UPDATE THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: NASCAR announced today that R.J. Reynolds, whose 33-year sponsorship of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series helped elevate the premier stock car series to one of the most popular sports in the United States, will be officially recognized for its contribution to the sport through the "Victory Lap" tribute program. The "Victory Lap" tribute will recognize drivers who captured a championship during R.J. Reynolds' sponsorship tenure at designated tracks throughout the remainder of the 2003 season. Among the highlights of the tribute will be special paint-schemed cars of selected champions that will showcase the "Victory Lap" logo that honors R.J. Reynolds, which will conclude its relationship with NASCAR as title sponsor at the end of this year.
The Tribute begins at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 23 before the Sharpie 500, lasts through the NASCAR Winston Cup season's final race, the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 16, and includes special activities at the NASCAR Winston Cup Champion's banquet in New York in early December.
All along, NASCAR fans will be brought special moments in NASCAR Winston Cup history on exciting radio broadcasts of NASCAR Winston Cup races, and will read about great NASCAR Winston Cup battles in newspapers across America. NASCAR Winston Cup Scene is planning a commemorative NASCAR Winston Cup edition and special features, while other NASCAR dedicated media will run photos, statistics, graphics and other information as a fan's keepsake of the Winston era.
"RJR has been the perfect partner in helping NASCAR become one of the most popular sports in America," NASCAR President Mike Helton said. "They deserve and have the gratitude of the entire NASCAR industry, and we are proud to pay tribute to everything they have done for our sport."
Helton, accompanied by Ned Leary, president of Sports Marketing Enterprises at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and an impressive assembly of series champions, made the announcement at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, site of Sunday's Brickyard 400 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race. The NASCAR Winston Cup champions on hand consisted of legendary Richard Petty (1964, '67, '71-'72, '74-75, '79), Benny Parsons (1973), Terry Labonte (1984, '96), Bill Elliott (1988), Rusty Wallace (1989), Jeff Gordon (1995, ''97-'98, '01), Dale Jarrett (1999), Bobby Labonte (2000) and Tony Stewart (2002).
"We're humbled that NASCAR has chosen to celebrate our 33-year partnership in such a significant manner," Leary said. "I'm sure the ˜Victory Lap will capture not only the fan's interest, but also the rich history of the last 33 years. On behalf of all the people from Sports Marketing Enterprises who have contributed to the NASCAR Winston Cup program, let me emphasize the pride we have in our longstanding relationship with our partners at NASCAR. They've worked with us as the series sponsor, but more importantly, welcomed us as part of their extended family."
"The Victory Lap" tribute will honor a series champion or a pairing of a former and active one during pre-race ceremonies at designated tracks during the remainder of the season. The honored driver will take a ceremonial parade lap prior to the start of the race in a specially designed "Victory Lap" race car emblazoned with the "Victory Lap" logo. Collectible die-cast models of each car carrying a special paint scheme and "Victory Lap" logo will also be produced, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Victory Junction Gang Camp and the T. Wayne Robertson Foundation benefiting Brenner Children's Hospital. Additional details of the comprehensive program honoring R. J. Reynolds and Winston will be announced in coming weeks.
The "Victory Lap" tribute will kick off with Wallace and the late Alan Kulwicki, the 1992 NASCAR Winston Cup champion, being honored Aug. 23 prior to the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Other tributes scheduled are for Cale Yarborough (Darlington, Aug. 31); Bobby Allison and Terry Labonte (Talladega, Sept. 28); Dale Earnhardt and Gordon (Charlotte, Oct. 11); Darrell Waltrip (Martinsville, Oct. 19); Elliott (Atlanta, Oct. 26); Jarrett (Phoenix, Nov. 2), Parsons and Bobby Labonte (Rockingham, Nov. 9); and Petty and Stewart (Homestead, Nov. 16).(NASCAR PR)(8-1-2003)

In what promises to be one of the most memorable moments of the "Victory Lap" tour, Gordon will drive a specially painted #24 Dupont Chevrolet alongside Childress and the #3 during the pre-race festivities. Gordon's "Victory Lap" car will also be on display.(LMS PR)(8-11-2003) UPDATE: Richard Childress unveiled the specially painted #3 “Victory Lap” Chevrolet Monte Carlo Tuesday afternoon at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. In what promises to be one of the most memorable moments of the “Victory Lap” tribute program recently detailed by NASCAR, Childress will drive the No. 3 during pre-race festivities for Lowe’s Motor Speedway’s UAW-GM Quality 500 on Saturday night, Oct. 11. The “Victory Lap” tribute will recognize drivers who captured a NASCAR Winston Cup championship during R.J. Reynolds’ 33-year sponsorship tenure. The tribute will take place at designated tracks, including Lowe’s Motor Speedway, throughout the remainder of the season, Winston’s last as title sponsor of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. Offering a fitting tribute to Winston, the Lowe’s Motor Speedway portion of the “Victory Lap” tribute will mark the first on-track appearance of the #3 car since the death of seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt in the 2001 Daytona 500. The special No. 3 Chevrolet Monte Carlo unveiled by Childress features the legendary Earnhardt black along the bottom with silver dominating the hood, roof and rear deck lid. The “Victory Lap” logo, honoring Winston, appears several places on the car. Earnhardt won five NASCAR Winston Cup Series events at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and was the first three-time winner of The Winston, NASCAR’s annual all-star race. Four-time NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Jeff Gordon will represent “active” NASCAR Winston Cup champions in the UAW-GM Quality 500 “Victory Lap.” He will drive a specially painted #24 Dupont Chevrolet alongside Childress and the #3 during a pre-race parade lap.(LMS PR)(8-12-2003)
More Victory Lap Unveilings: Martinsville Speedway, North Carolina Speedway and NASCAR are combining for an exciting media event at the NASCAR Café in Greensboro, NC., on Tuesday, August 19. Two former Winston Cup champions, Darrell Waltrip and Benny Parsons, will be unveiling their “Victory Lap” tribute cars at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19 at the NASCAR Café. The “Victory Lap” tribute will honor Winston Cup champions during RJR’s 33-year tenure in the sport at various tracks through the end of the season. After the official unveiling, Waltrip, Parsons and officials from both Martinsville Speedway and North Carolina Speedway will be available for photo opportunities and interviews.(Martinsville Speedway PR)(8-16-2003)
Benny to take a lap: Former NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion Benny Parsons unveiled a specially painted #72 "Victory Lap" Chevy to be driven during pre-race activities at North Carolina Speedway [Rockingham]. As part of the "Victory Lap" tribute program for long-time series sponsor R.J. Reynolds' Winston brand, Parsons #72 car will lead the field during pre-race festivities prior to the November 9 Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400 at North Carolina Speedway. The "Victory Lap" tribute will honor NASCAR Winston Cup Series champions during R.J. Reynolds' 33-year tenure in the sport at various tracks through the end of the season. The 2003 NASCAR season is the final for Winston's title sponsorship of NASCAR's top division, which they have held since 1971. The No. 72 Chevrolet unveiled by Parsons and Chris Browning, North Carolina Speedway's Executive Vice-President & General Manager, features Winston's signature red and silver paint scheme with "Victory Lap" logos commemorating the tribute to Winston. Parsons clinched the 1973 Winston Cup championship at "The Rock" in a car owned by then track President, L.G. DeWitt, during the annual fall event. He has scored five top-5's and eleven top-10's in 30 starts at North Carolina Speedway. "L.G. DeWitt loved the Sandhills of North Carolina and wanted that area represented in NASCAR," Parsons said. "We never won there, and that will go down as one of my biggest disappointments in Winston Cup; not pulling off a win at Rockingham, because we wanted it so bad." Bobby Labonte, the 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Champion will represent "active" NASCAR Winston Cup champions in the "Victory Lap" tribute at North Carolina Speedway. Labonte will drive a specially painted #18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet alongside the #72 Chevrolet during a pre-race parade lap.(NCS Site)(8-20-2003)
Darrell Waltrip To Make Tribute Lap At Martinsville In #11: For more than a decade, Darrell Waltrip’s dominance of Martinsville Speedway was so great, he should have had his own key to the front gate. As impressive as his 11 Winston Cup wins are on the tight, difficult .526-mile oval, it really doesn’t completely illustrate his Martinsville prowess. Waltrip had 27 career top-five finishes at Martinsville and 31 career top-10 finishes, both track records. His eight Martinsville poles are a record. Four of those poles came in the Advance Auto Parts 500 and four in the SUBWAY 500. Not surprisingly, he holds the track record for most poles for each race.
All those lofty numbers and Waltrip’s love of the Virginia track is the reason NASCAR selected the three-time Winston Cup champion to display his Winston Victory Lap Tribute car at Martinsville. He will take a ceremonial lap in a replica of the #11 Chevrolet he drove for Junior Johnson prior to the running of the SUBWAY 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at Martinsville on October 19. R.J. Reynolds’ sponsorship of the Winston Cup Series comes to an end after the 2003 season, and NASCAR will honor the longtime partnership with the Victory Lap Tribute. The tribute will recognize drivers, active and retired, who won championships during Winston’s 33-year sponsorship of the series.
“It’s only fitting that Darrell Waltrip will be running his Winston Victory Lap Tribute car at Martinsville Speedway,” said Clay Campbell, Martinsville Speedway’s president. “For a good portion of Winston’s involvement in this sport, Darrell dominated at our track. When the green flag fell, it was like it was Darrell Waltrip and then everybody else.” Waltrip first raced at Martinsville in the early 1970s. He immediately fell in love with H.Clay Earles’ showplace. “To us drivers, Martinsville was always appealing,” Waltrip said recently. “It was the Daytona of short tracks. Even back in the 1970s it paid $50,000 to win.” Waltrip picked up his first Martinsville win in the spring of 1976. And it was then he discovered another reason he loved Martinsville. “It has the sport’s most unique trophy, the grandfather clocks,” said Waltrip. “I have 11 of those babies and I am extremely proud of each win they represent. A great purse and the sport’s best trophy … that’s why Martinsville is a driver’s delight.” Good seats remain for the SUBWAY 500 and may be purchased by calling 877.RACE.TIX or by visiting the speedway’s website, www.martinsvillespeedway.com.(8-21-2003)
Yarborough unveils Victory Lap car: Cale Yarborough and Ricky Craven unveiled new cars at Darlington Raceway. Yarborough's, painted in the familiar gold-and-white colors of his famous #11, will be part of a prerace "Victory Lap" tribute to longtime series sponsor Winston. Craven's displayed a special #32 "Give Kids The World" paint scheme for the Southern 500 on August 31st.(The State).(8-21-2003)
Rusty to do Polish Victory Lap before Bristol race: #2-Rusty Wallace is set to make yet another Polish victory lap at Bristol this Saturday night in his Miller Lite Team Penske Dodge. As the "kick-off" for the recently announced "Victory Lap" program (where still-active past champions are paired with another inactive or late champ), the NASCAR tribute to long-time series sponsor R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Wallace is paired with his late pal Kulwicki. Part of the pre-race activity will feature Wallace making the lap in reverse direction around the track. His Miller Lite Dodge will carry a special one-race commemorative color scheme in this weekend's Sharpie 500.(Tom Roberts PR), the #7 Kulwick car will be driven it's lap by Jimmy Hensley.(8-21-2003)
Why no coverage of the #7 Victory Lap car? UPDATE: been asked by many, I have NO idea, and was disappointed myself that TNT didn't show Alan Kulwicki's #7 Victory Lap car driven around the track at Bristol by Jimmy Hensley. PRN Radio interviewed Alan's parent's before the race broadcast, it was nice to hear them, it was their first trip to Bristol since Alan passed away in 1993. To voice your complaints, don't email me but let TNT know, see contact info on my Media Contact page.(8-26-2003) UPDATE: on Fox Sports Nets Totally NASCAR, towards the end of the show Wednesday, they showed the #7 Victory Lap Ford [looked like a 1999 version Taurus] and interviewed Alan Kulwicki's father, Gerry Kulwicki.(8-27-2003) THE RESON from NASCAR.com: "The ceremony was held almost two hours before the green flag. We asked NASCAR if they would hold the ceremony just before the pace laps so that we could air it and they refused. It was not like it was the No. 11 car out there. It was held outside our race window and the stands were more than half empty when it was done, so we decided against it."(8-28-2003)
Victory Lap tribute continues at Darlington: Only one driver in NASCAR Winston Cup history has won more than two consecutive series championships. That driver, Cale Yarborough, holds the record with three, capturing consecutive championships from 1976-78. On Sunday, Yarborough's achievement will be honored at Darlington Raceway as part of the Victory Lap tribute to longtime series sponsor R.J. Reynolds and the NASCAR Winston Cup era (1971-2003), prior to the start of the Mountain Dew Southern 500. Darlington is one of many tracks Yarborough ruled during his 31-year career. But it also happens to be the only NASCAR Winston Cup track just down the road from his Sardis, S.C. home. Growing up in his native South Carolina as a boy, Yarborough would sneak under the Darlington Raceway fence to catch a glimpse of the first heroes of the sport. It was there he became captivated by stock car racing and, later, earned his reputation as one of the greatest drivers to wheel around the 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval known as the track too tough to tame. But tame it he did, scoring five victories between 1968, his first Darlington win, and 1982, his fifth and final win. Fans of the sport will have a chance to salute Yarborough on Sunday, as he once again takes the wheel of the No. 11 car he helped make famous for a special Victory Lap around Darlington Raceway. It will be a fitting tribute to one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers and a three-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion. AND On Friday at Darlington Raceway, 1983 NASCAR Winston Cup champion Bobby Allison, long-time leader of the racing "Alabama Gang," will unveil a special "Victory Lap" tribute car honoring his NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship and four career victories at Talladega Superspeedway. Allison will be joined at an 11:00am/et press conference by Talladega Superspeedway President Grant Lynch for the unveiling, and will participate in pre-race festivities prior to the start of the EA Sports 500 at Talladega on Sept. 28.(NASCAR PR) - note: unless things change, I am told NBC/TNT will not cover the Victory Laps.(8-27-2003)
Bobby Allison to take 'Victory Lap' at Talladega: Fans of the NASCAR Winston Cup era were treated Friday to a sneak preview of a special Talladega Superspeedway "Victory Lap" tribute to Bobby Allison. The long-time leader of the famed "Alabama Gang" unveiled his red, white, silver and gold #22 Victory Lap car at Darlington Raceway following a press conference where he was joined by Talladega Superspeedway President Grant Lynch and NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter.
The three long-time NASCAR fixtures reminisced about Allisons glory days as leader of the Alabama NASCAR racing contingent that also included Allison's brother Donnie (who also was in attendance), sons Davey and Clifford Allison and fellow Alabamans Neil Bonnett and Red Farmer. Together, they amassed 10 wins on the high banks at Talladega. In addition to Bobby's four wins, Davey scored three victories, Donnie won twice and Bonnett once. "It's incredible what the Allisons did to promote Talladega Superspeedway," Hunter said. "The Alabama Gang is part of the Talladega tradition, and it's only fitting that we recognize Bobby as we salute our partners at Winston."
Lynch agreed, saying: "The Allisons have always meant so much to us throughout the years at Talladega and they're still there for us. To pair Winston, which enjoyed the longest running event sponsor in motorsports as the title sponsor of the Winston 500 for 30 years, with Bobby Allison and the Alabama Gang at NASCAR's most competitive race track is a fitting tribute."
"Donnie and I went to Alabama lots and lots of years ago and Winston added so much to our sport for all of us," Allison said. "We represented Alabama but we also represented NASCAR and Winston from day one. We really enjoyed doing that and the success we had along the way."
Allison will celebrate his Winston Cup career and 1983 Winston Cup championship during pre-race festivities for the EA Sports 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sept. 28.(NASCAR PR)(8-30-2003)
Victory Lap come to Charlotte; Gordon, Earnhardt honored: Saturday will be special and memorable for NASCAR fans as the NASCAR Victory Lap tribute program comes to Lowe’s Motor Speedway, and will honor the late seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Dale Earnhardt, and four-time champion Jeff Gordon in its Saturday ceremony. The familiar #3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet driven by Earnhardt will return to the race track, driven pre-race around LMS by Earnhardt’s long-time car owner and friend, Richard Childress. Gordon is on his way to legendary status as well, with four NASCAR Winston Cup Championships and 61 victories to his credit. Driving the #24 DuPont Chevrolet for Rick Hendrick, Gordon picked up his first career win at Lowe's Motor Speedway at the 1994 Coca-Cola 600 in his second NASCAR Winston Cup season.(NASCAR PR)(10-8-2003)
Victory Lap tribute honors “Awesome Bill” at Atlanta: Bill Elliott will close out an impressive month of October by being honored in the NASCAR Victory Lap tribute prior to Sunday’s Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500. The program, honoring R. J. Reynolds and past NASCAR Winston Cup champions, will make its sixth stop of the season during pre-race ceremonies, where Elliott will run a few laps in his #9 Dodge Dealers/Victory Lap Dodge. With two recent top-five finishes, including a second at Kansas Speedway and a fourth at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Elliott sits 10th in NASCAR’s Top 10. Last Sunday’s ninth-place finish at Martinsville continued his autumn upswing. The 1988 NASCAR Winston Cup champion, Elliott has 43 career victories. His most recent were back-to-back wins in 2002, which included the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.(NASCAR PR)(10-23-2003)
Benny and Bobby Victory Lap at the Rock: Victory Lap Tribute: Prior to the race, Bobby Labonte and Benny Parsons will be part of a special "Victory Lap" tribute to honor NASCAR Winston Cup Series champions during R.J. Labonte will represent "active" NASCAR Winston Cup champions in the "Victory Lap" tribute. He will drive a specially painted No. 18

The "Victory Lap" tribute recognizes drivers who captured a championship during R.J. Reynolds' sponsorship tenure at designated tracks. Parsons was the 1972 Winston Cup Champion and will drive a replica of the car he drove that year. In addition, Parsons has invited his 1972 pit crew to join him in Sunday's festivities.(TNT PR)(11-7-2003)
