PRN gets New Hampshire rights beginning in September: Performance Racing Network will broadcast all Nationwide and Sprint Cup races from New Hampshire Motor Speedway beginning with the September 2008 race at the track. PRN is the radio network of new NHMS owner Speedway Motorsports Inc. and traditionally broadcasts events at SMI tracks. A dispute over the radio rights occurred after the sale because SMI rival International Speedway Corp. had a contract for its Motor Racing Network to do the races. SMI argued in court documents that the MRN contract was invalid. The two sides have agreed to a partial settlement in the case and will go to mediation for the remainder of the dispute. MRN will broadcast the upcoming races in June at the track. MRN to air June New Hampshire race: Motor Racing Network will handle the radio broadcast of the Nationwide and Sprint Cup races June 28-29 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway, spokesman Wes Harris of MRN parent company International Speedway Corp. said Tuesday afternoon. Motor Racing Network, owned by the France family-controlled ISC and rival Performance Racing Network are involved in lawsuits over the radio broadcast rights stemming from PRN parent company Speedway Motorpsorts Inc.'s purchase of the track in January. PRN typically broadcasts the Nationwide and Cup races from SMI tracks. A partial settlement in their court battles has resulted in MRN being granted the exclusive broadcast rights for June and for the two sides to enter mediation in hopes of settling which network will broadcast the September 2008 weekend as well as the 2009 and 2010 weekends, Harris said. If the two sides can’t agree on a settlement on what should happen beyond June, they will return to court in 60 days, according to court documents.(SceneDaily)(5-7-2008)
Dale Jr. to interview Danica on radio: #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. is scheduled to interview popular Indy Racing League driver Danica Patrick this week during his XM radio show, "Dale Jr. Unrestricted." The interview with Patrick, who won the Indy Japan 300 in April, will air nationwide on the XM Sports Nation Channel 144 this Thursday at 7:30pm. Encore broadcasts will air at 10:30pm on Thursday and 1:30pm and 6:30pm on Saturday.(5-1-2008)
PRN-MRN dispute over New Hampshire continues: With fewer than two months before Sprint Cup cars take to the New Hampshire Motor Speedway oval, there is no resolution on the question of which radio network will broadcast the events. The dispute between Motor Racing Network and Performance Racing Network for the radio rights for New Hampshire races will remain in U.S. District Court in New Hampshire for the time being. Both sides had filed lawsuits over the rights, which stem from the sale of the track from the Bahre family to Speedway Motorsports Inc. earlier this year. The track has a contract with MRN, which is owned by International Speedway Corp, a track-operating rival of Speedway Motorsports. Speedway Motorsports owns PRN and wants PRN to broadcast its events. PRN filed suit in New Hampshire a day before MRN sued PRN in Florida in March. PRN claims the contract is unenforceable. An injunction hearing was scheduled for today in Florida state court, but it has been postponed because the New Hampshire case was filed first. MRN has now asked for the U.S. District Court in New Hampshire to issue an injunction to allow it to broadcast the events this year. No hearing date has been set. The NASCAR race weekends are June 27-29 and Sept. 12-14. MRN’s contract with NHIS requires it to give the track 25 percent of all advertising revenues. That has resulted in revenues of more than $750,000 for the track in the last seven years, according to court records. That would mean that MRN has taken in approximately $3 million in advertising revenue for New Hampshire events the last seven years, averaging approximately $429,000 a year.(SceneDaily)(4-30-2008) Comment here
PRN and MRN fighting over NHMS rights: Speedway Motorsports Inc. and International Speedway Corp. are suing each other over the radio broadcast rights at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. ISC has had a long-standing contract with the track to broadcast the races on its Motor Racing Network. SMI, which bought the track in January, wants the races on its own Performance Racing Network. The current contract awarding MRN the option to broadcast races at the track was signed in 2000 and required a three-year notice of termination. MRN agreed to give the track 25 percent of its advertising revenues from the events it broadcasts, and in the last seven years, MRN has paid the track more than $750,000, according to court documents. According to court records, SMI claims the contract is not enforceable and that MRN didn't exercise its option in time to broadcast the Nationwide-Cup weekend June 28-29 and the Cup race Sept. 14. "MRN purportedly took the 'exclusive' right to broadcast all NASCAR events held at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway," SMI Chairman Burton Smith wrote in a Feb. 7 letter to ISC that is part of the court file. "However, in this very same document, MRN left it open for itself to choose whether or not it would, in fact, broadcast any such events. As a result, there is no mutuality in the Agreement, and, the Agreement is … unenforceable and void. I cannot in good faith allow New Hampshire Motor Speedway or SMI to be subjected to this one-sided document which leaves them in limbo, subject to the whims of MRN." An ISC letter in response to Smith, written by NASCAR Chairman Brian France as part of his role as a member of the ISC board of directors, states: "MRN has a three-year binding contract to produce those events, and it is impossible for them to simply walk away. Additionally, they have already started packaging and selling advertisements to these events." MRN claims it has contracts with advertisers from at least 11 major companies for New Hampshire broadcasts, according to court documents. ISC spokesman Wes Harris said Monday that "Just because the facility has changed hands doesn't mean that agreements are not supposed to be honored" and that time is of the essence. MRN has more than 500 affiliates for some of its Cup races, while PRN has more than 750 affiliates. "There's a lot of confusion in the marketplace, with these sponsors and affiliates," Harris said. "We need to get it resolved ASAP. … Itąs not just impacting MRN and New Hampshire Speedway, it's impacting all these affiliates, it's impacting the various sponsors and advertisers. It's definitely a challenging situation." The lawsuit PRN filed is pending in U.S. District Court in New Hampshire with no hearings currently scheduled. Justice Dept Approves XM-Sirius Deal: The Justice Department approved Sirius Satellite Radio's $5 billion buyout of rival XM Satellite Radio on Monday, saying the deal was unlikely to hurt competition or consumers. The deal was approved despite opposition from consumer groups and an intense lobbying campaign by the land-based radio industry. The buyout received shareholder approval in November. The companies said the merger will save hundreds of millions of dollars in operating costs - savings that will ultimately benefit their customers. The Justice Department, in a lengthy news release explaining its decision, said the two companies compete not just with each other but also with other forms of radio and entertainment.(Associated Press), no word how this will effect Sirius or XM's coverage of NASCAR.(3-24-2008) Comment here
MRN Announces New Programming: The Motor Racing Network (MRN) debuted its new "NASCAR Today Midday" program on over 100 radio stations nationwide on Monday. The program, which has been created in response to the demands of race fans for more NASCAR coverage, is a two-minute program that will air Monday through Friday at midday throughout the year. PRN Radio wins six NMPA Awards: At the annual National Motorsports Press Association dinner, the Performance Racing Network [PRN] walked away with six radio awards. PRN's Doug Rice was named Broadcaster of the Year co-winner along with capturing first place in the short form feature and second place in the live event categories. Kent Bernhardt collect two awards - first place in long form radio and third place in short form feature. MRN Radio wins seven NMPA Awards: The National Motorsports Press Association held their annual Awards Ceremony on Sunday, January 20 and MRN Radio earned multiple honors. Motor Racing Network (MRN Radio) - The Voice of NASCAR, won seven awards in four different categories. The awards were won by the network as a whole, with three individuals being sited for their efforts, as well. In the Long Form Radio category, Live Event Director Ryan Horn won Third Place for the "Road to the Nextel Cup" which aired during the 2006 Nextel Cup Series Awards ceremony in New York City. In the Short Form category, Producer Marty Hough won Second Place for "NASCAR Live." MRN Radio took two of three awards in the Spot News category. Producer Marty Hough won First Place for "NASCAR Live" and Co-Lead Anchor Joe Moore won Third Place for "NASCAR Today." Both shows are long-time staples of the MRN Radio Network heard throughout the country on a majority of their 750 affiliates. For the Live Event category, MRN Radio earned two of three honors. They were awarded First Place for the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway. That race featured a last-lap chase to the checkered with Jamie McMurray winning by .005 seconds over Kyle Busch. The network also won Third Place for the UAW-Ford 500 at Talladega Superspeedway in October. The prestigious Broadcaster of the Year Award is the one saved for last. Headbanger Rachtman involved in NASCAR: Riki Rachtman is probably best-known for hosting the heavy metal-themed "Headbangers Ball" on MTV from 1990 to 1995, but now the tattooed California native spends his time around heavy metal of a different kind. Rachtman hosts "Racing Rocks," a radio show heard on more than 100 stations, reports for "NASCAR 24/7" on NASCAR.com and also appears on the TV show "Raceday" on SPEED. Rachtman says he's enjoying his first trip to Talladega. "I could not wait to experience the Talladega infield, so I went into the infield at about 4 o'clock and stayed there until about 1:30 a.m., and I had the greatest time. I live in Southern California, and everything they say about Southern hospitality is true. The thing that really surprised me was the Alabama police. I walk through and I've got greasy hair and tattoos, and an Alabama policeman would come up to me and go, `You're not from around here, are you?' Mikey to have XM radio show: XM announced that Michael Waltrip will join racing's biggest stars exclusively on XM Radio. Waltrip will host the half-hour weekly show "Michael Waltrip Out Loud," exclusively on XM. Debuting on March 20, "Michael Waltrip Out Loud" will air every Tuesday night from 7:00- 7:30pm/et on XM's sports talk radio channel XM Sports Nation (XM 144). Waltrip's show will feature his insight into the world of racing, as well as guests from the world of music and entertainment. Fans can tune in to hear Waltrip with breaking updates from the road or back at his newly opened Waltrip Raceworld shop in Cornelius, NC. Sirius and XM expected to announce merger UPDATE: Satellite radio operators Sirius and XM are expected to announce their long-awaited merger today, according to a source familiar with the deal. The two sides were locked in negotiations over the weekend trying to hammer out a final agreement with an eye toward going public with the merger today in Washington, D.C., where XM is based, this source said. Talks were still going on at press time and the deal could fall apart at any time. With antitrust issues of paramount importance, this source said lawyers for both companies were working overtime to fine-tune the language of the agreement and frame the discussion around the deal itself and not regulatory concerns. The transaction is expected to be structured as a merger of equals, but given Sirius' higher enterprise value, shareholders in the Mel Karmazin-led firm will likely come away with a larger%age of a combined company. According to the source, XM Chairman Gary Parsons will retain that title in the combined entity, with Karmazin likely taking the CEO role. It is unclear what role, if any, XM CEO Hugh Panero will play. Combining Sirius and XM would result in a single satellite radio operator with more than 12 million total subscribers. A deal would also marry Sirius content, such as Howard Stern, Frank Sinatra and NASCAR with XM's Oprah Winfrey, Bob Dylan and Major League Baseball. More important, analysts widely predict that a deal would also save the two companies nearly $7 billion annually. Gaining regulatory approval "could take up to 15 months; hence, we think any proposed deal needs to be announced by the end of March to close by mid-2008," Peck wrote.(New York Post)(2-19-2007)
UPDATE: XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. and Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., rivals in the fledgling satellite radio industry, have agreed to combine in a deal that investors hope will result in lower costs, assuming it overcomes significant regulatory hurdles. The companies billed the deal announced Monday as a merger of equals, with shareholders of both companies owning approximately 50% of the combined entity. However, Sirius will be giving $4.57 billion of its stock to XM shareholders, a substantial premium to the value of their shares. Sirius' Chief Executive Mel Karmazin will lead the combined company, and XM's CEO Hugh Panero will stay on only until the deal is closed. XM Chairman Gary Parsons will remain in that role. XM radio receivers can't receive signals from Sirius, and vice versa. But Karmazin and Parsons said in an interview that the companies are working on developing a receiver that could receive both signals. In the meantime, they said, assuming the deal goes through, the companies would make other arrangements to bring programming that's currently exclusive to one provider to listeners of the other, such as getting Major League Baseball games — currently only available on XM — to Sirius listeners.(MSNBC)(2-20-2007)
Sirius NASCAR Radio Daytona 500 coverage: On Sunday, February 18, SIRIUS will air the Daytona 500 live nationwide on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio, channel 128, carrying the broadcast of Motor Racing Network (MRN). On 10 additional channels, SIRIUS will combine the race broadcast with the driver-to-crew chatter of 10 different race teams, allowing fans to follow the overall race call and the in-car audio of a driver on a single channel. Listeners will hear drivers and crew chiefs schedule pit stops and discuss strategy over audio of the overall race broadcast. When the team members are not on the radio the audio of the live race broadcast will come up allowing listeners to follow the entire race uninterrupted. PRN Dominates NMPA Awards, Garrow Earns Broadcaster of the Year Honor: Members of the Performance Racing Network broadcast team received seven awards and co-anchor Mark Garrow was named Broadcaster of the Year during the National Motorsports Press Association's recent awards dinner at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Concord Convention Center. PRN staff members took home seven of the possible 12 awards in the four radio categories, including three first-place trophies. In addition to being named Broadcaster of the Year for the second time, Garrow claimed first place in the Short Form Feature category for "Bowyer Joins the Mob," a clever take-off on the popular HBO television program "The Sopranos." Sirius and XM Radio to merge? UPDATE 2...maybe?: Shares of satellite radio operators XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. and Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. rose Friday, on speculation that the companies might merge or combine in another way. "We believe a 50/50 enterprise value split or perhaps a slight premium to XM shareholders may be warranted in a merger scenario," Stifel Nicolaus analyst Kit Spring said in a Thursday client note, keeping a "Buy" rating on XM shares. RBC Capital Markets analyst Ryan Vineyard in a Friday note to investors said a combination would generate long-term value for shareholders, given slow retail channel growth. Advertising, office, retail incentives and other synergies total between $5 billion to $6 billion, he wrote. UPDATE: FCC Chairman Kevin Martin talked about the potential merger of XM and Sirius Satellite Radio yesterday [Jan 17th], and based on what he said, that merger is not looking good. Martin told reporters after yesterday’s FCC meeting that a restriction against having a single owner for both satellite services was written into regulations that authorized the two licenses in 1997. Martin summed it up in one sentence: “There is a prohibition on one entity owning both of these businesses.” Following Martin’s comments, shares of XM fell 9.9 percent, its biggest drop in eight months; while Sirius fell 7 percent for its biggest decline in a month.(Radio Ink)

U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin said on Thursday a rule that bars XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc.and Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. from merging could be altered, if requested. Martin, speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of a conference in New York, said he was not aware of any request to change the rule on satellite radio licensing ownership, which currently prohibits one entity from owning both licenses. "The commission looks at anything that is presented to it (and) all of the commission's rules are open to be changed," Martin said. Bi-monthly radio show debuts January 4: #89-Faith Motorsports will debut a bi-monthly radio show on January 4, enabling Morgan Shepherd fans to enjoy regular updates on the team's progression through the 2007 race season. MRN considering moving to Charlotte: Motor Racing Network Inc. is considering moving its offices from Daytona Beach, Fla., to the Charlotte area, and the transition could come as early as next summer, the Charlotte Business Journal reports. MRN Radio, which employs about 40 people, is owned by International Speedway Corp. and broadcasts all of NASCAR's Craftsman Truck Series races as well as the majority of Nextel Cup and Busch series events. The story states that the company could move into the NASCAR Hall of Fame complex in the recently approved office tower, though that facility isn't scheduled to be completed until 2010. AFN to end radio play-by-play sports: Troops apparently would rather watch their sports than listen to them, so American Forces Network plans to pull the plug on all play-by-play sports radio later this summer. The Sept. 9 NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Richmond International Raceway will be the last AFN radio sports play-by-play broadcast, the Defense Department announced Wednesday. AFN Radio already has stopped broadcasting most sports events, but the network will complete contracts with Motor Racing Network and the Indy Racing League. AFN cited surveys that showed service members prefer to watch sports on television rather than listen to them on radio. “When radio sports coverage comes on, most listeners tune out,” said Robert Matheson, director of broadcasting at the AFN Broadcast Center in Riverside, Calif. “Our mission is better served when the largest possible audience tunes in to non-sports programming and spends more time listening.” AFN television used to carry only one or two games a week, he said, but now has 80 events a week over a variety of networks..(Air Force Times)(7-6-2006)

Doug Rice Named President of PRN: Veteran broadcasting executive Doug Rice has been promoted to president and general manager of Performance Racing Network and Gerry Horn, a 20-year veteran of corporate sales, was elevated to vice president of PRN sales. The announcement was made by H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., Performance Racing Network's parent company. Rice joined PRN in 1988 as director of affiliates and, after serving in other managerial positions, was named vice president and general manager in 1999. Team Owners Want Sirius Money: NASCAR's new multimillion-dollar contract with satellite radio provider Sirius has Nextel Cup car owners asking one big question - Where's the money going? Teams get 25% of the TV revenue, track owners get 65 percent and NASCAR gets 10 percent. There has been a push by some car owners the past three years for NASCAR to provide a more equitable distribution of that $400 million a year, but NASCAR has ignored such entreaties. Now Sirius (partly owned by DaimlerChrysler) has signed a deal to pay NASCAR $27 million a year, according to sources, beginning in 2007. That money will likely go straight into NASCAR's coffers. MRN Radio to Broadcast Live Spanish-language Coverage of Three NASCAR Races: MRN and Radiovisa, a 24-hour Spanish-language radio network will partner to air three NASCAR races in 2005 beginning with this weekend's "Stater Bros. 300" NASCAR Busch Series race and the "Auto Club 500" NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race Feb. 26-27 from California Speedway in Fontana. Radiovisa will also travel to Mexico City for NASCAR's first ever Mexico-based race, the Telcel Motorola Mexico 200, from Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on March 6th, 2005.(2-25-2005)
MRN goes to a 7-second Delay: the Motor Racing Network (MRN), the nation's largest independent sports radio network, announced today that it will institute a seven-second audio delay in its NASCAR coverage, beginning with Sunday's Banquet 400 Nextel Cup race at Kansas Speedway. "The millions of fans that tune in each week can still expect the quality programming from MRN which they are accustomed to," said MRN President David Hyatt. 'However, given the recent scrutiny in the broadcasting industry, we feel this is the right thing to do to protect our hundreds of local affiliates across the county."
