2014 Championship "Tire Specialist" award announced: Champion Tire & Wheel has announced the recipient of the 2014 Sprint Cup "Consistently Smooth" award is; Todd Chafee of Stewart-Haas Racing's #4 car driven by Kevin Harvick. The award recognizes the skill and effort of the team's tire specialist in overseeing the Budweiser #4 teams' tire and wheel program. The tire specialist is an important piece in the performance formula for a championship effort as it requires managing a program of over 2,500 tires and wheels used throughout the full Sprint Cup season. When the call for a pit stop comes, the efforts to find the right combination of tires, wheels, and air pressure is critical in the overall performance of the race car. The lead crystal trophy will be presented to Chafee at the team's shop in of Kannapolis, NC with co-owner Tony Stewart, and Crew Chief Rodney Childers. In addition to the Sprint Cup series recipients, Champion Tire and Wheel will also present JR Motorsports, Will Coats, the Championship tire specialists award for the Chase Elliot driven Nationwide Series team, and Chris Rock, the tire specialist for Thorsport Racing and the Matt Crafton driven Camping World Truck Series Championship effort.(Champion Tire and Wheel PR) (12-5-2014)

NASCAR pit crews help renovate homeless shelter: Some of NASCAR's biggest musclemen are helping make sure a Charlotte homeless shelter gets a much needed makeover-- 40 years in the making. They are used to hard work and heavy lifting, but carrying 200 pound consoles up three flights of stairs is not how Jimmie Johnson and Dale Juniors’ pit-crews usually spend their Mondays. “Normally go in and do some light duty stuff like some yoga and some rehab, but today’s not quite like that,” T.J. Ford says laughing. Instead they are getting in a workout helping with a long overdue makeover at Charlotte's Rescue Mission. “Yeah, you can tell I'm out of breath right now; carrying those 200 pound consoles upstairs takes teamwork-- just like pit-stops.” The men at the Rescue Mission have spent the last two months sleeping in the gym so the 1930s building can be completely redone. Everything at the mission had been here since the 60s. Reverend Tony Marciano runs the mission and says, “The building had really deteriorated over that time; the furniture itself was probably 30, 40 years old, so we really needed to renovate everything.” They're completely re-configuring the men’s dormitory. It was military barracks style, but now they're going to have four guys sleeping in the same area. The idea is to build a bond between the men. Marciano says there’s a good reason. “So if one is thinking of quitting there's three other men that if he has a relationship with that will encourage him to stay within the program. For addicts, finishing something is very difficult.” They’re hoping fresh paint, new floors and furniture will help the men realize they're worth a fresh start. “The old system reinforced the fact that they had messed up their lives; I hate to say that. With the new furniture it says your best days truly are ahead of you,” Marciano said. The men are supposed to be able to move from the gym to the newly redone dorms later this week. The renovations cost $400,000 and come from donations and from part of the non-profit’s operating budget.(NBC Charlotte)(2-5-2014)
Pit Crew Challenge cancelled: NASCAR will not conduct its All-Star Pit Crew Challenge this year as it was unable to land sponsorship for the event. The event, a staple of NASCAR's all-star week since 2005, featured pit crews competing in an arena setting where they would jack cars, change tires and push cars across the arena floor. The results of the pit crew challenge had been used to determine the order that teams selected pit stalls for the all-star race. NASCAR will use qualifying results—just as it does for all regular-season events—to determine pit-stall selection order for the all-star race, which is scheduled for May 18 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Craftsman and then Sprint had sponsored the pit crew challenge throughout the years, but Sprint reallocated its money to sponsor the season-opening exhibition Sprint Unlimited race at Daytona International Speedway. NASCAR officials have said since January that they were looking for a sponsor to continue the event.(Sporting News)(4-10-2013)
#4 SHR Pit Crew Most Valuable Pit Crew Award: Kevin Harvick's #4 Stewart-Haas Racing pit crew is awarded Mechanix Wear's Most Valuable Pit Crew Award at the Myers Brothers Luncheon during NASCAR Champion's Week. Kevin Harvick and his #4 pit crew arrived in high-fashion with the NASCAR Sprint Cup trophy in tow. The veteran Stewart-Haas Racing pit crew led by coach Joe Piette Jr. will take home Mechanix Wear's prestigious MVPC Award and a check for $100,000 for their outstanding performance in Chase.
In its 12th year running, the Mechanix Wear MVPC Award is the longest running and most coveted pit crew award in NASCAR. Every quarter of the Sprint Cup season, NASCAR Crew Chiefs vote for the pit crew contributing the most to the success of their team on race day. "A team might have slower pit stops all day, but if they're making more adjustments to the car or dropping-in more fuel on the last stop and spending extra time in the pit box, but win the race; that is what the Crew Chiefs are looking for," says Ted Abdon, Mechanix Wear's Director or Racing. Each quarter semi-finalist is awarded a check for $5,000 and opportunity to win Mechanix Wear's Most Vaulable Pit Crew award along with a check for $100,000 at the end of the season. The final MVPC Award is voted on at Homestead and serves as a testament to a teams' consistent performance on pit road in the Chase for the championship.
This Stewart-Haas pit crew is no stranger to running in the Chase where the pressure is high to run flawless pit stops. With Tony Stewart out of the Chase, team management made the decision to have members of the #14 pit crew move to the #4 car of Kevin Harvick in the Chase. It was a decision that would help propel Kevin Harvick to the championship. The 2014 Championship is the second one for these guys and the third for Front Tire Changer Ira Jo as he was on Tony’s 2005 Championship team. Front carrier Todd Drakulich, Rear Changer Daniel Smith, Rear Carrier Mike Morneau and Jackman Mike Casto have been members of Tony Stewart's pit crew for many years and all were apart of Tony's 2011 Championship team. Jamie Price Wins 2014 Truck Driver Challenge: Jamie Price, transport driver for the #18 at Joe Gibbs Racing, has won the 2014 NASCAR Championship of the Pilot Flying J Truck Driver Challenge. Price wins his second title in the competition, along with the top prize of $30,000. Upon winning this year’s NASCAR Championship, Price graciously thanked Pilot Flying J for the opportunity, stating, "Pilot Flying J does so much for us, I’m honored to be holding this trophy again!" Price continued, "I knew it was going to be close this year. I was really nervous after the final chicane, but this was worth the wait. There isn’t anything else like this for the truck drivers in our sport, I make sure to only stop at Pilot Flying J to return the support they give us every year."
Price was joined at the podium by the president of Joe Gibbs Racing, JD Gibbs. Gibbs recognized the transport drivers of the Sprint Cup Series, saying, "Transport drivers have one of the hardest jobs in racing, making sure everything is set for each race, and getting to the track safely every week." Gibbs continued, "Congratulations to Jamie for this victory, and to all of you transport drivers who are a huge part of a team’s success."
Finishing in second place was Tom McCrimmon, #20 Joe Gibbs Racing, claiming a prize of $7,500. Greg Sorber, #22 Team Penske, finished in the top-3 for the first time in his career, receiving a check for $2,500. Sorber makes good on his early-year promise to finish in the top-3, while McCrimmon finishes in the top-3 for an astounding seventh year consecutive year. Tom McCrimmon Wins NASCAR Chicane in Bristol: Tom McCrimmon, #20 Joe Gibbs Racing, has won the third NASCAR Chicane of the 2014 Pilot Flying J Truck Driver Challenge. McCrimmon, the 2009 and 2012 NASCAR Champion of the Pilot Flying J Truck Driver Challenge, put his safe driving on display before the weekend's highly anticipated IRWIN Tools Night Race. He tied teammate Jamie Price (#18 Joe Gibbs Racing) for the top spot, but edged price out with a faster time. Ken Pitcher of Tommy Baldwin Racing finished in third place to round out the top-3.
After his victory, an overjoyed McCrimmon exclaimed, "That's all! Everybody wants to win at Bristol. It's exciting when the season starts to wind down and the championship gets closer. Having won this competition two times, I couldn't be more grateful for the benefits and opportunities Pilot Flying J has provided me in the Truck Driver Challenge."
The transport drivers of the Sprint Cup Series are competing for this year's grand prize of $30,000, in addition to a brand new GPS unit. Randy Dorton Hendrick Engine Builder Showdown winners named: A technician trained to service Hondas helped assemble a Chevy NASCAR engine in record time and also won the 13th annual Randy Dorton Hendrick Engine Builder Showdown. Elmer Javier, a Master Certified Technician from Hendrick Honda in Charleston, South Carolina, teamed with Van Nguyen of Hendrick Motorsports to assemble the 358ci Chevy R07.2 engine in a winning time of 21 minutes, 48 seconds. Earlier in qualifying the duo assembled their engine in 21:40, which set a new record for the fuel-injected engines. When the competition featured earlier earlier generation race engines that were carbureted, assembly time was around 17 minutes - an indication that NASCAR engines are getting more complicated. The first time fuel-injected engines were used in competition, winning time was 27:46. Taking second in the competition were Dan Ryan of Gwinnett Place Honda in Duluth, Georgia, who teamed with Scott Vester of Hendrick Motorsports to assemble their engine in 22:53. That was quicker than last year's winning time of 24:38. The showdown pairs 12 master technicians from the Hendrick Automotive Group - which encompasses 94 dealerships around the country - with 12 members of the Hendrick Motorsports engine department. Qualifying rounds are held over two days at the Hendrick Motorsports facilities in Concord, North Carolina. Teams with two best qualifying times then go head-to-head in the final. Teams can be penalized for errors, such as loose bolts. Although the competition has been staged for 13 years, it was renamed a few years ago to honor Randy Dorton, the chief engine builder for Hendrick Motorsports who died in a 2004 plane crash. The engines are similar to but not exact replications of the 900-plus-horsepower versions raced in NASCAR competition.
