Dover International Speedway announces seat-widening plan to begin in 2012: In an ongoing effort to provide fans with the most exciting and enjoyable race experience in NASCAR, Dover International Speedway is pleased to announce a seat-widening plan for the tracks grandstands beginning in 2012. The multi-year process, which will take place throughout the entire outdoor grandstands, will begin in all seating sections located in Turns 2 and 3. Additional widening of seats toward Turns 1 and 4 and the frontstretch will begin after the conclusion of the 2012 season. When the process is complete, all seats will have increased from 18 to 22 in size throughout the venue. Year to year, were always exploring ways to improve the experience for fans who attend our races at the Monster Mile, said Denis McGlynn, president and CEO of Dover Motorsports, Inc. Because many seats have already been renewed by our most loyal fans, we dont want to displace them in an effort to make this change in one fell swoop. Well do our best to widen seats this year, and complete the process by 2014. By widening our seats we are responding to suggestions from our fans and allowing them to enjoy the race in a far more comfortable setting. When the process is complete by 2014, Dovers new seating capacity will be 113,000. Dovers race weekends in 2012 are June 1-3, 2012 and Sept. 28-30, 2012. USO to present the large military display at Dover: At a time when national pride is the highest its been in nearly a decade and patriotism has moved back to the forefront of American consciousness, Dover International Speedway is bringing something special to the FanZone for its May 13-15, 2011 race weekend, as the USO is set to present the Military Expo Village, the largest military display to ever be featured at a NASCAR track. It also supports approximately 5,100 military family members.
The USO village will feature more than a dozen visual and interactive displays, including a replica foxhole display that fully shows the living conditions for a soldier currently deployed overseas. The foxhole setup is designed with all the items a soldier would have to create their living quarters.
Other highlights of the expo include a mini C-17 Globemaster III from the 512th Airlift Wing that will give a scaled-down idea of one of the planes operated out of Dover Air Force Base; a number of military vehicles from the Delaware National Guard, such as a Phoenix satellite truck and a Hummer with a large weapon turret attached; two helicopters, including one celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation; and a climate-controlled museum with displays from the United States Marine Corps and the Naval Air Station Patuxent River.
The United States Coast Guard will display one of its communications vehicles used for natural disasters and homeland security matters, while the Seabees the construction battalion of the United States Navy will have a few of its own specialized vehicles on hand, including a tractor trailer, bulldozer and Humvee. Representatives from Dovers own Air Mobility Command Museum are set to display an exhibit featuring a jet engine, and a Navy SEAL team mentor will be available to answer questions for those interested in the elite unit.

Dover introduces "Dover Insider Tips" series: For first-time fans, a trip to Dover International Speedway can be sensory overload. The full-throttle experience of a race weekend at the Monster Mile can be as intense as the racing on the track. There's so much to see and do from the time fans set foot on the property that they don't always get to take advantage of everything that the venue has to offer. "Dover Insider Tips," a new series on DoverSpeedway.com, will give race fans insider access to new developments at the track, and advice on everything from purchasing tickets, parking, and who to contact at the track if they encounter a problem on race weekend. The idea for the series stems from two fan council meetings in 2010 where two groups of Dover fans met at the track to candidly discuss their experience with Speedway officials. The groups requested more year-round information about the track and more in-depth information about existing programs at the Speedway for fans. Fans can log on to DoverSpeedway.com every Thursday to read about a new topic(Dover PR)(1-7-2011)

Dover profits down for Chase weekend: Dover International Speedway saw attendance drop 16% for its Sprint Cup weekend last month but only a 3-4% decline in overall profits thanks to lower expenses, an increase in corporate spending and an increase in broadcast revenue, Dover Motorsports Senior Vice President Tim Horne said Thursday. The company reported adjusted earnings of $2.3 million for the first nine months of 2010, down 34% compared to $3.5 million in 2009. Those earnings don't include the write-downs of the value of Memphis, which was shut down last year, and Gateway, which is being shut down at the end of this year. Including those write-downs, Dover has lost $2.9 million in the first nine months of 2010, more than double the loss of $1.3 million in the first nine months of 2009. The company is trying to sell both race tracks, and is considering an auction for Memphis, Dover Motorsports CEO Denis McGlynn said. Overall, for the period of July-August - the Dover Cup weekend in June, the Gateway Nationwide/Truck weekend in July and the Nashville Truck weekend in August - admissions revenues were down 21% from $11.2 million to $8.9 million. For the year, Dover reported revenues down 19 percent from $23.1 million to $18.8 million. Overall revenues through Sept. 30 have been down 8.5% from $66.8 million to $61.2 million. As far as non-Cup events, Gateway, which combined its summer Nationwide and Camping World Truck series events into one weekend this year, saw its July profits decrease a little more than $100,000. The Nashville Truck race from August was down about $500,000 due to lack of a title sponsor and attendance declines, Horne said.(Scene Daily)(10-29-2010)
Dover Downs, Dover Motorsports call off merger: Bowing to pressure from minority shareholders, Dover Downs and Dover Motorsports have called off their planned merger. Henry Tippie, chairman of the board of both companies, said in a statement on Wednesday that it became apparent the proposed deal would not gain the approval it needed from minority shareholders. "While we believe that combining the two companies would have benefited both organizations, we have agreed to a mutual termination of our merger agreement," he said. Dover Downs operates a casino, hotel and horse racing operation. Dover Motorsports offers NASCAR racing. Because one person -- Tippie -- controls voting rights for more than 50 percent of the stock of both companies, their legal counsel suggested that a majority of minority shareholders would be needed to complete the deal. But minority shareholders on the NASCAR racing side said the deal undervalued the company. Some large minority shareholders like GAMCO Investors and Marathon Partners have argued that selling the company would reap a better return. An analyst affiliated with GAMCO even said it might make sense to close Dover International Speedway and move the two annual NASCAR races to Las Vegas and Chicago. The companies were one before they split eight years ago. Despite the separate corporations, they share many of the same executives and boards. As part of the deal, Motorsports shareholders would have received just over half a share of Dover Downs Gaming stock for each of their own shares. Both companies have struggled lately, with competition squeezing the gambling operations, and lower attendance dogging the racing company. Dover Motorsports has had disappointing results from the acquisitions of other racetracks, including one in St. Louis, which it will stop using for NASCAR in 2011. Dover Motorsports also owns Nashville Superspeedway in Tennessee.(Delaware News Journal)(10-18-2010)

Winning drivers in all three NASCAR series racing at the one-mile, high-banked oval this weekend will pull into a brand new Sunoco Victory Lane after conquering the monster. The 10-year agreement also names Sunoco as the "Official Fuel of Dover International Speedway." As part of this designation, Sunoco will have prominent signage surrounding Victory Lane including the Philadelphia-based company's familiar yellow, blue and red colors. The display will also feature a canopy-like structure that showcases their recognizable diamond logo on the checkered patterned floor. Future plans call for the addition of a small seating area near Victory Lane for VIPs, guests and race fans.(Dover PR)(9-23-2010)

Lifelong fan to attend Dover race 42nd straight year: On Sunday, when Jack Hoenstine of Queen, Pa., sits in the grandstands off Turn 4 at Dover International Speedway watching the Autism Speaks 400 presented by HERSHEYS Milk & Milkshakes, he will be attending a NASCAR race at the storied track for the 42nd straight year. In fact, since his initial visit to the Monster Mile in 1969, Hoenstine, a retired truck driver, has not missed a single NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Dover. Ive been to the 300 milers, the 500 milers, and now the 400 milers, the 78-year old retired truck driver said. Theyve got a horse race track there at Dover, but I go for the gas burners, not the hay burners. Hoenstine has seen it all at the track known as The Monster Mile. There was the caution-free race in 1971, and a wreck-filled one a decade later with only 13 cars running at the checkered flag. Hoenstine watched long-time short track driver Jody Ridley get his only NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win in a Junie Donlavey car (his only Cup win as an owner in 863 tries) and 52 year-old Harry Gant win in 1992. Harry would run that track really high, Hoenstine remembered. The most memorable Dover race, he says, was a controversial Richard Petty win in the Delaware 500 in September, 1975. Seven of the Kings 200 victories were at the high-banked track, including his 199th win. What made this race special was Petty came from six laps behind to catch Benny Parsons. Controversy erupted when Buddy Arrington, who had just purchased his car hauler from Petty Enterprises, parked his Plymouth in the upper groove of Turn 3, bringing out a caution enabling Petty to finally get on the lead lap. In addition to attending both NASCAR race weekends at Dover, Hoenstine still travels to a dozen NASCAR events each year. Last weekend, he celebrated an incredible streak of 60 consecutive years attending NASCAR races at Darlington Raceway. Additionally, since attending Charlotte Motor Speedways 1964 spring race (known as the World 600), Hoenstine has been to the Coca-Cola 600 every year. The sport is taking notice of this iron fans incredible devotion. Hoenstine is featured in the new NASCAR Library Collection book, The Weekend Starts on Wednesday: True Stories of Remarkable NASCAR Fans by Andrew Giangola, and was the subject of a special fan profile on ESPNs NASCAR Now that aired on Saturday, May 8. In addition to Hoenstine, more than 30 remarkable NASCAR fans are profiled in The Weekend Starts on Wednesday from a Lexington, NC, man whos been to every single Daytona 500 to a male nurse with a fear of heights who braved the elements to bring the Sprint Cup flag to the top of Mt. Everest. A critically acclaimed work of wit and feeling, the NASCAR Library Collection book The Weekend Starts on Wednesday is a vivid commentary on the love affair millions of fans have for a great American sport.(Dover International Speedway)(5-13-2010)

Dover Motorsports shuts down Memphis track: Dover Motorsports, Inc. announced that it was ceasing all operations at Memphis Motorsports Park and that it would not be promoting any events in Memphis in 2010. As previously announced, the Memphis facility had been under an agreement of sale to Gulf Coast Entertainment but Gulf Coast was unable to secure financing. "This was a difficult decision for us, but one that ultimately was dictated by economics," said Denis McGlynn, President and CEO of Dover Motorsports. "We greatly appreciate the many years of dedication shown by our Memphis employees and their efforts to make Memphis such a great destination for the racing community - from racing fans and drivers to sponsors, team owners and sanctioning bodies. For all concerned, including the Memphis community, it is truly sad to see Memphis Motorsports Park taken off the racing schedule. NASCAR has approved the realignment of our NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series events from Memphis Motorsports Park to our Nashville and Gateway facilities."
The realigned events and dates are as follows:
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Nashville Superspeedway, April 2, 2010, (together with NASCAR Nationwide Series event on April 3, 2010)
NASCAR Nationwide Series, Gateway International Raceway, October 23, 2010.(Dover Motorsports PR)(10-30-2009)
ISC, SMI looked to jointly purchase Dover in 2007: Speedway Motorsports Inc. and International Speedway Corp. formed an alliance two years ago to look into the possible purchase of Dover International Speedway, according to a letter from Dover Motorsports Inc. general counsel to one of its shareholders. The letter was sent last month to Mario Cibelli, managing member of Marathon Partners, which owns 16.3 percent of the company's common stock (but only 1.5 percent of voting stock) and a harsh critic of Dover management who wants the company to be sold. In a filing Thursday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Cibelli asks for a forum on issues pertaining to Dover Motorsports shareholders, and the letter is posted on the forum project's Web site. Dover general counsel Klaus M. Belohoubek writes in the letter that Cibelli's actions might have thwarted the potential sale by driving down the asking price. A Dover spokesman said the company had no comment but did confirm the authenticity of the letter. The letter states that on May 2, 2007, Dover Motorsports Chairman Henry Tippie, Belohoubek and other Dover Motorsports executives met with SMI Chairman Bruton Smith and now-ISC CEO Lesa France Kennedy in an airplane hangar in Dallas to entertain an offer to acquire Dover.(SceneDaily)(10-10-2009)
