Atlanta Motor Speedway to Host Accident Avoidance Workshops: Atlanta Motor Speedway will play host to a series of Accident Avoidance Workshops in November and December, providing student drivers the opportunity to simulate emergency situations often overlooked in driver’s education courses. The Accident Avoidance Workshop is a two-part program designed to prepare student drivers to respond to emergency situations. Each participant will attend a 150-minute classroom session, followed by a four and a half hour session of emergency driving simulation the following weekend. Each student-parent team participates in their own vehicle, allowing young drivers to experience their own car’s capabilities. Parents sit in the passenger seat, as the driver experiences first hand the effects of losing control, distracted driving and insufficient following distance in a controlled environment. The program costs just $195 for seven total hours of training and $10 will be donated to each participating student’s respective school’s PTSA. Due to limited classroom availability in the Accident Avoidance Workshops, interested students are encouraged to act now. For more information, dates and times or to register for the Accident Avoidance Workshops, call (770) 971-0571 or visit www.accidentavoidanceworkships.org. Accident Avoidance Workshops Dates are scheduled for 11/18, 11/21-21; 12/16, 12/19-20.(AMS)(11-8-2009)

Race track planned in New Orleans area: High-performance automobile enthusiasts, prepare to start your engines. But first you'll have to loosen your purse strings. A $30 million, 5-mile private racetrack planned for Avondale [Louisiana] promises to help Corvette and Porsche owners get in touch with their inner speed demons. But membership in the country-club style track won't be cheap. Initiation fees will be $35,000, with annual dues set at $4,000. Scheduled to open next fall, the NOLA Motorsports Park is to be built in three phases on 430 acres south of the TPC Louisiana golf course off U.S. 90. Developer Laney Chouest, a retired doctor from Galliano who now lives in New Orleans, said the track will have several high-end amenities, including a clubhouse and upscale condominiums built over garages dubbed "Garage Mahals." He said the twisting track will host small races among drivers in car clubs but not large spectator events such as NASCAR races. The first phase calls for a 2-mile winding course with a 4,000-foot straight-away. Plans call for two additional courses that can be joined with the first to form a 5-mile track, which Chouest said would be the longest in the country. Chouest said EMTs will be on site at the Avondale track, which will have no walls to enable motorists who go off course to come to a stop without crashing.(Times-Picayune)(9-7-2009)

Atlanta Motor Speedway Paints Inside Stripe Yellow: Atlanta Motor Speedway has painted the track’s inside racing groove stripe yellow in an effort to aid drivers in spotting the line during the Speedway’s first full weekend of NASCAR night racing. In addition to the change in color, the new paint included reflective glass beads, making the stripe more noticeable under the lights. After receiving input from Sprint Cup drivers Kurt Busch and John Andretti urging him to paint the line from white to yellow, Atlanta Motor Speedway president Ed Clark acted on the advice and changed the stripe’s color preceding this weekend’s Degree V12 300 Nationwide Series race and Pep Boys Auto 500 Sprint Cup Series race. “Kurt [Busch] and I talked following our most recent Goodyear Tire Test and he expressed a concern that the line was difficult to see at night,” said Clark, who also worked at Bristol and Lowe’s Motor Speedway when those facilities added night racing. “John [Andretti] and I discussed the concern on the phone and he shared the sentiment, so I knew this was a necessary change for our first NASCAR Sprint Cup night race.”(AMS)(9-4-2009)
