  • Dave Blaney believes he's done racing in NASCAR: Dave Blaney is content to take that next step in his racing career. And no, that doesn't mean retirement. It's back to dirt. Blaney returned to his roots a few years ago when he mixed in a few Sprint Car races with his NASCAR schedule. But it was only a handful of shows, and fans never knew when, where or if he was going to show up. This season, Blaney only competed in seven NASCAR events. That allowed the former World of Outlaws champion to run in the neighborhood of 25 shows east of the Mississippi. It looks like that commitment is going to increase in 2015. Blaney appears to be done with NASCAR and could increase his Sprint Car schedule to 50 or 60 shows depending on sponsorship and finances. "I don't plan on running any NASCAR at the moment," said Blaney, who is competing in this weekend's World of Outlaws World Finals in Charlotte. "I'm not in any position to get any kind of ride that is going to be competitive, but I will go to a lot of races to watch [my son] Ryan. So by no means will [sprint cars] be full time, but it could be a lot more than this year." Continued Blaney, "I could even see a 60-race schedule if things line up perfect. I could also see 15 as well, but we will see." Before Blaney embarked on a full-time NASCAR career in 2000, he was one of the best in the Sprint Car game. The competition mattered little. Blaney won 70 races with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series and a tour championship in 1995.(Patriot-News)(11-8-2014)

  • Corey LaJoie returns to the #77 with new sponsor: Essex Homes will sponsor the #77 Randy Humphrey Racing Ford when Corey LaJoie will attempt to make the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend.(Essex Homes Facebook), see images of the car on the #77 Team Schemes page. LaJoie, the son of two-time Nationwide Series Champ, Randy LaJoie, made his Sprint Cup Series debut at New Hampshire in the #77 on September 21, 2014, finishing 41st.(10-7-2014)

  • Corey LaJoie to make Cup debut at New Hampshire: Corey Lajoie will make his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut this weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for Randy Humphrey Racing. LaJoie's debut will come less than a week before his 23rd birthday. It marks the first time in a Cup car for the son of two-time Nationwide champions Randy LaJoie. With 43 cars entered at New Hampshire, Corey LaJoie is guaranteed a starting spot. LaJoie is a development driver for Richard Petty Motorsports but the team has not found sponsorship to run him. LaJoie has run one Nationwide race this season, placing 21st at Kentucky, and twice in the Camping World Truck Series, finishing 15th at Kentucky and 10th at Bristol. LaJoie is unsure of his plans beyond this week. If things go well, he could be in line for rides with Randy Humphrey Racing at Kansas, Charlotte and Texas. He's also looking for possible Nationwide rides at Kansas and Charlotte. "It does seem like some things are opening up," LaJoie said of other rides. "Maybe this RHR deal will grow up to something bigger. If I get a good solid run ... and bring it home in one piece who knows what will happen."(Motor Racing Network)(9-17-2017)

  • Piquet to make Cup debut at Watkins Glen UPDATE: Nelson Piquet Jr. is set to make his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut this weekend at Watkins Glen International, his first national series start of the season. Piquet, a Brazilian native, will drive the Randy Humphrey Racing #77 Ford in Sunday's Cheez-It 355 at The Glen. Since 43 cars are listed for the 43-car event, Piquet will not need to qualify based on his speed in Coors Light Pole Qualifying unless another team files a late entry. The 29-year-old driver competed in two full seasons in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series from 2011-12, then raced full-time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2013. This year, he's been competing in Rallycross events, including taking the bronze medal at the X-Games in June. Sunday's race also marks the return of the Randy Humphrey-owned organization to the Sprint Cup circuit.(NASCAR.com)(8-5-2014)
UPDATE: Randy Humphrey Racing announced that Nelson Piquet Jr., the first Brazilian to win in two of NASCAR's top-three national series, will pilot the #77 WORX Yard Tools Ford Fusion for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International this weekend. The Cheez-It 355 at The Glen marks the 29-year-old's first attempt to race in NASCAR's premier series. WORX Yard Tools is sponsoring the car, continuing their relationship with Piquet Jr. following his full-time campaign in the NASCAR Nationwide Series last season in the #30 car. Randy Humphrey Racing makes its return to Sprint Cup competition after a complete restructuring of the organization. The team will now be led by veteran crew chief Steven Lane. RHR intends to run at a competitive level for a limited remaining schedule in 2014.(Tuckahoe Strategies), see an image of the car on the #77 team paint schemes page.(8-5-2014)

  • #77 team "retooling": Randy Humphrey's race team won't be at Kentucky Speedway this weekend -- but that's not because the operation is shutting down. "We're retooling things," Humphrey said Tuesday by telephone. "We're just trying to find the right people. ... We have not shut down." The #77 car of Randy Humphrey Racing has competed in four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events this season, all with veteran driver Dave Blaney behind the wheel. The team had entered every race until this past weekend's event on the Sonoma Raceway road course, although it ultimately withdrew from the Daytona 500, the most recent oval race at Michigan International Speedway two weeks ago, and two other events earlier this year. Humphrey said the hiatus isn't due to funding -- the competition level of his #77 car simply wasn't what he had hoped. Humphrey said he hopes to return to the track for the July 27 Crown Royal Presents the John Walding 400 at The Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "You will not see us at Daytona (next weekend), but I do suspect you will be seeing us at Indy forward, hopefully," he said. "That's our plan. We have some meetings that are going on, and we're just interviewing some people. We had to retool some people and that kind of thing to get ourselves in order here."(NASCAR.com)(6-25-2014)

  • #77 gets new look for Pocono, images posted: Fochler Veterans Law / Valor 4 Vets decided to sponsor a NASCAR team to make Veterans aware that help is out there if they need it. It is a frustrating process to battle the VA for compensation and pension benefits and at Fochler Veterans Law, we can ease that burden and help Veterans get the benefits they have earned. Fochler Veterans Law will be sponsoring Dave Blaney in the #77 Ford this weekend at Pocono Raceway after being the sponsor at Charlotte in May. The #77 will have a new patriotic scheme at Pocono. See images of the scheme/car on the #77 Team Schemes page.(6-5-2014)

  • Blaney skips practice for HOF induction: Eighteen (18) current National Sprint Car Hall of Fame (NSCHoF) inductees have indicated that they will be in Knoxville this weekend for the twenty-fifth annual National Sprint Car Hall of Fame induction banquet, set for Saturday afternoon, May 31, at 12 Noon. They will be here to honor this year's inductees, Dave Argabright of Indiana, Dave Blaney of North Carolina, Bobby Davis, Jr., of Tennessee, Mark Kinser of Indiana, William "Windy" McDonald of Arizona, and Chuck Merrill of Illinois, all of whom have indicated that they will be at the banquet, too.(NSCHoF)(5-31-2014)

  • #77 Team Withdraws from Daytona 500: #77-Dave Blaney will not attempt to make the Daytona 500 as his Randy Humphrey Racing team had to withdraw after the Sprint Cup veteran got collected in the big crash Wednesday at Daytona International Speedway. The team did not have a backup car and could not secure one for the event.(Sporting News)(2-20-2014)

  • Dave Blaney Claims Sprint Car All Star Opener: After three straight rain-outs, the 2014 season for the University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions finally kicked off Sunday at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL. NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Dave Blaney - the Buckeye Bullet - put on a dominating performance early and then held off a charging Tim Shaffer to pick up his 46th career series win.(NSSN)(2-11-2014)

  • Dave Blaney to be inducted into National Sprint Car Hall of Fame: The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame announced the names of its eight inductees for 2014. The ceremony will be held in Knoxville, Iowa on May 31st. Sprint Cup Series driver, Dave Blaney, is one of the drivers that will be inducted.(National Sprint Car Hall of Fame)(1-15-2014)

  • Blaney may have Cup ride UPDATE: as far as Dave Blaney's 2014 plans, he's building a second sprint car and plans to do a lot more sprint car racing starting in Florida next month. He'll do some Sprint Cup racing as well for a new team. Dave Blaney won two sprint car races in the region last year including Port Royal Speedway's season opener and PA Sprint Speedweek at Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland (The News Item)(1-7-2014)
UPDATE: Dave Blaney is reviving the #77 Ford for Sprint Cup team owner Randy Humphrey. It's expected to be a full-time ride for 2014. Blaney also raced a #77 Ford for Jasper Racing in 2002-2003. Veteran crew chief Peter Sospenzo will oversee the operation. "We dealt with each other at Front Row (Motorsports)," Blaney told FOX Sports. "I always liked him, but we never raced together before. Obviously, it helps that we'll have Doug Yates engines and picked up some really nice cars that Casey Mears drove before Germain switched to Chevys. So we're off to. Good start."(FoxSports), Humphrey and Sospenzo ran the #19 Toyota with Mike Bliss doing most of the driving in 2013.(1-8-2014)

  • Kennedy could return to #19 team:
Is there a possibility of seeing Alex Kennedy run more Cup races this season?
"Possibly. You never know what can happen from this. I know Watkins Glen is still open for debate. I know you will see us in a couple more races, I'm sure. Whether they're Cup or Nationwide, we don't know yet. We'll have to play it by ear. We will look at the rest of the year after this event and this weekend."
Will Sunday's effort be a fully funded race, or will we see the #19 car pull off the track early?
"No, this Sunday's race will be a full-on, 100% effort. I wouldn't do my debut if it was going to be a start and park. We have a fully funded effort, a fully funded race car, and we are going to race it as hard as we have to."(Racing Experts)(6-22-2013)

  • Three drivers making Cup debut UPDATE: Three drivers will attempt to make their first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start on Sunday at Sonoma: #19-Alex Kennedy, #36-Victory Gonzalez Jr. and #52-Paulie Harraka. The last time three or more drivers made their debut in the same race was at Martinsville Speedway on Oct. 24, 2004 when Chad Chaffin, Mario Gosselin and Travis Kvapil all made their debut.(NASCAR)(6-20-2013)
UPDATE: Justin Marks will be driving the #7 for Tommy Baldwin and is also making his Sprint Cup debut.(6-20-2013)

  • Alex Kennedy making Sprint Cup debut: Alex Kennedy is attempting to make his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut at Sonoma Raceway this weekend driving for Humphrey Smith Racing, LLC (HSR). Kennedy, who is familiar with the 2.52-mile road course, will pilot the #19 MediaMaster/Dream Factory Toyota Camry. As an aspiring race car driver, Kennedy, then 12, competed in multiple Legends Car events at the hilly, 12-turn course. Known for its motto, "Think Outside the Oval", Sonoma Raceway is one of only two road courses on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. Kennedy brings NASCAR racing experience with him, having competed in 14 events in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, nine of which were on the road courses of Watkins Glen, Road America and Montreal. He earned his best finish of 15th last year at Montreal. Kennedy will pilot HSR's chassis No. 318, which was last raced by Jason Leffler at Pocono Raceway on June 9th. As a tribute to Leffler, who was tragically killed in a sprint car accident last week, Kennedy's Toyota will carry the familiar "LEFturn" decal above the right side door.(Humphrey Smith Racing)(6-19-2013)

  • New crew chief for #44: Walter Giles has assumed crew chief duties for the #44 Xxxtreme Motorsports team for driver Scott Riggs. Peter Sospenzo had left the #19 Humphrey-Smith team with some crew personnel and headed to the #44 team a few weeks ago, but has since left Xxxtreme Motorpsorts and headed back to Humphrey-Smith.(5-15-2013)

  • Changes with the #44 and #19 teams? UPDATE: been told that crew chief Peter Sospenzo has left the #19 Humphrey-Smith Racing team and is the new crew chief for the #44 Xxxtreme Motorsports team. Supposedly Mike Bliss, currently the driver of the #19 Toyota could move to the #44 Ford for Xxxtreme Motorsports. Scott Riggs has ran three races for Xxxtreme Motorsports this season. Supposedly the next race for Xxxtreme Motorsports will be at Charlotte Motor Speedway, possibly as soon as the Sprint Showdown on May 18th. Former #44 crew chief has supposedly moved on to the #79 Go Green Racing team in the Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series. No word who the new crew chief for the #19 team will be.
UPDATE: been told that Furr is not working with the #79 team and that Ben Leslie is working with the team as the crew chief.(5-1-2013)

  • 2013 silly season notes for #19-Mike Bliss / Humphrey Smith Racing: The #19 Humphrey Smith Racing team made it's debut at Auto Club Speedway with Mike Bliss as the driver. The team made 29 race attempts and ran 21 races. Humphrey Smith Racing also fielded a 2nd car, the #91, making 15 attempts and running in 11 races. No word on 2013 plans for Humphrey Smith Racing or Mike Bliss. See more about other teams on my 2013 Team / Driver Silly Season Chart.(1-10-2013)

  • Cook to run the #19 at Sonoma: Chris Cook will try to qualify the #19 car for Sunday's Sprint Cup race, but if he makes the field his race is likely to be a short one. His team will likely call him into the paddock and retire the car after a few laps as one of the "start and park" cars.(Marin Independent Journal), Mike Bliss was listed in the entry list and is the normal driver.
AND Cook will be in the main event, driving the #19 Toyota Camry for Humphrey-Smith Motorsports, as a last-minute substitute. Qualifying is Friday at 3:40 p.m. and the race is Sunday at noon. "This is not a track you can take for granted. You've got to be on your game," Cook said of his home track. The 3,400-pound machines are heavy, not sleek, and certainly not built for the challenges of a road course. "They like to go straight. These cars don't turn easily, they don't slow down easily," Cook said.(Larkspur-Corte Madera Patch)(6-22-2012)

  • Fines levied against Parsons and Humphrey: The North Carolina Industrial Commission has levied fines against Phil Parsons and Randy Humphrey, owners of HP Racing [was #66], now Phil Parsons Racing [is #98], for failing to provide workers' compensation insurance for most of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Parsons, who also works as a television analyst for SPEED, and Humphrey were also ordered to pay medical bills and wages to an HP Racing employee who suffered a work related injury last summer. The commission determined that Parsons and Humphrey failed to have the proper workers' compensation insurance from February 11, 2011 - October 27, 2011. Workers' compensation insurance was obtained by HP Racing just five days before the claim was initially set to be heard before the Deputy Commissioner of the Industrial Commission. The Commission also determined that the HP Racing employee had sustained a compensable injury by accident during the non-insured period. The North Carolina Assistant Attorney General's Office, Fraud Unit was also involved in the claim against HP Racing,
HP Racing [#66] competed in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2011, entering driver Michael McDowell in 32 events and earning over $2.4 million in race winnings. The team changed names in 2012, becoming Phil Parsons Racing [#98], a joint effort between Parsons, Whitney Motorsports and new partner Mike Curb, owner of Curb Records. Humphrey formed his own team [#19] for 2012, joining forces with Mark Smith to form Humphrey Smith Racing, fielding cars in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for driver Mike Bliss. The injured HP Racing employee is still awaiting approval from Parsons and Humphrey for necessary medical treatment, as well as payment of his wages and related medical expenses as ordered by the Industrial Commission. The employee has been unable to work since his accident last summer - and is ineligible for unemployment compensation - due to his injury and physician's orders preventing him from returning to work or seeking employment.(motorsport.com)(6-13-2012)

  • Humphrey plans for the #19 in 2012: #19 Humphrey Smith Racing team owner, Randy Humphrey comments on 2012 plans. "It's taken us a little longer than we planned, and been a little tougher than we thought, but we're working at it," said Humphrey, who fielded Mike Bliss' #19 Toyota in Sunday's STP 400 at Kansas Speedway. "We've been thankful to be here, and NASCAR's really been good to allow us to keep working at it and it's been good to us. We're trying to build our program into a bigger program. It's all about people, it's all about sponsors and making everything go." Humphrey, a veteran racer himself, is in his first season with new business partner Mark Smith after he and previous partner Phil Parsons [was #66, now #98] decided to part ways after the 2011 season. "Phil and I made a decision to do something different," said Humphrey, who stayed in Topeka during the Speedway race weekend. "They went a different direction and we went a different direction. We partnered up with Mark Smith, who has been building our motors for four years and owns three Nationwide teams," Humphrey said. "We rented a new big shop. Bliss had been driving for us before, and we got Mike to drive for us." The #19 car has qualified in three of four races, including the Kansas race, since getting a belated start to the year. "We waited a few races to get ourselves acclimated, to get our equipment built up and get our stuff in order and find the right people," Humphrey said. "We're now moving forward and have done really well since we started.'' Humphrey's team continues to employ a start-and-park strategy in most races to save money but has sponsors set up to be able to run complete races later in the season and also will race out of pocket in others. The long-term goal is be able go full bore in the series. "My whole mission is to race," Humphrey said. "I moved from Kansas to Charlotte to race. Our whole mission is to make this into a full-time racing program, with sponsorship. We've talked to some Kansas companies, we've talked to some Topeka-based companies and we're hoping some of those will take notice of us and work with us and come along and help us build our program."(Topeka Capital Journal)(4-23-2012)
