  • Pontiac: Jeff Chew, marketing manager for General Motors' stock-car racing program, said Pontiac won't be recruiting teams to convert to Pontiac next year, but that doesn't mean some teams won't do that. Instead, Chew said Pontiac will concentrate on working more closely with the teams remaining on the roster(That's Racin')(3-5-2000)

  • Happy Hour Troubles: the #3-Dale Earnhardt and #31-Mike Skinner cars had ignition box problems early in Happy Hour practice, ironically both at the same time in the session. Both got repaired and were out on the track later in practice(ESPN2 Coverage)(3-5-2000)

  • Baywatch and the #26 BGN team UPDATE 2: the television show "Baywatch" has signed on to sponsor Bobby Hamilton Jr.'s Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the Busch Series. Actor David Hasselhoff(thought he quit the show?), star of "Baywatch," is expected to be at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday to watch Hamilton(Las Vegas Sun)(3-3-2000) -- UPDATE and a rumor: Actor David Hasselhoff, who previously was involved as a part owner and sponsor of open-wheel cars, said Saturday his Baywatch Restaurants and Night Clubs signed a three-year agreement to sponsor the Busch Series car of Bobby Hamilton Jr.(SpeedNet/AP) -- am hearing this is a deal in which would bring the #26 Allcar/Hamilton team to Cup in 2001. This sponsorship was rumored heree in the past to be going to the #2-Rusty Wallace team as an assoicate or to a possible new Wayne Burdette Cup team as Burdette is looking to get back into Cup after the failed attempt to buy Cale Yarborough's Cup team a year ago(3-5-2000)

  • Wheaties returns... hearing John Andretti will run a Wheaties paint scheme at The Winston with the #43 Pontiac. Wheaties is of course made by General Mills, a primary sponsor for the team(3-4-2000)

  • Bodine Out and About: Geoffrey Bodine, injured and shaken in a crash at the Daytona Truck race two weeks ago, will be allowed out of therapeutic confinement this weekend and plans to try to make some personal and sponsor appearances(SpeedVison) One is at the SunCom Store in Russellville, AR from 12 to 2pm.(3-4-2000)

  • Top 10's: #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. and #28-Ricky Rudd are the only drivers who have qualified in the top 10 for all three CUP races in 2000. On top of that Ricky Rudd has quailified on the front row for three straight races with the pole at Vegas and 2nd at Daytona and the Rock(3-4-2000)

  • Rudd's Crew: Ricky Rudd 's pit crew had a few recent changes. Front tire changer Darren Wolfe missed last week's race at Rockingham because he cut tendons in his hand at the team's shop before that race. He'll be out several races. Raymond Fox, who was the rear tire changer, has moved to changing the front tires. Bryan Robertson, who works in the shop, also will change front tires. The new group struggled a bit last week but Rudd still finished sixth(Roanoke Times)(3-4-2000)

  • Sat AM Practice wreck: During practice, Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon, tangled on the track, causing slight damage to both cars. Earnhardt's car had some damage to the nose. Gordon scratched the wall. Both cars were to be repaired(SpeedVision)(3-4-2000)

  • Provisional Streaks CORRECTION: after further review, I found some errors in my calcualtions. Prior to the 1998 season, four plus a champs provisional was used, plus some of the smaller tracks like Bristol, Martinsville and North Wilksboro only started 36-40 cars. So lets redo the math here: in 1999 only three drivers did not use a provisional start. #24-Jeff Gordon, #43-John Andretti and #88-Dale Jarrett. Andretti will use his first at Las Vegas since Rockingham in Oct 1997, a streak of 71 races (2 in 1997, 33 in 1998, 34 in 1999 and 2 in 2000). Jeff Gordon has not used a provisional since Talladega in May 1994, so he has a streak of 186 straight races without using a provisional(Not 71 as mentioned before, he started 37th at Atlanta in Nov 1997 but that was when there where only 5 provisionals in a 43 car field). Dale Jarrett has a similar streak going. Jarrett's last provisional was taken in the 1994 season at the spring Bristol race, but he failed to make the 1994 Fall North Wilkesboro race with the #18 Joe Gibbs Chevy, so he has a streak of 187 races, but not straight, Jarrett's streak since making all the races stands at 168. I think, I have it right this time. The #88 Robert Yates Racing team has never taken a provisional in the 136 races it has competed(3 including Ernie Irvan in 1995), my apologies for the errors(3-4-2000)

  • Champion Provisional Questions: Why did DW get the Past Champion Provisional and not Bill Elliott? As explained on my Provisional Status page, after 2nd round is finished, NASCAR places 37-42 by owners points, then from the drivers left not in the race, if a past champion is still not in the race, the most recent is awarded the 43rd and final provisional. If no past champion is left the 43rd spot goes to the next driver/team in the owners points standings(as seen on the Provisional Status Page)(3-4-2000)

  • Wind Tunnel Info: Confused about Monday's wind-tunnel results? -- in light of Sunday's Rockingham finish -- so are most crew chiefs and NASCAR officials here. Dale Jarrett finished a lap down in fifth in a Ford, but his Taurus won the wind-tunnel testing. Bobby Labonte's Pontiac lost in the wind tunnel after winning on the track at the Rock. And Dale Earnhardt's Chevy finished runner-up in both competitions. Jarrett's #88 Ford was 80 drag-horsepower better than Earnhardt's #3 Chevy in the wind tunnel. But that was with wind blowing 200mph. At 145 mph -- the average around Rockingham -- it would be 35 drag-horsepower, out of about 1,000. See full story at PitNow by Mike Mulhern(3-4-2000)

  • Did Ya Know? that Dave Marcis has a little known distinction amongst the present CUP drivers? He is the only current driver remaining to have run a NASCAR Winston Cup (Grand National) dirt track race. See full story at Stooge's NASCAR Site(3-4-2000)

Rumors have persisted that Rockingham and Darlington could be in danger of losing a race if NASCAR officials move race dates to other tracks.
