2000 Winston Cup 2000 Raybestos Rookie of the Year Standings

Updated 11-29-2000

How the ROTY Works:

Based upon the best 17 races finishes(by rookie points);

One point awarded for attempting to make the race;

10 points to highest finishing rookie,
9 points for the next highest, down
to one point for the tenth finishing rookie;

Any top 10 finish by a rookie is awarded specific points based on finish, 10 for first 9 for second, down to 1 for a 10th place finish.

Bonus points are awarded four times during a season. After the 10th(California), 20th(Indy), 30th(Talladega) the final race(Atlanta - based on final Cup points standings) of the season as follows: 10pts to the rookie who earned the most Winston Cup points in the current 10-race segment(third segmant was 9 races), the points incrementally decrease by one point until one bonus point is awarded the tenth highest rookie who earned the most points in the segment;

NASCAR officials also have a 50-point bonus at the end of the season in a caucus vote by four NASCAR executives and the 2000 Winston Cup Champion. The panel that grades each rookie candidate in three areas including conduct with officials in the garage and pit areas, conduct and awareness on the track, and personal appearance and relationship with the media on a 10-1 points system.(meaning each member of the panel votes with 10pts to the rookie each member felt was the best, 9 points for the next rookie, down to 1 point, if 10 rookies run)

A driver loses their rookie status for the following year after starting in eight Winston Cup Events in a single season

Rookie Notes: Beginning with the 2001 Winston Cup season, rookies will be able to compete for the rookie of the year title after running up to seven Winston Cup races the previous season. Currently NASCAR allows drivers to run up to five races the previous season and still maintain rookie status. The new rule is laid out in NASCAR's 2000 rookie candidate application(That's Racin')(1-22-2000)

Rookie Changes: in 2000 the Rookie of the Year and rookie status eligibility will change. Instead of the 15 best races counting for the Rookie of the year, it'll be the 17 best races. Also a driver loses their rookie status for the following year after starting in six Winston Cup Events in the present format, in 2000 they can start in up to seven Cup races(National Speed Sport News)(7-9-1999)

Note: this page is just a guide to show how the ROTY points are BASICALLY calculated.

2000 Raybestos ROOKIE OF THE YEAR STANDINGS

TABLE NOTE: The Column NASCAR* is from the FINAL NASCAR Posted standings, won by Matt Kenseth. Even using the formula above I ahve no idea how the bonus points were divided, so my results show the final toals without the Bonus while the NASCAR Column shows the final OFFICIAL total ROTY Points.

ALSO OF NOTE: Jeff Fuller, who started the 2000 season in the #27 Eel River Racing Pontiac, dropped out of the ROTY race when he was released from that ride after six races. Fuller will run for ROTY in 2001, driving the #98 Chip MacPherson owned Ford
