Kenny Wallace Book Released: Motorsports publisher Coastal 181 announced the release of Inside Herman's World, the autobiography of popular NASCAR driver and SPEED TV personality Kenny Wallace. The book was written with Joyce Standridge and includes forewords by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mark Martin, and Ken Schrader. Silent Speedways of the Carolinas: NASCAR held its first Strictly Stock race in Charlotte on June 19, 1949, and, in the following decades, dozens of large and small tracks throughout the Carolinas were home to a major NASCAR event. Called Strictly Stock only in 1949, it was known as the Grand National Division from 1950–1970, and then NASCAR’s top circuit became the Winston Cup in 1971, and most of the dirt and small tracks were subsequently gutted from the schedule. Although a handful of those speedways tenuously held on through exploding popularity, and an influx of big corporate dollars, the transition to metropolitan markets and super speedways was inevitable. Some of the original tracks, like the North Wilkesboro Motor Speedway, still stand testament to the sport’s not-too-distant past. Others, like the Charlotte Speedway, are long gone, leaving only memories and photographs. This is the story of every racetrack in North and South Carolina that held at least one big time race through 1971, but is no longer used for auto racing. Seven are one-race wonders, while others are as much racing legends as the sport’s past champions. Chapters cover each track’s big time history, from early background through its racing years to its current status. 'Fireball's' daughter wants to document 'Daddy's' life: Roberts Trivette wants to write a book to share her side of the story about the man whose friends knew as Glenn, his family knew as "Bubbie" and Daddy and the millions of old-time NASCAR fans knew as "Fireball."
"The title is 'Fireball Roberts, his Daughter's Story of his Career,' " Roberts Trivette said. "This is letting everyone know this is coming from me who lived it, who is living to tell it. Mother (Doris) told it in any interview she was ever asked to do, whether it be newspaper or television, and she did an awesome job with it because my mother dedicated her life to preserve his memory." Roberts, born in Tavares and raised in Apopka, earned his nickname not from racing but from his prowess as a pitcher on a local American Legion baseball team. He went on to become one of the sport's premier drivers, winning 33 races -- including the 1962 Daytona 500 -- before being fatally injured in a fiery wreck at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1964 when Pam was 13 years old.(more at Florida Today)(2-7-2007)

Stremme's spotter featured in book: Mike Calinoff, who is the spotter for Nextel Cup driver #40-David Stremme, is one of the main characters in the opening chapter of recently released, "Book of Fate", by best-selling author Brad Meltzer. New racing movie records history of diversity in auto racing: "Black Wheels," a one-hour film exploring African-Americans in racing from as far back as 80 years ago, such as the black crew chief who was forced to pose as a janitor while helping a white driver win the 1934 Indy 500. At Dover International Speedway this weekend, Bill Lester will be the only African-American behind the wheel for any of the three major races, driving in Friday's MBNA Racepoints 200 in the Craftsman Truck Series. But NASCAR's Drive for Diversity program, in its second year, is putting young minority drivers in position to develop in lower racing series. One of them is Joe Henderson III, a 19-year-old racing in NASCAR's Dodge Weekly Racing Series. His father, Joe, is a first-hand witness to the progress made in a generation, watching his son race throughout the Southeast after his own racing aspirations were dashed decades ago by tracks that didn't welcome him. Henderson III said his racing sparked interest in his friends, who otherwise "don't see racing as a sport for black people, just because they don't see anybody out there like them." That's where the history comes in, with the knowledge that even though there aren't many African-American racers right now, they have been a few in the past. l In 1924, the Gold and Glory Sweepstakes was created as an alternative for black drivers barred from the Indy 500. The race was part of the Colored Speedway Association, the racing version of the Negro Leagues. Charlie Wiggins, dubbed the Negro Speed King, won the Gold and Glory many times before it was disbanded in 1936. In 1934, he operated as the crew chief, in disguise, for the Indy 500 winner. He died in 1979. Joie Ray was the first African-American racer to be licensed by the American Automobile Association and was the first black driver to run in a NASCAR race, in 1952. Wendell Scott became the only African-American to win a NASCAR race, in 1963, and four times finished in the top 10 in the points standings despite running as an independent, without factory sponsorship. Scott's life was chronicled in the 1977 film "Greased Lightning," starring Richard Pryor. Recent history centers around the recently retired Willy T. Ribbs, and Lester, who continues the fight for monetary backing. Greg Calhoun, the co-founder of the Drive for Diversity Program, hopes "Black Wheels," brings African-American corporations and millionaires to NASCAR, not because they want to make money, but because they want to aid black racers. New Petty Book: A large, diverse collection of Richard Petty photographs has been released. Richard Petty: Images of the King ($29.95, MBI Publishing) is a 256-page work compiled by Ben Blake and Dick Conway. Blake wrote the text and Conway supplied most of the more than 250 photographs, many of which are rare and have never been published. ''Sorting through all my Petty stuff brought back a lot of memories,'' said Conway, whose photos have appeared in numerous racing books and publications. ''One of my favorite shots is of some of Richard's old junked race cars that I found sitting out in the woods behind his house. New Racing Magazine: Racing Fan, a flashy magazine with loose ties to Sports Illustrated, will hit newsstands March 28. Published in an oversized format (like ESPN The Magazine and Rolling Stone), the magazine is photo- and graphic-driven and targets ``the 75 million fans that have made NASCAR the fastest- growing sort in America.'' Two issues will be produced, and if they're well-received, the magazine will publish monthly, editor Scott Mowbray said. New Book Ranks Drivers: Speed wins races, but in racing it’s not the only determination of ranking drivers. Now, a new book by Unicoi writer Jeff Birchfield uses three statistical categories to rank some of the top names in racing. Titled “The Fast Crowd: 2004-05 Statistical Ranking of Racing’s Top Drivers,” the 64-page book identifies the Top 30 in the Nextel Cup Series. “Unlike baseball where there have frequently been statistical buffs, they’ve been rare in stock-car racing,” Birchfield explained. “However, for those of who enjoy research and statistics, it is a labor of love.” He said he thought about doing such a book for the past three or four years. In fact, he did a Top 10 ranking about 10 years ago for Inside Track magazine. Birchfield based his rankings on three categories — race wins over the past three seasons, a driver’s winning percentage with his current or most recent team and the percentage of times he has finished in the Top 10 over the course of his career. Still, he noted, statististics in racing require a little more work than such sports statistics as passing yards in football or batting percentages in baseball. “It’s just a tougher sport to do statistics work,” he said. He took some of his information from such sources as the 2004 NASCAR Media Guide and the NASCAR Preview and Press Guides available on news stands as well as old racing newspapers, magazines and track programs. Birchfield has been writing sports for 12 years, including stints in the sports sections of the Elizabethton Star and his current employer, the Johnson City Press. In addition, he operated the sports publication Sports Talk and has written freelance sports articles for Richard Petty Stock Car Magazine, Winston Cup Illustrated [Now NASCAR Illustrated] and FasTrack, a racing newspaper. He worked on his most recent endeavor in partnership with photographer Dave Boyd, who provided all the photographs in the book. Birchfield and Boyd worked together at the Elizabethton Star and, most recently, with the Johnson City Press. The majority of the book’s photographs originated at Bristol Motor Speedway. Birchfield said he sat down with Boyd and they sorted through photographs to choose the ones for publication. Birchfield plans to launch a non-traditional book tour to promote the book. An acquaintance suggested to Birchfield that he promote the book at area flea markets. “Flea markets always seem to be located near race tracks,” Birchfield said. In addition, he is working with smaller track promoters to sell the book. Birchfield and his wife, Sheila, are the parents of two children, Adam, a third grade student at Unicoi Elementary School, and 4-year-old daughter, Laura. New Vukovich Book: A new book on the legendary two time winner of the Indianapolis 500 has arrived from the printer. Video: The Wendell Scott Story: This documentary is about the life of Wendell Oliver Scott, the only African-American racing driver to compete successfully in the Grand National (now Winston Cup) series during the time period of 1961-1974. His story, as told in the words of family and friends, is one of determination, mechanical brilliance, courage, and family values. Wendell competed extremely well even though he was among the ranks of the poorly equipped independent racers that fought against the factory-backed teams. Born in August 1928, Scott grew up in Danville, Virginia. His first job was driving a taxi after he mustered out of the Army, in which he served as a mechanic. He then hauled illegal whiskey and was famous in that region for his amazing driving skills. Starting his career after being bailed out of jail by a race promoter, Scott won 120 sportsman dirt track races and won the state championship in 1959. From there, he went on to win the infamous Jacksonville 600 in 1963, his only major Grand National win. The original trophy was officially given to Buck Baker, and Wendell later received a generic wooden trophy with no fanfare due to an official "scoring error." Enduring often brutal racism, Scott raced in over 500 NASCAR races from 1961-1974 and put all of his children through college. The story of his family's participation is one of great sacrifice and strength by each and every member.(2004)

NASCAR Launches Licensed Library Collection: NASCAR is set to wave the green flag on a new program as part of its publishing program, bringing NASCAR licensed books together into one branded group - the NASCAR Library Collection. The program launched on May 21st, and be immediately viewable via the NASCAR.com Superstore, which will give access to the NASCAR Library Collection specialty store on its homepage.
This year the NASCAR Library Collection will welcome 18 new titles to be part of the collection, which will include books for both kids and adults. Canadian TV Guide news: The Canadian version of TV Guide magazine will feature its first-ever NASCAR cover on Saturday. Milestone for Racing Milestones Magazine: Writers at Racing Milestones Magazine, Trader Publishing Company's monthly magazine for NASCAR race fans, earned the two most prestigious writing awards in motorsports journalism for stories published in 2003.
Monte Dutton earned first place in magazine writing from the National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) at its annual meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Jan. 18th for his story, "Dale Jr.: True to Himself," published in November 2003.
Four days later, on Jan. 22, Godwin Kelly won the magazine writing category and a Rolex watch in the Miller Lite Motorsports Journalism Awards of Excellence in honor of Russ Catlin for his story, "Ryan Newman: One-Track Mind," published in October 2003. The Journalism Awards of Excellence in honor of Russ Catlin recognize outstanding motorsports coverage in five categories while honoring the memory of Catlin, a motorsports journalism pioneer. Sports Illustrated Mag: In its annual post-season NASCAR issue, Sports Illustrated magazine includes results of a survey of nearly 1,400 race fans conducted at various tracks around the country. Some of the more interesting results include:
- The best driver of all time? Dale Earnhardt, with 56%, easily over Richard Petty's 17%.
- Dale Earnhardt Jr. is the current favorite driver of 28% of the fans surveyed, with Jeff Gordon next at 15%.
- When asked which driver has the most arrogant fans, 47% said Gordon.
- The fans' three favorite tracks are Bristol, with 22%, Daytona, with 19%, and Lowe's Motor Speedway with 13%.
- More than half of the fans, 57%, attend two to four races per year. And 48% of them travel 200 miles or more to attend a race, with 25% traveling 500 miles or more.
- An amazing 19% of fans said they had spent $1,000 or more on NASCAR merchandise in the past year, while 97% of the fans said they'd bought at least one piece of merchandise in the past year.

UPDATE: “The Hard Chargers”- Curtis Turner book update: Writer Stuart Sprung, from San Diego, CA has completed research and is well into the process of writing. The book will be about an elite group of NASCAR Grand National (Now, Winston Cup) era drivers known as “Chargers.”.. Although the book will tell true stories about many of the fabled drivers, Curtis Turner will be the central character due to being one of the most colorful and influential racers involved in the creation of NASCAR.. From his “all out” driving style and wild antics to building the Charlotte Motor Speedway, he left an impression everywhere he went.. At one point he was banned for life from NASCAR, but came back in dramatic fashion to win the inaugural race at Rockingham.. Despite many triumphs and tragedies, the world was his playground until his life was cut short when he died in a plane crash in 1970.
The story promises to be even more compelling due to the generous assistance of legends such as: Bobby & Donnie Allison, Mario Andretti, Buck Baker, Dan Gurney, Ned Jarrett, Junior Johnson, Fred Lorenzen, Hershel McGriff, Ralph Moody, Marvin Panch, Raymond Parks, David Pearson, Richard Petty, “Tiger” Tom Pistone, Bud Moore, Louise Smith, Humpy Wheeler, Glen & Leonard Wood and Cale Yarborough.. Special NASCAR TV Guides: As NASCAR approaches the second half of its 2003 Winston Cup season, TV Guide hits newsstands with its July 5 special Winston Cup mid-season issue (on sale June 30th), featuring two different collector's covers. The sport's two leading pairs-Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Michael Waltrip; and Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch-will each command a cover. National Anthem at Chicago: Multi-platinum recording artist Jo Dee Messina will perform a one-hour concert Sunday, July 14 prior to the NASCAR Winston Cup Tropicana 400 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, IL. The concert will take place on the start/finish line and is scheduled to begin at 11:30am. In addition to the concert Messina will also perform the National Anthem before the start of the Tropicana 400. Warner Bros. Records and Curb Records have also announced a compilation CD, Inside Traxx, to be released on June 11 including country music artists Messina, Tim McGraw, Hank Williams Jr., Neal McCoy, Travis Tritt, Dwight Yoakam and many others. Racing Wives Book: Liz Allison, who knows a little about it, provides some insight about racing relationships in her new book, "Racing Wives: The Women Behind the Sunday Drivers." Allison was the wife of Winston Cup star and second-generation Alabama Gang member Davey Allison, who died while trying to land his helicopter at Talladega. The author has teamed with UMI Publications on this latest effort, her third book. She started work on it about a year ago. The work began in earnest after the 2001 racing season ended and her editors moved her deadline up early this year. A couple of prominent NASCAR wives aren't in there, which is creating a little bit of a buzz about the book, no doubt to her delight and that of her publisher. Brooke Gordon, who last month filed for divorce from four-time Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon, isn't in there. Neither is Teresa Earnhardt. As for Earnhardt, "That was out of respect for her and what she was going through," Allison says. She got word about her undertaking to the widow of seven-time champion Dale Earnardt, but didn't push when she didn't get a response. As for Brooke Gordon, Allison pushed a little. Enough that the former Miss Winston finally let her know that she didn't want to participate "for personal reasons." "I knew something was going on there, but I was still shocked when she filed," said Allison, who now lives in Tennessee but remains plugged in with much of the NASCAR family in North Carolina. She's got more than two dozen wives in her book and many have provided photos from their personal collections. So there are some images there that most of have never had the opportunity to see, which is kinda neat. The ABC TV news show "Downtown" interviewed Allison and several of the wives at Lowe's Motor Speedway's Speedway Club this week and plans to air a segment on them and the book April 17. New Book, Chapter about Jayski: The new book "Stock-Car Racing Lives" by Richard Sowers and published by David Bull Publishing(1-800-831-1758), was on QVC's "For Race Fans Only" Friday night as an advance sale item. "For Race Fans Only" hosts Dan Hughes and Tim Bertoni are in the book. Terry Labonte also appeared on the show. The official launch for the book will be the Friday press conference at Atlanta 11/17. Why do I mention this???? Because, JAYSKI, is a chapter in the book, along with NASCAR owners, drivers and other interesting people. Plus since JAYSKI is losing his sponsor, Racing Champions, at this end of the 2000 season, the book couldn't be coming out at a better time.
The idea behind "Stock-Car Racing Lives" was to give fans a window into Winston Cup racing through the eyes of the people who make it go. Street & Smith's Sports Group has announced that American Racing Classics 2000, a collection of rescued stories from the out-of-print series American Racing Classics, will soon be available to NASCAR fans. In January, 1992, Griggs Publishing Co., then the publisher of NASCAR Winston Cup Scene and NASCAR Winston Cup Illustrated, launched the first edition of a project called American Racing Classics. It consisted of a series of hard-backed books, published quarterly. The books were intended to be a comprehensive history of NASCAR through stories and photos of its drivers, great races and significant events. Four editions of American Racing Classics were published in 1992, followed by just one each in 1993 and 1994. Then the series went out of publication.
"With American Racing Classics out of print, interested NASCAR fans found it almost impossible to locate the full six-book series," said Steve Waid, Street & Smith's vice president for editorial development. "As the years passed, some fans discovered one or two volumes here and there. They liked what they saw and read and we at Street & Smith's received many inquires about other volumes. We could only say American Racing Classics was out of print and gone forever." This year, Street & Smith's found, intact, materials that comprised several pieces from American Racing Classics. These pieces dated from the very first issue through the last. Material for the entire series was not recovered and never will be.
However, Street & Smith's managed to restore the rediscovered, original pieces of American Racing Classics and will present it in magazine form in a special, limited edition of American Racing Classics 2000. Found inside American Racing Classics 2000 are stories and photos of drivers who were stars of their day - like the late Tim Richmond and Pete Hamilton - and others who were no more than journeymen, like Buddy Arrington and the late Wendell Scott, the pioneer African-American competitor.
Also, three events have been parts of NASCAR lore are included. They are the very first NASCAR race, the first Southern 500 and the 1979 Daytona 500. There are 12 original stories in all, complete with rare photographs. They will be presented as they were in American Racing Classics six to eight years ago. No changes have been made to the content or format. The 128-page American Racing Classics 2000 contains no advertising.
