Richard Childress Racing Adds New Operations Director: Sammy Johns has joined Richard Childress Racing (RCR) as the new operations director for the Welcome, North Carolina, racing organization. Johns will report directly to Dr. Eric Warren, director of competition for RCR. "I have known and worked closely with Sammy since 2001 in a variety of teams and roles," said Warren. "He is well rounded and understands the sport from multiple perspectives. He has the hands-on experience of a crew chief along with the understanding of what it takes to build a modern, technical racing organization capable of winning races in today's competitive environment."
Johns will take on an integral role at RCR managing and coordinating the manufacturing and car assembly processes, along with overseeing the crew chiefs and general execution of the race teams. RCR's Technical Director, Mike Coughlan, will continue to focus the engineering department on improving the performance of the cars and the ability to create and use data for a competitive advantage. The Lakeland, Florida, native began his racing career at local short tracks before being named crew chief at Andy Petree Racing. From there, Johns shifted gears and joined Evernham Motorsports as director of competition. He remained a permanent fixture within the organization through 2009 when the company officially became Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM). Johns transitioned into a new role of vice president of operations with RPM and resumed his title until earlier this year.

NASCAR to examine issues from Texas: NASCAR will investigate two incidents from this weekend's activities at Texas Motor Speedway - one which sidelined Matt DiBenedetto, a second that sent a crewman to the infield care center. DiBenedetto, 25, suffered a mild concussion while driving the #14 Toyota for Mark Smith in Saturday's Xfinity Series race. DiBenedetto was not cleared to compete for BK Racing in Sunday's AAA Texas 500. Appearing on SiriusXM Radio on Monday, NASCAR Executive Vice President Steve O'Donnell said while it was unfortunate that DiBenedetto was unable to race on Sunday, safety comes first. "We rely on outside experts to make that call," O'Donnell said. "In this case, Matt was diagnosed with a concussion. So, the road back for him would be to see a board-certified neurologist. I believe he's planning on doing that today. If he's cleared, he'd be back in the car as early as this weekend at Phoenix, which is what we're all hoping for - to see him out there racing. When it comes to concussion protocol, O'Donnell said there is not one specific process used to diagnose all drivers.
Mason Jennings, tire specialist for Paul Menard, had ringing in his ears following an inner liner explosion on the #27 Richard Childress Racing Chevy. Menard came in for service after he spun in Turn 4 on Lap 143 and flat-spotted his tires. "We will work with Goodyear," O'Donnell said. "We've got a lot of that we'll take back to the R&D Center and continue to look at what, if any, findings can come of that. We will obviously talk to everyone that was involved. Now we really have to take a deeper dive and look further at the tire and see how that gets prevented moving forward...We have our safety experts that will look at this and also look at the competitive aspect to see if there was anything different with this tire. Menard crew member ok after pit incident: Mason Jennings, a tire specialist on the #27 of Paul Menard, was unharmed and had ringing in his ears after a tire appeared to explode during a Menard pit stop in the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. But according to a Goodyear tire official, the tire did not explode. The accident was a "fluke," a result of the tire's inner liner slipping completely off the wheel. Menard was in the pits after spinning in Turns 3 and 4 on Lap 143. "When a car spins it generally flat spots the tires, which is exactly what happened here," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of race tire sales. "It flat spotted both front (tires). The damage that was done to the left front as he drove around the race track looked like it partially unseated the inner liner. So it was actually the inner liner that let go on pit road. It wasn't the tire itself. The tire was already down." Jennings was taken to the infield medical center but released.(NBC Sports)(11-7-2016)
Matt Borland getting back to NASCAR as crew chief UPDATE: Matt Borland is getting back in the NASCAR game. Sources told Motorsport.com that Borland will join Richard Childress Racing. Borland, 45, worked as a crew chief for 10 seasons in NASCAR before he was promoted to Vice President of Competition for Stewart Haas Racing. Borland rose up the ranks with rookie Ryan Newman for one race in 2000 through the A-B-C development program established at Penske. After a brief stint with Michael Waltrip Racing and Dale Jarrett to start the 2007 season, Borland joined Haas CNC Racing as director of competition and remained through the transition to SHR in 2012. Newman moved to RCR for the 2014 season and signed a contract extension last month. UPDATE: Richard Childress Racing has named Matt Borland as crew chief for its #27 Menards NASCAR Sprint Cup Series program. Borland will begin his duties as crew chief at the conclusion of the 2016 season, replacing interim crew chief Danny Stockman. Stockman will return to RCR's NASCAR XFINITY Series program, where he has won seven races and the 2013 Series championship. Borland, a seasoned NASCAR engineer and crew chief, brings to RCR more than 20 years of motorsports experience. Menard "pretty close" to announcing new deal with RCR UPDATE: Paul Menard is in his sixth season campaigning in the #27 Menard's Chevy. His sole Cup win with the organization came in the 2011 Brickyard 400. When asked about the status of his contract with RCR after finishing second in Saturday's Zippo 200 at the Glen, he said that they are "pretty close" to an extension. UPDATE: Roger Penske has sponsorship locked down for three of his IndyCar teams next season, with Menards signing on for 10 races with Simon Pagenaud to drive the bright yellow colors of the home improvement store. The announcement Saturday returns John Menard to a high-profile role in IndyCar after a long absence. The billionaire was a team owner and sponsor in the series but walked away after the 2004 season to back his son, Paul, in NASCAR. Menard made a slow return to Indy this year as a sponsor for Pagenaud in the 100th Indianapolis 500, and that deal grew to cover five races. Childress close to finalizing 2017 plans UPDATES: Car owner Richard Childress anticipates he'll know his 2017 driver lineup within three weeks. While Childress told NBC Sports on Thursday that "we've still got a couple of months before we make any real decisions," he did say that "we'll kind of know in the next two or three weeks. We'll have a direction." The main question for the three-car organization is #31-Ryan Newman's status. He's in the final year of his contract, and Childress' grandson, Ty Dillon, appears set to move to Sprint Cup next season. The team also includes #27-Paul Menard, who is 23rd in the points. Childress said Menard's is expected to return to the team as sponsor next year. The final member of the team is #3-Austin Dillon, who is 13th in points and seeking to make the playoffs for the first time.
Ty Dillon has driven eight Sprint Cup races this season. He drove three races for Tony Stewart early in the season and has run five races for Circle Sport - Leavine Family Racing. "I think he'll be in a Cup car next year," Childress said of Ty Dillon. "I'm pretty sure he'll be in a Cup car. We're working on some different programs. Hell, he may be with us, who knows? We're just working on a lot of different things. Right now it's just a lot of things are hanging. UPDATE Richard Childress Racing is expected to announce its 2017 Sprint Cup Series driver lineup in the coming weeks. Ryan Newman, in his third season as driver of the #31 RCR Chevrolet, isn't quite sure if he'll be a part of it. "We haven't talked about it in-depth yet, but we have talked about it," Newman, 13th in points, said Thursday at Kalahari Resort in Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania. "Hopefully, we'll get to sit down and talk about it soon." While Newman offers consistent, above-average production week in and week out, RCR may be faced with a tough decision as Childress' grandson, Ty Dillon, appears ready for a full-time Sprint Cup Series ride with no clear path to a spot for him. Still, the team owner told NASCAR.com earlier this year at Michigan International Speedway that he's planning on having the '16 XFINITY Series title hopeful in a Sprint Cup car full-time in 2017, while the exact organization and ride has yet to be finalized. Right now, Newman doesn't appear to be getting his ducks in order just yet on the off chance he finds himself ousted from his ride in favor of the younger Dillon. "I plan on (coming back)," he said. AND: The team is a question mark, the number is uncertain and the logistics are still behind closed doors. But one thing's for certain: If he has his way, Ty Dillon will be in a Sprint Cup Series ride next season. "I fully plan on being in the Sprint Cup Series next year full time," Dillon said Friday at Iowa Speedway. "We've got a lot of options on the table. A lot of chips still left to fall before we kind of get to that point, but hopefully we'll have something really close to getting done in a month or so." With #31 driver Ryan Newman's RCR contract up after this season, it looks to be seen whether or not Dillon will take his place as the driver of the team's third car or if organization will add a fourth car. The possibility of driving for a different team also looms. "Talks have progressed a lot further than they have in past years," Dillon said. "I had talks with other teams in the past couple years and had opportunities, but it's always been my dream to drive for RCR and be teammates with my brother. Menard's Darlington throwback scheme unveiled: Paul Menard's Richard Childress Racing #27 Chevy will carry the gray, orange and black color scheme used by Al Unser Jr. for the 1993 Daytona 500 with sponsor Valvoline featured on the hood when the series travels to Darlington Raceway for the annual Labor Day weekend classic.
"Little Al's first NASCAR race was the Daytona 500 in 1993," Menard said earlier this week as preparations for the unveiling of the paint scheme got underway. "The partnership with Valvoline this year -- we got to talking earlier about who some of my racing heroes were and Al Jr. was right away, even without the Valvoline relationship. I've always been a huge fan of his. He was the guy in IndyCar that I always pulled for." Menard said he met the former open-wheel champion and two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 "when I was probably 12."
"I remember; he probably doesn't," Menard continued. "But I pulled up (this morning) ... and he was standing out in the parking lot. We were out there talking probably 10 or 15 minutes, just about the '93 (Daytona) 500, his autocross stuff that he's doing now, just talking about a little bit of racing." Stockman replaces Alexander as Menard's crew chief: Richard Childress Racing has made a change in crew chiefs for its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR XFINITY Series programs, effective immediately. Danny Stockman, a two-time champion in the NASCAR XFINITY and Camping World Truck Series, will assume crew chief responsibilities for the #27 Menards Chevrolet SS team, with driver Paul Menard. Stockman's first race with the team will be at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, July 31. During Stockman's seven-year tenure with RCR, he has captured two championships and nine wins between the NASCAR XFINITY and Camping World Truck Series. The Yucaipa, Calif., native joins the #27 program already familiar with Menard, having worked with the veteran driver for the past two years in the XFINITY Series. Together, they produced a race win at Road America in 2015. Menard, who earned a spot in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase in 2015, is currently 23rd in the championship point standings. Richard Childress Racing announces promotion, new staff: Richard Childress Racing has promoted Jeremy Burleson to the newly created position of Vice President, Partnership Marketing and Communications and has added Carl Anderson and Jay Pennell to the team. Burleson, a Locust, N.C., native joined RCR in 2008 as partnership marketing manager. Since that time, his role has grown to include overseeing a staff of 12 marketing and communications professionals as the Managing Director of Marketing/Communications. In addition to Burleson's enhanced role, RCR has enriched the front office staff with the addition of Carl Anderson to the Business Development team and Jay Pennell to the Communications team.
Anderson joins RCR with an impressive academic background and sales experience. He previously served as a Corporate Sponsorship Account Executive at IMG College in Huntington, W.Va and also has group sales experience with the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team.
Pennell joins RCR with significant experience and knowledge in the digital media and content arenas, which he will be utilizing to help produce and generate original content for RCR's digital space. Menards sponsoring Penske in Indy 500: Team Penske announced that Menards, the industry-leading home improvement store company with locations throughout the Midwest, will sponsor the #22 car and driver Simon Pagenaud for two races during the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series, including this year's 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 29th. Menards will adorn the side of the #22 Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet both at the Indy 500 as well as the series' return to Road America in June. The company will also be an associate sponsor on the #22 Team Penske car for the balance of the 2016 season. The announcement marks a return for Menards to the Verizon IndyCar Series. RCR cars have parts impounded: Richard Childress Racing's three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars had trouble in pre-race inspection Sunday. After multiple trips through the line, NASCAR pulled the #3 of Austin Dillon, #27 of Paul Menard and #31 of Ryan Newman out of inspection and confiscated the braces in the right rear corners of their respective vehicles. According to NASCAR, the parts in question were optional braces (brackets) in the rear-wheel area of the cars. Former RCR Team Pilot Killed in Crash: A pilot died Thursday night after his plane crashed in a wooded area in Union County, authorities said. Officials identified the pilot as Jim Cook, 68, of Lexington, NC. Cook reported engine problems before the plane went down. Investigators said he was the only person on board. Cook was a long time pilot for Richard Childress Racing. He retired from the race team and was working part-time for various corporate customers.(WSCO)(2-19-2016)
Motorsports Hall of Fame of America 28th class of inductees: The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHFA) announced its 28th class of inductees at Daytona International Speedway, continuing a long-standing tradition of honoring legendary figures from a wide variety of racing disciplines.
The seven-person class of 2016 inductees: Everett Brashear, Richard Childress, Gary Gabelich, Chip Ganassi, Dave McClelland, Sam Posey and Bob Sweikert. Collectively, the illustrious group represents motorcycles, stock cars, sports cars, land speed records, drag boat records, drag racing and open-wheel racing. They will be enshrined at the 28th Annual Induction Ceremony presented by Bridgestone on the evening of June 29 at Daytona International Speedway, the new home of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Friday's announcement was made in the Daytona International Speedway media center as part of the Rolex 24 At Daytona weekend, with domestic and international media in attendance. New pit crew coach at RCR: Eric Wilson has stepped down as head coach of Richard Childress Racing's pit crews effective immediately. Wilson took over the coaching job 3 years ago when Matt Clark was released. Wilson's plans are unclear to us at this time but what is clear is that Ray Wright will be taking over. Wright has been the strength and conditioning coach for the last 7 years and will now transition to the coaching role. Ray was also the rear tire carrier for the #27 of Paul Menard. Taking his place over the wall will be Adam Mestenmacher. As far as the strength condition role goes, we are hearing that Tyler Radar will be taking over the void for the foreseeable future. Spotter change for Menard:
Billy O'Dea is taking over spotting duties for the #27 Menard's Chevy and driver Paul Menard effective immediately. The veteran spotter has worked at Richard Childress Racing for 18 seasons, most recently with Ty Dillon. He was Kevin Harvick's spotter for nine years before the driver moved to Stewart-Haas Racing. O'Dea will continue with Dillon in the Xfinity Series races, except when there's a schedule conflict. O'Dea replaces Stevie Reeves, who has been with Menard for nine seasons. Prior to Menard, Reeves spotted on the #48 with Jimmie Johnson. "It was going to happen," Reeves said. "It was time for us to do something different. RCR adding to engineering department: When Martin Truex Jr. won at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, he didn't get to Victory Lane alone. Certainly, there was the unwavering investment of time and effort of his Furniture Row Racing team. But the engine and the chassis underneath Truex came from a technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing. JTG Daugherty Racing, Germain Racing and Circle Sport Racing also enjoys similar relationship the Welcome, N.C.-based race shop which has increased technological investment considerably over last year. RCR's Competition Director Dr. Eric Warren wasn't kidding when he referred to RCR's engineering department as the United Nations. In 2015, RCR has bolstered its resources with talent from all over the globe but primarily Formula One.
In January, Amro Karim, Miguel Botella, Travis Slagle, Richard Youden and Ben Siegle were added to RCR's engineering department. Karim most recently was a Vehicle Performance Engineer with Marussia F1 but also worked as a F1 Project Engineer for Wirth Research. Bottella was a Software Engineer at both Caterham F1 and HRT F1 Team. Younden was as an Electronics & Control Systems Engineer at Williams F1. Previously, he worked as an Applications Engineer at Racelogic, an Electronics Design Engineer at Hasford Sensors and a Systems Engineer at Honda Racing F1 and Stack Ltd. Slagle advanced from a Systems Engineer at Moog to Systems Development Lead prior to joining RCR. Robin Johnson named VP of Business Development for RCR: Richard Childress Racing has named Robin Johnson as its new Vice President of Business Development to oversee sponsorship sales and partnership expansion, effective immediately. Johnson brings more than 20 years of combined legal and business development leadership to the multi-championship NASCAR team. He most recently served as the General Counsel for the S.C. State Treasurer's Office. Prior to that position, the South Carolina native served in similar business development roles at Front Row Motorsports and Roush Fenway Racing, where he helped build what was arguably one of the most respected sponsorship bases in professional sports during his tenure. Johnson is an honor graduate of The Citadel (class of 1986) earning his B.S. degree in business administration. He is also an honor graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law and is licensed in South Carolina and New York. RCR implementing safety changes for its pit crews: Richard Childress Racing is requiring all its over-the-wall pit crew members to wear fire-protective head socks and is looking at potential changes to both helmets and eyewear after pit fires at Richmond International Raceway and Talladega Superspeedway, the team confirmed to NASCAR Talk. Two crew members from Brendan Gaughan's Xfinity team were injured in a pit fire April 24 at Richmond. A small fire broke out during one of Ryan Newman's pit stops in last weekend's Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway. No one was injured. An RCR spokesperson emailed a statement to NASCAR Talk about the team's plans for its pit crews.
"RCR has always preached safety with our crew members and after the Richmond pit road incident, we reviewed our internal policies and procedures to determine what further changes were warranted," team spokesperson Tim Packman wrote in an email. "From that, we were able to make necessary changes to help prevent that from happening again as we had a mechanical failure on one of the gas cans at Richmond, which led to the large amount of fuel being spilled. This was not related to the #31 incident at Talladega. As of right now, we are requiring all over-the-wall crew members to wear full head socks. We are also looking at potential changes to both helmets and eyewear, but those discussions are ongoing. Some of the crew members were already using full helmets this past weekend."
