"We're proud to be part of such a unique promotion that helps connect fans to the history of NASCAR," said Toy State President, Andy Friess. "It's a privilege to recognize Alan Kulwicki as a champion, and as a man admired by so many, both inside and outside of the sport."
"It's an honor for us to pay tribute to a true champion of our sport," said team owner Tommy Baldwin. "Sharing the car number is a great way to celebrate his accomplishments, it is even more special because Alan achieved success as an independent team. "We appreciate what Alex contributed during 2015 and wish him the best in the future." During this past season, Bowman qualified for 35 of 36 championship points events. His start/finish average was 34th and 31st respectively and placed 33rd in the final standings.(140Buzz/TBR)(1-21-2016)
UPDATE: Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR) announces Regan Smith as driver of the #7 Chevy in 2016. As previously announced, Toy State and their Nikko RC and Road Rippers brands will serve as the majority sponsor for the season. "This is a really great time for us," said team owner, Tommy Baldwin. "Having a driver with Regan's credentials further elevates our program. He's a seasoned driver and a proven race winner. We're really looking forward to 2016." A native of Cato, NY, Smith is equally as eager to get the season started. "This has been a crazy few days, but I'm really excited that we were able to put this together," he said. "I have a ton of respect for Tommy and what he's built there. It's going to be a lot of fun. Our son Rhett turns one next month, so I'll be putting in my request for some Road Rippers cars. That's a pretty good perk too!" Smith's career in NASCAR boasts a total of 7 wins, 34 top-five's and 94 top-ten's across the three National Touring Series, including the storied Southern 500 at Darlington in 2011.(TBR)(1-21-2016)
UPDATE2: Statement from Tommy Baldwin Racing concerning the recent driver change: "The business of NASCAR is no different than any other professional sport. There are a lot of moving parts and pieces behind the scenes that fans and media don't see. Decisions are made carefully over a period of time and are influenced by many factors. As the competition and business models change in NASCAR, it's the responsibility of teams to make decisions accordingly. We felt that we needed to make some changes, and the driver was one of them. The circumstances surrounding Alex's release via social media was unfortunate and certainly unintentional. The culture of doing business in motorsports has become more complex and involves many parties such as agents, business managers, attorneys and sponsors. A comment in passing may be overheard and subsequently conveyed to the media. Our intention, as it always is, was to follow business protocol and notify Alex and his management of our decision. Again, it's unfortunate that confidentiality was compromised, and the news delivered in this manner. Alex Bowman is a talented, young race car driver. He has a good future ahead of him. We appreciate his time with us and wish him well.(TBR Facebook page)(1-23-2016)
Tommy Baldwin Racing Restructures Team: Tommy Baldwin Racing announced major changes within the organization for 2016. Francois "Frankie" Bergeron comes over from Joe Gibbs Racing where, as Fabrication Shop Manager, he oversaw the complete building of their cars for the past five years. Now, he'll take his seasoned experience to TBR where he will assume the same role. "Frankie brings with him a resume full of race wins and experience," said team owner, Tommy Baldwin. "His knowledge and leadership will be an invaluable asset to our program. We're excited to have him join us."
Chad Walters, who worked at Michael Waltrip Racing for the past three years, will lead the race engineering efforts. At MWR, he served as an engineer and R&D Manager. Walters will flank Ed Nathman, who has assumed the role of Simulation and Vehicle Dynamics Manager. Veteran Mike Brill joins TBR as Car Chief of the #7 Chevy driven by Alex Bowman. Most recently at Richard Childress Racing, Brill has been a fixture in the NASCAR garage for many years. He takes over for Ken Davis, who's focus will be at the shop as a chassis specialist and mechanic.
The newly revamped body-building shop will benefit from the addition of two former MWR employees. Both Doug Trader and Brent Patzack bring a wealth of experience to TBR and will complement the existing staff. Additionally, longtime TBR team member, Jamie Tomaino, has been promoted to Shop Foreman. "This is probably the most excited about a season than we've ever been," said Baldwin. "I feel that we've put together a team capable of bringing us to the next level of competition. This business is all about the people and I think we've assembled some of the best." Founded in 2009, Tommy Baldwin Racing is a NASCAR organization that fields the #7 Chevy driven by Alex Bowman in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Baldwin, a native of Long Island, New York, is a Daytona 500-winning crew chief in his seventh season as a full-time Cup Series car owner.(Tommy Baldwin Racing)(12-21-2015)
Tommy Baldwin Racing announces sponsorship deal UPDATE: Toy State has renewed with Tommy Baldwin Racing for a multi-year sponsorship deal. No word on number or races or length of the deal. Toy State was the primary sponsor on the #7 Chevy and driver Alex Bowman for ten races in 2016.(Tommy Baldwin Racing Facebook / Twitter)(12-15-2015)
UPDATE: Tommy Baldwin Racing and Toy State have announced a multi-year sponsorship agreement for the #7 Chevy driven by Alex Bowman. Toy State sponsored Bowman for nine races this past year (was on the car for the Daytona 500 which the team failed to qualify for), and will be stepping up to 13 Sprint Cup Series races in 2016 and 17 in 2017. TBR is entering its eighth year, but it's the first off-season where the team can concentrate on the upcoming season with sponsorship secured. "It's a nice way to start the new year," Baldwin said, "to have a company like Toy State with all its different brands of toys and Nikko radio-controlled cars." Throughout the season, Bowman's #7 entry will feature many paint schemes closer to what the consumer will actually see in the toy lines. During the announcement, which was held at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the team unveiled one of the new paint schemes that resembles an RC shark monster truck in the product line. Last year, Bowman and the team participated in many events at hospitals to give toys away to kids and will continue that through this partnership. "It's great to be a part of this," Bowman said. "To have them on our car and to be able to put smiles on kids' faces everywhere we go has been really special." TBR will have an alliance with Richard Childress Racing and ECR engines for 2016. "We've hired a lot of good people to join the good people we already have for next year," Baldwin said. "We're rebuilding our whole fleet and updating to the latest, greatest thing that we need. It's an exciting time for me."(Motor Racing Network), see images of one of the schemes on the 2016 #7 team paint schemes page.(12-15-2015)
Toy State becomes NASCAR Licensee: Toy State, a toy industry leader and innovator of licensed and highly-stylized 'lights and sound' and radio-controlled toy vehicles, has entered into a global licensing agreement with NASCAR. The relationship will allow Toy State to introduce NASCAR-licensed products specially designed to connect with the next generation of NASCAR fans. With a portfolio that already includes licensing agreements with leading global properties including Caterpillar, Hot Wheels, DC Super Friends, Barbie and WWE, the addition of the NASCAR brand further strengthens this lineup and fortifies Toy State's motorsports program. This deal is the latest activation piece of Toy State's entry into motorsports after serving as a primary sponsor for Tommy Baldwin Racing's #7 Chevy during the 2015 season. While no plans have been announced concerning the company's sponsorship plans in 2016, this new licensing deal will allow Toy State to create 'lights and sound' and radio-controlled toy versions of on-track car replicas for distribution across a broad network of retail channels. Development is currently underway on the toy line.(Toy State)
AND While there may be no connection, Tommy Baldwin Racing has a sponsorship announcement scheduled for Tuesday morning.(12-15-2015)
Tommy Baldwin Racing Pays Tribute to "Tiger" Tom Baldwin: Tommy Baldwin Racing announced that the #7 Chevy will be a throwback to Baldwin's racing roots and honor the memory of his dad, the late "Tiger" Tom Baldwin. The car design, with driver Alex Bowman behind the wheel, replicates the NASCAR Modified #7NY that Tom raced successfully throughout the Northeast. "I'm grateful to Darlington Raceway and NASCAR for creating the 'throwback' theme," said Tommy Baldwin. "My dad had a great influence on my career, where I started working in his shop and later became his crew chief. That ultimately led to where I am today. Having the opportunity to pay tribute to him and say 'thank you' means a lot to me and my family."(Tommy Baldwin Racing), see an image of the car on the #7 team paint scheme page or see all the Bojangles' Southern 500 throwback schemes on the Darlington throwback schemes page.(9-2-2015)
Tommy Baldwin Racing re-signs Bowman UPDATE2: Tommy Baldwin Racing has exercised its option on Alex Bowman. Bowman, 22, joined TBR at the start of the 2015 season. The driver of the #7 Nikko/Golden Corral Chevy is one of NASCAR's rising stars. "Obviously, we have a lot of good things going on for the future," said team owner Tommy Baldwin Jr. "We picked up his option last week. We're real excited about what we have going on with TBR right now. We figured if we got Alex locked down and then we can work on all the necessary tools to keep climbing up the ladder."(Motorsport)(6-28-2015)
UPDATE: Tommy Baldwin Racing has exercised their option to keep Alex Bowman in the #7 Chevy for the 2016 season. "We've got some great things happening right now and the most important part of all our plans was signing Alex as early as possible," said team owner Tommy Baldwin. "Now we can continue to focus on the rest of the parts and pieces needed to continue our forward progress."
"I'm excited for all the things Tommy and the team have in the works and knowing that I will be a part of that for the next year is a good feeling," said Bowman. "This has been a good year for us and I am confident in what we can continue to do this season and next."(TBR)
AND the team will have Advance Auto Parts as the the sponsor on the #7 Chevy at Kentucky. See an images of the car on the #7 Team Schemes page.(7-1-2015)
UPDATE: Tommy Baldwin Racing's Alex Bowman will team with Advance Auto Parts and Quaker State for the upcoming Quaker State 400 presented by Advance Auto Parts race on July 11th at Kentucky Speedway. "We are proud to have Advance Auto Parts and Quaker State onboard for Kentucky," said team owner Tommy Baldwin. "It's a big race weekend for them as sponsors of the Quaker State 400 and we are proud to have them on the #7 car for the weekend."
"I am looking forward to having Advance Auto Parts on board at Kentucky," said Bowman. "The Kentucky race is always one of my favorites but having Advance Auto onboard with our No.7 Chevrolet is going to make this a great weekend." This is the third year that Advance Auto Parts has been a presenting sponsor of the Kentucky race. "We are extremely excited to support Sprint Cup racing in Kentucky, and to have the Advance colors on the #7 Chevy," said Advance Auto Parts SVP CMO Walter Scott.(TBR)(7-2-2015)
BK Racing, Tommy Baldwin Racing considering merger? UPDATE: Chatter in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garage this weekend has a potential merger between BK Racing and Tommy Baldwin Racing being considered, CATCHFENCE.com has learned. Both teams have struggled thus far at NASCAR's top level this season, but the merger would combine resources, assets and personnel with hopes of lifting the on-track performance of their drivers. Another possible scenario is BK Racing simply acquiring Tommy Baldwin Racing, sources say. Currently, Tommy Baldwin Racing fields the #7 Chevy for Alex Bowman, while BK Racing fields three cars for rookie candidate Jeb Burton, Matt DiBenedetto and veteran JJ Yeley. Bowman drove for BK Racing in 2014, but left the team to join TBR. Sources tell CATCHFENCE.com if the merger happened, it's likely that Baldwin's team would switch to Toyota and Baldwin taking a director of competition role. A spokesperson for RAB Racing, which currently does not field a full-time team, confirmed that they were involved in an initial discussion with BK Racing, but wouldn't elaborate.(Catchfence)(4-26-2015)
UPDATE: been told this was discussed but no merger will happen.(5-10-2015)
Bray Pemberton joins Tommy Baldwin Racing as General Manager and Chief Legal Counsel: Tommy Baldwin Racing announced the team has hired Bray Pemberton as General Manager and Chief Legal Counsel for the two car NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Team. Bray, 29, is a 2012 graduate from The University of South Carolina School of Law and became licensed in North Carolina to practice law in July 2012. Prior to joining TBR, Pemberton, whose family has a long history in the sport of NASCAR, was general manager at Swan Racing and spent a short time with Randy Humphrey Racing. "While I am grateful for all of the opportunities I have had with race teams in NASCAR, I can honestly say I've never been so excited about the possibilities I now have working along-side Tommy Baldwin," said Pemberton. "I have the utmost respect for what Tommy and Beth (Baldwin's wife) have done over the past few years in building this team, basically on their own. I see so many great opportunities to help continue to grow their dream and see TBR compete with the top teams in NASCAR," he added.(TBR)(1-9-2015)
