NASCAR teams join forces with Hope For The Warriors: Several NASCAR teams and drivers will join Hope For the Warriors this Memorial Day weekend to honor several fallen service members during the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. With the NASCAR Salutes initiative driving a patriotic theme for the weekend, Hope For The Warriors has capitalized on its relationships within the NASCAR garage to let several Gold Star families know that their loved ones are still remembered this Memorial Day weekend. The initiative incorporates drivers from Richard Childress Racing, BK Racing and Front Row Motorsports, who have partnered with Hope For The Warriors, to not only honor the fallen service members, but also to host the Gold Star families at Sunday's Coca-Cola 600. The Gold Star families will gather for a private dinner on Saturday night before heading to Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday morning. On race day, Newman, Buescher, DiBenedetto and David Ragan have each agreed to do private meet and greets with the group. The families will have an opportunity to attend the drivers meeting and pose for photos with the drivers and cars while lined up on the grid during prerace. On a near weekly basis, Hope For The Warriors brings service members to the track through their Drive For Hope program, which focuses on engaging transitioning service members in a unique social setting while giving them an opportunity to learn about prospective careers, make networking connections and realize different ways their skills can transition as they reintegrate into the civilian sector.(PR)(5-27-2016)

David Ragan Secures Ride with BK Racing UPDATE: Despite proving he can win at NASCAR's highest level and feeling like he's in his prime, David Ragan didn't know if he'd be able to race this year. "You can't do it forever, but you want to retire when it's your time or on your terms," said Ragan. The Unadilla (GA) native was without a spot driving for any NASCAR team for 2016 after splitting time between three racing teams in 2015. Months passed where he worked the phones himself, drawing on contacts with owners, sponsors and friends made through years of racing. Finally, he found the right opportunity. "It's a big relief to have the opportunity to go race full-time in the Sprint Cup series," said Ragan. The 30-year-old driver is the new face of BK Racing's #23 Dr. Pepper Toyota. Ragan has proven he can win, with victories at Daytona in 2011 and Talladega in 2013. He's raced for big teams, including Roush Fenway Racing for several years and a fill-in role with Joe Gibbs Racing last season while Kyle Busch was injured. BK Racing is a much smaller team with a different feel. "The pressure's there, but it's a little different," said Ragan. "You sometimes have more fun [with a smaller team]. You get to work with a closer knit group of employees that are real happy to be here." Ragan is set to run a full slate of Sprint Cup Series races starting with the Daytona 500. "You don't want to burn any bridges, but you want to keep everything healthy. It's a competitive sport we're in. It'll feel real good when I can beat those guys."(FOX5)(1-25-2016)
UPDATE: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series veteran David Ragan will join the BK Racing line-up to pilot the #23 Toyota Camry for the 2016 season. Ragan will join teammate Matt DiBenedetto at BK Racing, which will field two full-time Sprint Cup entries this season. During his 15-year career across all three national touring divisions, Ragan has claimed four victories, 33 top-fives, and 93 top-tens. His most recent trip to Victory Lane came at Talladega Superspeedway in the 2013 Aaron's 499. "I'm happy to be part of something that has so much growth potential," said Ragan. "(Team owner) Ron (Devine) has steadily built his program over the last five years. He's made an even greater commitment in 2016 with new cars, equipment, and additional personnel. I feel that we'll be in a position to bring the team to the next level. I'm looking forward to the season."
Team owner, Ron Devine is confident in his new driver. "We're very excited to have a driver of David's caliber join our team," said Devine. "In addition to being a race winner, I feel that his input and leadership qualities will benefit the team on many levels. Our entire organization is energized to work with him." Welcome Back, Dr Pepper, The one of a kind soft drink, whose involvement with BK Racing began in 2011, will be back on board the #23 Toyota Camry as a primary sponsor for multiple races throughout the 2016 NASCAR season. Dr Pepper associate branding will also appear on all of BK Racing's cars throughout the season. "We are thrilled to be partnering with BK Racing for the fifth year and excited about the new heights that this team will be able to reach with the addition of David Ragan," says Jaxie Alt, SVP of Marketing, Dr Pepper. Additional sponsorship for the #23 team will be announced in the coming weeks.(BK Racing)(1-25-2016)
Ragan gets a ride: Sources have confirmed that David Ragan has a deal to drive the #23 Dr. Pepper Toyota for BK Racing in 2016. Heading into the season-finale at Homestead in 2015, Ragan was the favorite to drive the #9 Ford (new the #44) for Richard Petty Motorsports but a last-minute influx of sponsorship and cash helped foist Brian Scott into the driver's seat. Although the details of the agreement are still in their infancy and haven't yet, been made public, sources did confirm that Ragan had a deal. Attempts to reach out to Ragan regarding his future have been unsuccessful and in the past he said he didn't want to say anything that might jinx an opportunity. When contacted, a representative for BK Racing declined to comment on the report. The ride was previous piloted by J.J. Yeley and then by Jeb Burton in a car (from #23 to #26) switch last season. There has been no word on Yeley's or Burton's futures.(Kickin' the Tires)

Marlowe close to sale of stake in BK Racing: Social media has grown to become the megaphone for all things these days, from breaking news and marketing products to communicating with friends and even showing off what's for dinner. But using the medium to advertise the sale of a professional sports team? That's one of the few things that hadn't been done - until recently, that is. NASCAR team investor Anthony Marlowe said last week that his plan to sell his 10 percent stake in BK Racing via Twitter is bearing fruit. Marlowe, who joined BK Racing last year from now-defunct Swan Racing, is believed to be the first sports team owner to advertise the sale of a stake in a team on the social media platform. And according to Marlowe, the current "lead sled dog" for the sale found out about the opportunity from two tweets he sent out in recent months. "We're moving swiftly toward getting a deal done by the end of the year," Marlowe said. The asking price is $1 million. Marlowe's first tweet on the subject came in mid-September, when he announced the sale, the amount of equity involved and his contact info. He then sent a second message - this time a promoted tweet - in mid-October, noting the stake's price and that the sale was open only to accredited investors who could receive venture financing. Marlowe believes he can turn a slight profit from his initial investment - something that many former NASCAR team owners never had the opportunity to do. "With the prospective charter system being discussed, I'm looking at this as a window of opportunity where I'm likely selling too early," he said. "But it's an opportunity to get out whole or make a little bit of money, something that 95 percent of NASCAR owners up until this point had a very difficult time doing." Marlowe, who said the sale could still fall apart but hopes to have it done by the time the NASCAR owner agreement is signed in 2016, is planning to maintain a presence in motorsports. For example, he is in talks with Iowa Speedway executives about possibly buying race title sponsorships or hospitality packages there because many of his company's locations are in that state or nearby South Dakota. In the meantime, he is trying to help BK Racing accomplish a spate of business-side goals - including finding a company that wants to take over naming rights of the team.(Sports Business Daily)(12-3-2015)
Moffitt, DiBenedetto battle for NASCAR Cup rookie honors: Neither of the leading NASCAR Rookie of the Year candidates thought they'd be competing for the title when the season began. Both #34-Brett Moffitt and #83-Matt DiBenedetto were late arrivals to the Sunoco-sponsored program, but find themselves 1-2 in the complicated rookie points standings with two races remaining. "My first few races, I wasn't even signed up for it and didn't pay much attention to it," Moffitt said. "But later in the year, these last few races I've been asking them on the radio toward the end of the race: 'All right, where's the 23 (Jeb Burton) and 83 (DiBenedetto)?' We might not have the best day, but if we can beat them, it's kind of icing on the cake."
Rookie points are mostly based on finishes in comparison to the other rookies over their best 17 races, with bonus points for things like top-10 results. But points don't decide the title; they're just a guide for a panel made up of mostly NASCAR executives who will determine the winner next week at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
DiBenedetto had no clue 2015 would turn out to be his rookie season, either. A former development driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, DiBenedetto started the season at BK Racing with a last-minute deal thrown together just to get the #83 car to the track. "We weren't planning on running full-time, so I missed a lot of races and we had some good finishes that didn't count," he told USA TODAY Sports. "If we would have entered (at the start), it should have been a walk in the park. But obviously, I'm just thankful I got to run full time."(in part from the USA Today), see Rookie standings, race-by-race results and history on the 2015 Rookie of the Year Standings page.(11-15-2015)
NASCAR warnings from Texas issued: NASCAR issued written warnings to five teams from last weekend's Sprint Cup inspections at Texas. #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. lost his pit stall selection for Sunday's AAA Texas 500 because of the warning for failing the laser inspection twice in prequalifying inspection. Since NASCAR revamped its warning system in August, a fourth cumulative warning results in loss of pit selection. Earnhardt's cumulative warnings total has been reset to zero after the penalty.
The teams of #23-Jeb Burton (failing prerace laser inspection twice), #32-Joey Gase (failing prequalifying laser inspection three times), #95-Michael McDowell (failing prequalifying laser inspection twice) and #98-Ryan Preece (failing prequalifying laser inspection four times) also received warnings. The teams of Gase and Preece will be held out of practice for 15 minutes at Phoenix. There were no problems discovered with the cars taken to the R&D Center after Sunday's race (race winner #48-Jimmie Johnson, runner-up #2-Brad Keselowski, #3-Austin Dillon).(NBC Sports)(11-11-2015)
Jeb Burton unsure of 2016 plans: #23-Jeb Burton is unsure if he will be returning to BK Racing in 2016. "I'm not sure what my future holds right now, to tell you the truth," he said. "Hopefully, I'll be in a race car somewhere." Whether it's a ride in the Sprint Cup Series, Xfinity Series or Camping World Truck Series, Burton will consider rides in any of the top-three series. "I'm open to anything, whatever comes my way," he said. "I'll see what the best opportunity is and go do it."(Racing Experts)(10-22-2015)

Teams penalized practice time at Chicago: The BK Racing team with driver #23-Jeb Burton will be docked 30 minutes of practice time Friday at Chicagoland Speedway for being late to qualifying and race inspection last weekend at Richmond International Raceway, NASCAR confirmed Tuesday night. NASCAR typically docks a team 15 minutes of practice time for being late to inspection. That penalty was doubled for BK Racing because the #23 team was late to two inspections. Three other teams - the #7 of Alex Bowman, the #26 of J.J. Yeley and the #95 of Michael McDowell - will be docked 15 minutes of practice time Friday for being late to qualifying inspection at Richmond.(NBC Sports)(9-16-2015)

Jeb Burton's throwback to honor father Ward at Darlington: When Jeb Burton decided to join the wave of throwback paint schemes for Labor Day weekend at Darlington Raceway, he didn't have far to look for inspiration. Burton's BK Racing entry for the 66th running of the Bojangles' Southern 500 will pay tribute to the career of his father, Ward Burton, a two-time winner at NASCAR's oldest superspeedway. "I saw all the throwback stuff and Estes has the same colors as Dad had, so I just thought about the idea and I got the PR team to come up with a design," Jeb Burton said. "I saw it and I thought it'd be a cool idea so we went on with it." Ward Burton caught his first glimpse of the car's vintage look ahead of last weekend's race at Bristol Motor Speedway. The resemblance -- both in colors and its similarly styled numbers -- is uncanny. "It's really cool," the 53-year-old Burton said. "We had a lot of success at Darlington, but more importantly I really appreciate Jeb thinking about me." Ward Burton flew the Caterpillar flag for his most prominent wins in NASCAR's premier series, foremost among them the 2002 Daytona 500. The yellow-and-black look was also front and center for Burton and crew chief Tommy Baldwin Jr. when the Davis-owned team found a sweet spot at Darlington, yielding two victories at the 1.366-mile track, including the 2001 Southern 500.(NASCAR.com), see an image of the car on the #23 team paint schemes page.(8-26-2015)
Yeley-Burton switch rides at BK Racing? UPDATE: YES: hearing that JJ Yeley will now be the driver of the #26 Toyota for BK Racing and rookie Jeb Burton will move to BK Racing's #23 Toyota. The #26 is 44th in owners points, the #23 is 39th. The hope supposedly is that Yeley will be able to better qualify the #26 in on speed and give the rookie Burton a fall back on owners points. Hearing the change will take place for Darlington and stay thru the end of the season. No word if this includes crew chiefs changing. Joe Williams is the crew chief of the #23 and Patrick Donahue is the #26 crew chief.(8-24-2015)
UPDATE: Effective Darlington Raceway weekend, Jeb Burton will be piloting the #23 Toyota with Joe Williams as Crew Chief and JJ Yeley the #26 Toyota with Patrick Donahue as Crew Chief for the remainder of the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Season. We are confident and proud of our drivers and employees, but we are looking to try some different combinations to improve our results."(BK Racing)(8-25-2015)
Yeley dons Elvis outfit for driver intros at Bristol: #23-JJ Yeley doesn't often stand out much on the track once the racing begins and Saturday was no different as he placed 34th in the IRWIN Tools Night Race. No one, though, does driver intros at Bristol Motor Speedway with the gusto of the driver of the #23 car. Choosing a rocker theme for the second straight Night Race with help once again from his daughter, Yeley walked on to the track dressed as Elvis Presley with his daughter in an angel's outfit as "Devil in Disguise" blared over the loudspeakers. "Are you ready Briiiistol?" bellowed Yeley's daughter to loud cheers.(Bristol Herald Courier)(8-23-2015)

BK Racing, Tommy Baldwin Racing considering merger? UPDATE: Chatter in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage this weekend has a potential merger between BK Racing and Tommy Baldwin Racing being considered, CATCHFENCE.com has learned. Both teams have struggled thus far at NASCAR's top level this season, but the merger would combine resources, assets and personnel with hopes of lifting the on-track performance of their drivers. Another possible scenario is BK Racing simply acquiring Tommy Baldwin Racing, sources say. Currently, Tommy Baldwin Racing fields the #7 Chevy for Alex Bowman, while BK Racing fields three cars for rookie candidate Jeb Burton, Matt DiBenedetto and veteran JJ Yeley. Bowman drove for BK Racing in 2014, but left the team to join TBR. Sources tell CATCHFENCE.com if the merger happened, it's likely that Baldwin's team would switch to Toyota and Baldwin taking a director of competition role. A spokesperson for RAB Racing, which currently does not field a full-time team, confirmed that they were involved in an initial discussion with BK Racing, but wouldn't elaborate.(Catchfence)(4-26-2015)
UPDATE: been told this was discussed but no merger will happen.(5-10-2015)

Bowman apologizes to Danica: #23-Alex Bowman apologized to #10-Danica Patrick for wrecking her during Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway but understands that "Danica Nation is probably going to hate me now.'' Bowman got into the back of Patrick and caused her to spin on Lap 263. Although she didn't hit the wall, she lost two laps. It was part of a rough night for Patrick, who battled an ill-handling car and finished 27th. Bowman said he tried to avoid Patrick but couldn't. "It looked like somebody slid up a couple of cars in front of her and they all checked up,'' said Bowman, who finished 32nd. " I was just too deep not to run into her. I was on the brakes as hard as I could. I went over and talked to her (after the race). Definitely didn't mean to wreck her. Hate that Danica Nation is probably going to hate me now. It was unintentional. I hope she knows that. There was no reason to wreck her. We weren't even on the same lap. I apologized.''
Later in the race, Patrick ran up on Bowman and expressed her displeasure at the time. Afterward, Patrick was ready to move on. "I think were fine,'' she said. "He's just got to know that when you do that and you don't leave room for error and you hit me and take me out, I'm right there. As soon as I find you again I'm going to let you know I'm not happy. We're fine. If he does it again, worse things will happen. That's all.''(Motor Racing Network)(8-24-2014)

Swan Racing Restructures UPDATE Yeley in for Kligerman: Swan Racing announced it has successfully restructured the company by finding solutions for the #26 and #30 teams in an attempt to save the jobs of the crews, the drivers, and to keep those teams competing throughout the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. As a result, Anthony Marlowe has merged his ownership of the #26 team into BK Racing, effective immediately. Cole Whitt will remain behind the wheel of the #26. The #30 team has been sold to John Cohen of XxxTreme Motorsports, which will operate the team going forward and intends to compete with veteran driver J.J. Yeley. Stephen "Bones" Lane will serve as crew chief and be joined by several other former Swan Racing crewmembers. Driver Parker Kligerman remains under contract with Swan Racing, which will seek to identify options for him to get back on track. Team owner Brandon Davis issued the following statement:
"I want to first thank our employees, fans, and others in the NASCAR industry for their patience and understanding over the past several days while we work out the future of Swan Racing. As previously stated, the team is restructuring due to a lack of additional funding. However, over the past couple weeks we worked tirelessly to find an alternative to ending operations. Fortunately, we were able to find a home for the #26 team and the #30 team thanks to Anthony Marlowe and Jonathan Cohen respectively. "Anthony and Jonathan are both young and ambitious NASCAR enthusiasts. It is important to keep them in the sport for the long term. I am very relieved to know that the #26 and #30 teams will be in good hands and will continue to compete the remainder of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Most importantly, most of the team members have the opportunity to continue their employment in the sport and to support their families. This was critically important to me. Swan Racing is exploring any and all options to keep Parker Kligerman on track throughout the season. We are encouraged by the response we have received from interested parties. Parker continues to be one of the most talented young drivers in NASCAR. He brought this racing team one of its strongest results in his first race with us, and we are certain of his success in the future.(Swan Racing PR)(4-23-2014)
UPDATE: "It went from a lot of fun to a nightmare in a matter of months," [Swan Racing owner] Brandon Davis told NASCAR.com by telephone Wednesday, after his race team farmed off both its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars to other organizations. "I'm not going to point my finger in any one direction. It was just the overall thing, probably adding two cars, etc. ... There were challenges there." Davis, whose Swan Energy oil and gas company has bankrolled the team for most of its brief existence. Davis was willing to dig into his pockets to get the team going last year, when it fielded one car. But he expanded to two entries for 2014 and had hoped to subsist on sponsorship dollars, and the pieces simply didn't come together in time to keep the organization operational. Combine that with the time demands of Davis' growing oil and gas businesses, and it added up to difficulty from the first weeks of the season. Davis added he's retained a few people to help "wind things down" with Swan Racing, and can't foresee the team returning to the track in any capacity in the immediate future. Although Swan lacked sufficient sponsorship dollars, money wasn't the only issue -- expansion to two cars took more of a toll than Davis expected, and the demands of his day job cut into the available time he had to help the race team grow. With two cars now in the stable, everything took double the time, money, and effort. The financial amount contributed to the team by Swan Energy, Davis said, was used up in a matter of weeks. Asked if expanding to two cars proved too much, he did not mince words. "Yes. Most definitely."(NASCAR.com)
AND: Per Xxxtreme Motorsports Twitter, the team will run the #30 Chevy at Richmond, then switch back to the #44 starting at Talladega, and have the owners points / race attempts from the #30 team (4-24-2014).

Ryan Truex will shake down the #93 Toyota. Truex remains under contract with Richard Petty Motorsports but was given permission to test with BK Racing. "We're going to test those two to keep our options open," said Ron Devine, BKR team owner. On Sunday, Devine said both he and the team were impressed by Bowman's performance at the Charlotte test. He added BKR's driver lineup "is not set yet for 2014." Given the uncertainty surrounding his current drivers, that's understandable. Travis Kvapil, who competed in the #93 Toyota last year, has a pending court date Jan. 17 following charges of misdemeanor assault on Oct. 8. The case was continued from Nov. 19. Reutimann struggled to finish 33rd in the points standings last year. While Dale Ferguson will continue as the crew chief for the #93 team, Dave Winston [not Martin] will replace Doug Richert on the #83 squad. However, Devine says Richert will remain with the organization.(Fox Sports)(1-6-2014)

BK Racing gets new pit crew coach: BK Racing has decided to move in another direction with their pit crew coach and over the off season they hired long time Cup coach Gary Smith to run their program. Last year Gary worked with the Front Row Motorsports group and has spent many years before that as a coach and Crewmen. Gary brings years of experience to the team and sees an opportunity to improve at BK. "I've had the opportunity to work with Mike Ford before and we work well together. Rick Carpenter and the owners are dedicated to winning and that excited me about the future and building a good pit crew to help with the performance of the teams." Pit crews are generating a lot more attention due to the inability to pass on the track. Everyone is looking to make their teams better and adding Gary Smith to the BK line up is a good start. Gary will inherited a team from last year with very few returning starters and expects to build a team they can build on.(Pit Talks)(12-27-2013)
