Napa’s Goines Enjoys Ride of Lifetime at Infineon: Napa’s Howard Goines took the ride of a lifetime on Friday at Infineon Raceway. Goines, who is 88 and battling prostate and bone cancer, piloted his newly-restored 1929 Model A Ford around the world-famous road course, marking the first time he has been behind the wheel in six months. “I never thought this would happen. To be able to drive around the track three times, that’s a lifetime memory,” said Goines, a Bay Area resident for more than 65 years. “The doctor said I couldn’t drive, but I guess I proved him wrong.” Goines began restoring the Model A three years ago, but was unable to finish the project because of illness. Good friends Larry Aldrich, Jerry Belden, Ken Midile, George Smith, Randy Stegman and his grandson, Jordan Heath, completed the restoration. Once complete, Heath decided to contact Infineon Raceway to see if his grandfather could tour the road course. It was a total surprise for Goines, as he came through the front gate at Infineon Raceway on Friday morning. “I’ve been around these cars for 45 years, and it was really nice to get out here on the track and see what it’s like,” said Goines, who has restored more than 10 Ford Model A machines over the years. “I can’t believe my grandson helped set this up. What a great surprise.” In all, four of Goines’ restored Model As paraded around the track, driven by friends and family. More than 15 people also came out to watch Goines fulfill his dream. It was truly an emotional day. “My grandfather taught me how to drive a stick shift in a Model A when I was younger, so to be here with him and ride around the track with him was really special,” Heath said. Goines, who was born in Spiro, Okla., served in the Army-Air Force and spent most of his professional career as an iron worker and finally at Dymo Industries. He has been married to his wife, Elsie, for 67 years.(Infineon Raceway)(11-6-2009)

The Toyota Camry Hybrid pace car made its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut at Lowe’s Motor Speedway last month when it became the first hybrid vehicle to serve as the ‘official’ pace car for an entire race. Before being approved to serve as the pace car, the Camry Hybrid had to pass a NASCAR-mandated performance test at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, a one-and-a-half-mile oval located in Charlotte, N.C. In order to qualify as a pace car, the vehicle was required to reach speeds close to 100 miles per hour from a stand-by position near the exit of pit road to the time it reaches the exit of turn two, a distance of approximately one-quarter-mile. - U.S. Coast Guard, UPS, David Ragan Provide Ceremonial Delivery of Trophy: Infineon Raceway received a special delivery on Wednesday, thanks to UPS and the United States Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco, the “Guardians of the Golden Gate.” The Coast Guard arranged for safe delivery of the winner’s trophy for this weekend’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. A Coast Guard MH65C Dolphin helicopter, departing from an unknown location in the Bay Area, landed on the road course on Turn 11 with the trophy safely stored. From there, two raceway handlers, dressed in black suits and wearing white gloves, and David Ragan, driver of the #6 UPS Ford, carried the trophy to an awaiting UPS Truck. The truck then drove to the Wine Country Winner’s Circle, where the two handlers and Ragan safely placed the trophy on a wine barrel after walking a red carpet. Mission accomplished. The Coast Guard will return on Sunday as part of the ceremonial fly-by moments before the green flag is dropped on the Toyota/Save Mart 350.(Infineon Raceway)(6-18-2009)
- Infineon Raceway Goes “Green” for NASCAR Weekend: The Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend at Infineon Raceway, June 19-21, will definitely have a “green” feel to it this year. The raceway has featured a comprehensive recycling program since 2004, but the Sonoma Valley facility has taken things to a new level in 2009 with a number of initiatives. Below is an outline of the efforts for the 2009 race season at Infineon Raceway, including the Toyota/Save Mart 350 on Father’s Day weekend:
Recycling Since 2004, Infineon Raceway has recycled more than 73 tons (147,524 pounds) of materials. The tonnage equates to slightly more than the total weight of a full NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starting field – 43 stock cars. The raceway has been recognized by the State of California Department, Division of Recycling for its recycling efforts. Infineon Raceway also works with Safety-Kleen at its NASCAR and NHRA events to recycle used oil products. Safety-Kleen refines approximately 180,000,000 gallons of used motor oil each year.
Mowing Green Nearly 3,000 sheep will continue to call Infineon Raceway home in 2009. They will provide an invaluable service, helping to maintain the grasses and fire lanes around the facility. The raceway formed a relationship with Rocky Mountain Wooly Weeders in 2008, which provides the sheep. The sheep live on property full-time and are tended by two shepherds.
Clean Green Clean facilities are very important at Infineon Raceway, and to that end, 90-percent of the janitorial products we use in 2009 will be environmentally-friendly.
Water Conservation Infineon Raceway will continue to conserve and reduce its demand for water in 2009:
* Waterless urinals in restrooms, which reduce water consumption by 36%.
* The raceway is home to an independent water system and sewage treatment plant. The raceway is not dependent on the county or city for its water needs.
* All landscaping is watered with recycled and reclaimed water.
Rubber to Roads The raceway will send old tires to be recycled in 2009 so that they can be used to help create rubber-based asphalt, playground padding and other purposes.
Cardboard Recycling Using its own cardboard baler, Infineon Raceway will recycle more than 3,000 pounds of cardboard each month in 2009. These efforts will help greatly to reduce the number of debris boxes sent to landfills.
Owls Welcome Infineon Raceway will feature 15 owl boxes around its property in 2009 to encourage the birds to nest and hunt for gophers and other rodents around the facility. One family of Barn Owls can eat 30-to-40 rodents a night, which helps the raceway eliminate the need for pesticides and other poisons in controlling pests.(Infineon Raceway)(6-18-2009)

An added bonus is a massive scavenger hunt for blue-and-gold specially-marked lug nuts that will be hidden on the road course. Fans can enter the track from six locations around the road course: the north end of the Main Grandstand; Turn 1; Turn 2 hospitality area; Turn 7; Turn 9 (at the south end of the terrace); and Turn 11. Track officials will drop the lug nuts around the track prior to opening the gates for the Track Walk, and the people who find those lug nuts will be treated to great prizes, including a big-screen TV, Save Mart Supermarkets gift certificate and 2010 Toyota/Save Mart 350 race tickets. - Infineon Raceway Recycles More Than 17 Tons: Infineon Raceway has reaffirmed its position as the recycling leader in the motor-sports industry, collecting more than 17 tons of recyclable materials at its major events during the 2008 racing season. In all, the raceway collected 34,568 pounds of materials at its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, IndyCar® Series and AMA Superbike Series event weekends. That brings the total to more than 73 tons (147,524 pounds) of recyclable materials since the inception of the program in 2004. The tonnage equates to slightly more than the total weight of a full NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starting field – 43 stock cars.
The breakdown for the 2008 motor-racing season included:
· 18,928 pounds of glass (35,768 glass bottles)
· 13,366 pounds of plastic bottles (179,639 plastic bottles)
· 2,274 pounds of aluminum cans (66,628 cans)
· Total: 34,568 pounds (282,035 beverage containers)
George Mutter, owner of Environmental Event Management Group, based in San Diego, has managed the program at Infineon Raceway since its inception in 2004 and has 27 years of experience in the recycling business. “This year was really one of our best yet. We added about 20-percent more recycling containers to the facility, and we had additional staff collecting the recycling to help be sure we’re getting as much material as possible,” said Mutter. “We collected about 10-percent more than we did last year, which is a great improvement. Anheuser-Busch still supports us with bins and recycling bags, and they’re a great, positive partner on this program.”
In addition, Safety-Kleen Systems, Inc., which is headquartered in Texas, provides oil recycling and re-refining services to Infineon Raceway, as well as 64 other racetracks/drag strips around the country. Everything that Safety-Kleen collects during an event at Infineon Raceway during its NASCAR, IndyCar and NHRA events, such as motor oil, gasoline or antifreeze, is eventually put back into a usable product. Safety-Kleen makes green work. "The Green movement is not new to us. We've been Green since 1968, when the company started,” said Drew Patey, motorsports manager for Safety-Kleen. “We’re proud to refine over 300 million gallons of used oil a year.”(Infineon Raceway PR)(11-21-2008)
