No big surprise that the #43 led the was with 198 wins (Richard Petty won races using the #41 and #42 and Lee Petty actually won with the #43 first).
But what number is 2nd? #11
Ned Jarrett, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Bill Elliott, Denny Hamlin are among drivers winning using the #11.

First win for #4 since 1998: Kasey Kahne's win in the 2011 Kobalt Tools 500 at Phoenix International Raceway was the 45th ever win for a car #4 and the first since Bobby Hamilton won at Martinsville, VA running the #4 on April 20, 1998.(11-13-2011)
Win 197 for #11: #11-Denny Hamlin's win in the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway was car #11's 197th win in the Sprint Cup Series. Second all-time in Sprint Cup Series history for a car number. #43, which has 198 wins in 2296 Sprint Cup races is the leader, 3rd is the #3 at 97 wins.(6-19-2011)
First win for #78 since 1955: Regan Smith's win in the 2011 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway was the 5th ever win for a car #78 and the first since Jim Paschal won at Columbia, SC running the #78 on July 9, 1955.(5-7-2011)

Martin sets wins in a season for a #5 car: Mark Martin made 2009 the most successful season ever [in term of wins] for the #5 car in terms of wins, Martin won five races in 2009, the most ever by the #5 car. 1st win for the car #14 since 1968: with #14-Tony Stewart's win at Pocono on 6/7/2009, it is the first time the #14 has visited victory lane in the Sprint Cup Series since Bobby Allison won at Montogomery, AL on Decemer 8, 1968. It is the 27th time a car with the #14 has won in the series. The first time the #14 won was in 1951 with Fonty Flock. The #43 has the most with 198 [Richard Petty didn't win all his races in the #43] followed by the #11 with 184 [besides Hamlin others who have won in #11 include Junior Johnson, Ned Jarrett, Mario Andretti, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltip, Bill Elliott among many others].(6-7-2009)

#07 is the 100th car number to win: when Clint Bowyer won the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway on Sunday, Sept 16, 2007, it was the first Cup win ever for a car number 07, being the 100th different car number [as far as I can calculate] that has won in the Cup series. History of the #8: in part from an ESPN.com article: 82 drivers have run the #8, beginning with Billy Carden, from Mableton, Ga., started third and finished 15th in NASCAR's second-ever Strictly Stock (now Nextel Cup) race, run on the grueling 4.15-mile beach and road course in Daytona. The #8 has run a total of 1,264 Cup races, steered by two Jacks, three Joes, six Dicks, and guys named Possum, Pop, Tiny, Skip, Banjo, Elmo, Bud, L.D., J.D., E.J. and D.K. Earnhardt is the third Junior to drive the car and isn't even the first Dale Earnhardt. Senior made one start at Charlotte in '75. Dale Jr. is not the racer responsible for the majority of the #8's visits to Victory Lane. That distinction belongs to Little Joe Weatherly, considered by some to be the most talented driver ever to own a NASCAR license and by most to be among the greatest partyers in American history. Weatherly slipped into the #8 in 1961, having already won four races with other teams and numbers as he bounced from team to team. But it was in car owner Bud Moore's Pontiac that Weatherly became a legend. From 1961 to '63, he started 109 races in the #8, earning 20 wins, 16 poles, and back-to-back championships in '62 and '63. For those of you scoring at home, that means Little Joe tops Little E in wins, poles, championships. Unfortunately, Weatherly died behind the wheel of #8 at the Riverside, Calif., road course only five races into the '64 season and the numeral went into a nosedive. For the next 35 years, the number won only one race despite having some all-time all-stars behind the wheel. However, between Weatherly's last win on Oct. 27, 1963, and Dale Jr.'s first on April 2, 2000, one other man was able to celebrate a victory as Driver #8. On July 27, 1986, at Talladega Superspeedway, Hillin was the original, check that, only young gun in the Winston Cup Series. On a wild day that saw 26 different leaders and an epic multicar crash on the final lap, the pride of Midland, Texas, became the third-youngest driver to win a Cup race. Of the 82 men who have driven the #8, his win is one more win than 79 of them. Totals (as of Watkins Glen, Aug. 17): 1,264 starts, 38 wins, 300,817 laps run, 8,465 laps led $41,227,649 won. 1st win for the car #26 since 1990: with #26-Jamie McMurray's win at Daytona on July 7th, it is the first time the #26 has visited victory lane in the Nextel Cup Series since Brett Bodine won at North Wilkesboro Speedway on March 22, 1990. It is the 21st time a car with the #26 has won in the series. The first time the #26 won was in 1958 with Curtis Turner. The #43 has the most with 198 [Richard Petty didn't win all his races in the #43] followed by the #11 with 183 [besides Hamlin other who have won in #11 include Junior Johnson, Ned Jarrett, Mario Andretti, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltip, Bill Elliott among many others].(7-7-2007)
#31 back in the winners circle: Jeff Burton is only the 2nd person to ever win a Cup race running the #31 after winning at Dover on Sept 24, 2006. Robby Gordon [also for RCR] was the last winner in the #31, at Watkins Glen in August 2003 and was the first winner ever in the #31 at New Hampshire in November 2001, the #31 has now won four times.(9-26-2006)
#9: Bill Elliott won 38 races in the #9 and 6 in the #11; Herb Thomas won 1 race in the #9, Donald Thomas 1 race in the #9 and a car with the #9 didn't win again until Elliott in 1983. Kasey Kahne has won any races in the #9 since he started in the #9 in 2004.(5-28-2006)
#16 when Greg Biffle won with the #16 at Daytona on July 5th, 2003, it was the first time since September 1st, 1975 at Darlington when Bobby Allison won that the #16 has been in victory lane.(7-9-2003)
#38 Breaks Long Streak: when was the last time a car with the number 38 won a Cup race? How about on 11/26/1959, when Ned Jarrett won at Columbia, SC. The #38 has now won 6 times with Elliott Sadler's win at Texas. Twenty (20) car numbers that have NOT won yet [not count 0x or numbers with more then two digits] #'s: 35, 36, 39, 50, 57, 61, 63, 65, 67, 68, 69, 70, 74, 76, 79, 82, 84, 93, 94, 95. Of those numbers, only the #50 with Arnold Motorsports is a full-time team.(4-7-2004)
NOTE: in August 1971, Bobby Allison won at Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC running a Mustang [Ford], the #49, Allison was not and has not been credited with that victory [is listed as 84 wins not 85], as he ran an 'unapproved car'. NASCAR's weekly media book lists 48 races run in 1971 but only 47 manufacters counted as winning.

1-2 #21 and #43 and vs: After the historically reminiscent 1-2 finish by the 21 and 43 cars last Sunday a lot of people wrote to ask me when was the last time that happened. I finally broke out the books and a half cup of rock and rye to research it. The best I can tell the last time the 21 and 43 cars finished 1-2 in that order was the 1976 Southern 500. (The 43 and 21 cars finished 1-2 three times that year, most notably in the Daytona 500, with Pearson winning all three races.) The last time the 43 and 21 car finished 1-2 in that order was the June, 1977 Riverside race. ( Petty and Pearson also finished 1-2 in the race previous to Riverside, the World 600.)(3-30-2001)
