were on board. That is a big priority to us that our partners are on board with everything we do. Obviously, we let them down with Tony (Stewart) not being in the car the rest of the year and we need to do the best we can to represent them and they are a big part of our decisions."
Q) HOW ACTIVE IS TONY STEWART WHEN YOU VISIT WITH HIM AND WHAT IS HIS MINDSET?
ZIPADELLI: "His (Tony Stewart) mindset is pretty good. He's in a lot of pain at times. He was in a wheelchair yesterday when we had our meeting with three or four of us over there for a couple hours yesterday going over things at the shop and what we were doing moving forward. For the most part, like I said, he's supposed to be in bed for the next seven days with his foot up above his heart I guess is what the doctor said. It needs to be elevated just to keep the swelling and things of that nature down."
Q) WHAT IS THE TEAM'S MINDSET ABOUT THE REST OF THE SEASON?
ZIPADELLI: "Everybody has been pretty good honestly. We've been so busy trying to work through all these details and seats and seat brackets and all the things that have gone on in the last two weeks that these guys haven't had time to stop I don't think really and reflect on what's going on in the year. Like I said, we're 11th in owner's points and that's the message that we keep driving to these guys that it is business as usual. Dillon to miss Nationwide qualifying to practice #14 car: Nationwide Series points leader Austin Dillon plans to start the race Saturday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course from the rear of the field, as he will miss qualifying Saturday morning while practicing a Sprint Cup car in Michigan. Dillon, who is replacing injured Tony Stewart in the Stewart-Haas Racing #14 car at Michigan International Speedway, plans to participate in as much Cup practice as possible Saturday morning. Dillon said Tuesday he was unsure who would qualify his Richard Childress Racing car for the Nationwide race. NASCAR rules require that a driver must start from the rear if there is a driver change from qualifying to the race. Because Mid-Ohio is new to the Nationwide schedule, the teams will get 5.5 hours of practice Thursday, plenty of time for Dillon to get used to the car and the course, where he's already tested this year. The tentative plan is to have Max Papis, who is already driving the Richard Childress Racing #33 Nationwide car, to shake down Dillon's car Friday while Dillon is in Michigan. Dillon has a three-point lead on Sam Hornish Jr., a five-point lead on Regan Smith, a 12-point lead on Elliott Sadler and an 18-point lead on Brian Vickers with 12 races left in the Nationwide season.(Sporting News)(8-14-2013)
Stewart-Haas firming up replacement driver plans UPDATES - Dillon at Michigan: Greg Zipadelli, competition director for Stewart-Haas Racing, said after the race [at Watkins Glen] that the team would make its decision Monday afternoon on who will drive Stewart's car next weekend at Michigan International Speedway. Zipadelli also said he hoped to have the team's plans for the rest of the year set by Wednesday. Although no timetable has been set for Stewart's return, indications are it's unlikely he'll race again this season. "Some cards are falling by the hour," Zipadelli said. "We'll take (Sunday night) and work things out. I want to get with (Stewart), and make sure he agrees and is happy with what we're going to do." UPDATE 2: Greg Zipadelli said the team expects to know more about Stewart's future after a doctor's appointment Wednesday. Stewart was released Sunday night from a North Carolina hospital after a second surgery. "In the next couple of days, we'll probably be able to lay out the whole schedule," Zipadelli said. There hasn't been a driver named for the Aug. 24 race at Birstol Motor Speedway as SHR considers substitutes for Stewart on a race-to-race basis. Zipadelli said Dillon could become the short-term answer if he performed well at Michigan. "We'd rather have one or two drivers if we can work it out, that'll give us some consistency and build some communication between the crew and driver and give us our best chance. We're working on some of that stuff now. It may be more than two, maybe three or four. If that's the case, we'll look at each individual racetrack and see who's available who runs best at the track and make the best choice we can." Dillon also will be racing in Saturday's Nationwide event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. Dillon has talked to Stewart-Haas: Nationwide Series points leader Austin Dillon confirmed he has had talks with Stewart-Haas Racing about possibly driving the #14 car in place of the injured Tony Stewart. Dillon, a 23-year-old Richard Childress Racing driver, has strong ties and associate sponsorship from Bass Pro Shops, which also is a primary sponsor of Stewart in Cup. "We've been talking a little bit," Dillon said Saturday morning after Nationwide Series qualifying at Watkins Glen. "We'll see. I feel pretty confident that we can do it and be fine. Hopefully we can do some of them. I'd like to." Regan Smith would be open to filling in with #14 team: Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Friday he would be for JR Motorsports driver Regan Smith filling in for Tony Stewart even though Smith is racing for a Nationwide championship. Smith said that he "would be open to the possibilities" and has texted with Stewart-Haas Racing officials this week but not had formal conversations. Next week is [tricky] with the Sprint Cup series at Michigan International Speedway and the Nationwide Series competing at Mid-Ohio. While both tracks are relatively close, their schedules do not align well. That would make it challenging for a driver to go back and forth. One option for Stewart-Haas Racing at Michigan could be Scott Riggs, who has tested on ovals for the team. After that, the Cup and Nationwide Series will be together most of the rest of the year. The exception is when the Cup series races Sept. 22 at New Hampshire and Nationwide runs at Kentucky the day before. Smith, who is second in the Nationwide point standings to Austin Dillon, is a logical choice for a variety of reasons. Smith has Cup experience, having run 171 races and won the 2011 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Smith is an easy pick because of the ties to Hendrick Motorsports. Both Jr Motorsports and Stewart-Haas Racing have ties to car owner Rick Hendrick's team. • There currently is no timeline for Stewart's recovery or return. They will know more after the second surgery is completed;
• The team will "absolutely" need a substitute driver for at least the next 2-3 races;
• They are talking to candidates to fill in, but don't have a timeline for an announcement; possibly in the next day or so;
• Zipadelli says that as many races as Tony runs the team is lucky that this is the first time they are having to deal with this issue;
• Stewart Haas will evaluate what races Stewart competes in going forward, but there will not necessarily be any changes.

Stewart has second leg surgery: #14-Tony Stewart underwent a successful second surgery on his right leg Thursday, Aug. 8 after suffering a broken tibia and fibula in a sprint car crash Monday night, Aug. 5 at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The first surgery, which happened early Tuesday, Aug. 6 in Iowa, served as a preliminary procedure to stabilize and clean the Grade 2 injury. The second surgery, by a specialist in North Carolina, involved inserting a metal rod inside the tibia, pressing it to its anatomic position. Stewart will remain hospitalized for observation. A discharge date has not been determined. A spokesman for Stewart said the 42-year-old driver broke his right tibia and fibula and had surgery after he was transported to a local hospital. An update was expected Tuesday afternoon, and Stewart-Haas Racing did not immediately announce a replacement driver for Stewart's #14 Chevrolet at Watkins Glen, where Stewart is a five-time winner. The team did cancel its scheduled Tuesday test at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The sprint car accident came a day after Stewart finished ninth in the NASCAR race at Pocono Raceway. He's 11th in the Sprint Cup standings with five races to go until the Chase for the Cup field is set. Missing the Watkins Glen race means Stewart likely will miss the Chase. Stewart causes large wreck in sprint car race UPDATE: The most well-known driver in the winged-sprint car race Tuesday at Canandaigua Motorsports Park almost became the show-stopper. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Tony Stewart was right at the center of a crash that involved 15 cars on lap 7 of the 25-lap feature race on the half-mile oval dirt track. Stewart, seen later chatting with crew members of other teams, said in an interview over the track's public address system that the accident was his fault. Alysha Ruggles, a 19-year old driver from Canandaigua, was taken to Thompson Hospital in her hometown because of pain in her lower back caused by the accident. Witnesses said that Ruggles' car hit the wheel of another, went into the air 20 to 30 feet and came to a stop 50 to 60 feet later. Crew members for the car driven by Paul Kinney of Canastota said that they believed Kinney was taken to Rochester General Hospital. Kinney had pain in his back and legs but his exact injuries were unknown. "I have never seen anything this bad in a sprint car race, I don't think, or this many cars being taken out in one wreck," said sprint car driver Mike Stelter of Webster. "At least Tony Stewart manned up and said he caused the wreck. "He tried to put the car where it didn't belong. UPDATE: Alysha Ruggles, the 19-year-old who suffered a compression fracture in her back during a sprint-car race Tuesday in a race with Tony Stewart, is home from the hospital. Ruggles, whose mother took her to the hospital after she began complaining of back pain following the accident, suffered a compression fracture in her back, according to the (Rochester) Democrat and Chronicle. "Right now, she has to take it one day at a time," Wendy Ruggles told the newspaper. "We had a big scare; she was close to being paralyzed."The track's Facebook page posted that Ruggles was released from the hospital Thursday. Ducks Unlimited to be featured on #14 at Daytona: The Ducks Unlimited logo will appear on Bass Pro Shops' #14 Chevy and truck during two of the biggest races of the year to bring awareness of the organization's ongoing conservation efforts to NASCAR fans. Bass Pro Shops Founder Johnny Morris made the announcement recently at the 2013 Ducks Unlimited Convention. Ducks Unlimited's commitment to conservation for the past 76 years will be honored with special logos placed prominently on the Bass Pro Shops-sponsored racecar and truck. The Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway on July 6 will be the first race where the Ducks Unlimited logo will appear on the Bass Pro Shops #14 Sprint Cup Series car driven by Tony Stewart. The special logo will appear again on Oct. 19 at the Talladega Superspeedway on the Bass Pro Shops #14 Camping World Truck Series truck driven by Ty Dillon. "Conservation is the only way we can ensure our grandchildren and their children will have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors like our generation has, and Ducks Unlimited has been promoting conservation for the past 76 years," Morris said. "It's a tremendous organization with a great mission, and I'm proud to call myself a DU member." Habitat conservation is the Ducks Unlimited mission. Gordon, Stewart & Johnson looking for first win at Kentucky: In the 2012 season finale at Homestead, #24-Jeff Gordon was victorious leaving only one track that Gordon has not won at in the Sprint Cup Series, Kentycky Speeedway.
Kentucky is one of only two tracks the Sprint Cup Series visits where #14-Tony Stewart has yet to record a Sprint Cup victory. The other is Darlington Raceway, where Stewart at least has a NASCAR Nationwide Series win (2008).
Kentucky Speedway is one of five of the 23 tracks on the Sprint Cup schedule where #48-Jimmie Johnson has yet to win. Michigan International Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Watkins Glen International and Homestead-Miami Speedway are the others.

Stewart says Addington is not being replaced: #14-Tony Stewart's win in the FedEx 400 gave him an opportunity to squelch rumors of crew chief Steve Addington possibly being replaced. "I was ticked," he said after the race Sunday. "I don't need that crap. I've got enough stuff to worry about, keeping three cars competitive and trying to get them in that state and having to deal with a bunch of bullcrap that's inaccurate and speculation." You might want to talk to the guys that write the checks, the guys that work there, and find out the facts before you guys go throwing darts on the dartboard," he told the media. "I'll be honest, it pissed me off because it was a big distraction to my team, my organization. It kept us from doing our job, because people are hearing humors and reading what you guys write, and it was totally inaccurate and unprofessional in my opinion." A three-time Cup champion, Stewart is expected to regularly compete for wins. He fired crew chief Darian Grubb even though they made the Chase in 2011, and then won the championship together that season. Stewart wins the FedEx 400: #14-Tony Stewart won the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Dover International Speedway for his 1st win of 2013, 3rd win at Dover and 48th career win. He took the lead from #42-Montoya with 2 laps to go and won by .788 second.
#42-Montoya finished 2nd, tying his best finish on an oval course, followed by #24-Gordon, #18-Busch, #2-Keselowski, #15-Bowyer, #22-Logano, #29-Harvick, #55-Martin, and #88-Earnhardt Jr.
NASCAR determined that #48-Johnson jumped the final restart with 19 laps remaining. He was black flagged, had to serve a pass through penalty, and finished 17th. Johnson said that Montoya spun the tires on the restart.
Polesitter #11-Hamlin, after running near the front most of the race, cut a tire late and finished 34th.
There were 21 lead changes among 11 drivers and 7 cautions for 32 yellow flag laps.
The average speed was 123.172mph. NASCAR no longer announces the track attendance.

Code 3 Associates on the #14 at Dover: When a deadly EF5 tornado roared through Moore, Okla., May 20, lives were shattered and property was destroyed. Amid the chaos immediately surrounding the tornado, families searched for loved ones. Some of those loved ones were of the four-legged variety, ranging from beloved family pets to valuable farm animals. More than a week after the tornado cut a two-mile wide swath of destruction across Moore, children are being reunited with their pets and farmers are able to reclaim lost livestock. Reuniting people with their animals is Code 3 Associates, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization specializing in animal rescue and recovery in disaster areas. Longmont, Colo.-based Code 3 Associates has been a partner of Stewart-Haas Racing since 2012, where the collaboration has led to increased recognition for the efforts of Code 3 Associates and, in turn, increased donations to the national response team that at the request of local government officials provides animal rescue and recovery during any kind of disaster. Stewart not happy with blocking: #14-Tony Stewart said he loves rookie #17-Ricky Stenhouse Jr. "like he's family," but is fed up with how Stenhouse and other young drivers are racing. "Ricky Stenhouse, I'd choke him right now if I could get to him," Stewart told Sirius XM Radio after Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600. "One more lap of having to mess around with him... " Stewart cited his strong anti-blocking stance as the reason he's upset with Stenhouse, who also happens to be the boyfriend of Stewart's own rookie driver, #10-Danica Patrick. Stewart did not name her specifically. Stenhouse and Patrick were involved in a wreck Sunday night that ensnared defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski, who shouldered the blame for starting the crash that knocked him out of the race. "Everybody that thinks this crap of blocking is productive, they don't know honestly what racing is all about," Stewart said. "And the guys that do it who think it's acceptable, I lose respect for them every day." Stewart said he wants to sit in on one of NASCAR's regular rookie meetings just to hear what NASCAR officials tell the drivers. Zipadelli says Cars to Blame: Greg Zipadelli, the competition director at Stewart-Haas Racing and longtime confidante of Tony Stewart, said the team has fallen behind on technology relative to the top NASCAR Sprint Cup teams. Zipadelli said the combination of adding a third car for Danica Patrick, converting to the new Generation-6 cars and shuffling personnel internally has left SHR well behind top teams like Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports so far this season. Coming into Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, #39-Ryan Newman is 17th in points, #14-Stewart 21st and #10-Patrick 28th. No crew chief changes for Stewart Haas Racing: Despite a dismal season to date, there are no crew chief changes planned at Stewart-Haas Racing [#10-Patrick, #14-Stewart & #39-Newman], a high-ranking team official told SPEED.com Monday morning. "We've all won races together and championships together, we're going to pull ourselves out of this together," the team official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. After Saturday night's Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, team co-owner Tony Stewart spent nearly two hours in the team hauler, meeting with crew chief Steve Addington and team engineers to work on solving the team's handling issues. Stewart thinks Kurt Busch could make Indy 500: Consider Tony Stewart officially jealous that fellow NASCAR driver Kurt Busch gets to test an Indy car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway later this week. The five-time Indianapolis 500 starter said that he plans to call Busch "to see if there's anything I can do to help him." "There's not a doubt in my mind that he could make the (500's) field," Stewart said following a sponsor event at the garage where he stores his classic cars. "If he gets with the right team - and obviously he's going with Andretti - I don't see any problem making the starting field for sure." DO YOU STILL FEEL THE SAME WAY YOU DO ABOUT BLOCKING?
"Yeah, my stance has never changed about blocking. Everybody has got a different opinion. I know the last two weeks everybody has tried to make a comparison to the Talladega deal. Talladega is a little different deal than the rest of it. I don't like it at Daytona and Talladega either, but it's the position we are put in there. What happened at California is a different deal. The people that are trying to compare the two are people that honestly I've read who has written it. It's disappointing that they don't understand the sport any better than that, but there is a huge difference between the two. It's our jobs as drivers to go out there and try to pass people. That is what racing is about. We didn't have blocking 10 years ago. I don't know where all of a sudden it became a common deal or some people think it's alright to do now and think it's common practice. I don't believe in it. I don't believe it should be common practice."
AT RESTRICTOR PLATE TRACKS IT'S A NECESSARY EVIL?
"We don't have a choice. We can't even get away from each other there. It's not so much that you are trying to block as much as you are trying to make that guy that you are trying to get in front of push you. We don't have the luxury of running on our own there. You have to have somebody pushing you. So if there is a line coming you want that faster line to pick you up and push you. The last half of a lap at Talladega is different than a restart with 15 to go at California."

UPDATE: Sprint Cup Series director John Darby addressed the media Tuesday afternoon and discussed the decision to not issue fines;
Q. Going back to the decision not to penalize anybody there, Stewart did cut off Logano on pit road, and started an incident there. Can you tell me why the governing body decided there was nothing wrong there?
JOHN DARBY: Yeah, all of the post-race incidents, a few years ago, we backed away from micromanaging drivers' emotions. You would hope in today's world that if somebody didn't win a race, they would be upset about it for whatever reason. That's what our drivers do is they try to win races. So the emotions that follow a race sometime, as long as stuff -- and keep in mind, there's the checks and the balances, but a couple of drivers at the end of the race arguing a little bit doesn't create a foul in our world today. The crews did a great job of managing their drivers to make sure that it didn't cross the line to where there was physical violence or anything like that, and that's what you would hope. That's just another example of the state of competition in NASCAR racing, and the disappointments that come sometimes when you don't win the race.
