CONGRATS TO 2001 IROC CHAMP - BOBBY LABONTE
IROC TV Schedule below
Question: What is IROC?
Answer: International Race of Champions
The True Value International Race of Champions matches twelve drivers to do battle in equally prepared Pontiac Firebird Trans Am race cars. At the end of the fourth race the points are tallied and an IROC Champion is crowned. All the IROC race cars are equipped with Goodyear Eagle radial tires and specially finished with brilliant DuPont ChromaSystem colors. The True Value IROC series is sponsored by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and DuPont Automotive Finishes. The True Value IROC began in 1973 with a simple premise: Take 12 of the world's top drivers from different forms of motorsports, put them in identically prepared cars, give them a set of rules which virtually eliminates variables usually associated with motorsports (pit stops, qualifying, control over setups), and wave the green flag at them.
IROC 2001 News
- IROC - Labonte wins race and championship: The 25th running of the True Value IROC series has been completed with reigning Winston Cup champion Bobby Labonte earning his first IROC title by finishing in today's event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Jeff Burton led the first 19 laps until a caution for debris bunched the field. At the double-file restart Burton and Labonte went side-by-side down the back stretch where Tony Stewart made it three wide into turn three. At that point Burton and Buddy Lazier got together taking both out of the action. On the final restart, Labonte and Stewart put on a teammate clinic as the two Joe Gibbs Racing drivers went side by side through the corners until lap 44 when Stewart scraped the outside of turn 4 and was not able to challenge after that. Labonte's margin of victory was .324 of a second. Stewart finished second holding off Kenny Brack, Dale Jarrett and Al Unser Jr. In sixth was Ricky Rudd followed by Eddie Cheever Jr., Jeff Green, Mark Dismore, Jeff Burton and Buddy Lazier.(IROC Racing Site)(8-4-2001)
- IROC at Richmond? The IROC series is not expected to return to Michigan next year. Richmond International Raceway is among the tracks being considered as a replacement(Roanoke Times)(8-5-2001)
- IROC at Indy: Indy Racing League driver Al Unser Jr. will replace Scott Goodyear again in Saturday's final round of the IROC series. Goodyear is still recovering from a lower-back fracture suffered in the Indianapolis 500. Unser first subbed for Goodyear in the third IROC event of the season at Michigan, and finished second behind Tony Stewart. A victory this week would make Unser IROC's all-time race winner; he currently shares the record of 11 wins with the late Dale Earnhardt(Charleston Post and Courier)(7-29-2001)
- 2001 IROC Points Standings after 3 of 4 races:
Bobby Labonte 44 points
Kenny Brack 43
Tony Stewart 39
Eddie Cheever Jr. 39
Ricky Rudd 36
Dale Jarrett 35
Scott Goodyear 32
Buddy Lazier 27
Jeff Burton 22
Jeff Green 21
Mark Dismore 19
- Stewart Wins IROC race: Cup driver Tony Stewart passed Eddie Cheever on the 3rd laps and led the rest of the way to win his first IROC race. Stewart crossed the finish line 2.875 seconds ahead of Al Unser Jr., who was substituting for IRL driver Scott Goodyear. Goodyear suffered a back injury in last month's Indianapolis 500. CART driver Kenny Brack was third, Cheever was fourth and series points leader Bobby Labonte fifth. See That's Racin' for the story: IROC race belongs to Stewart and the IROC site for the Race Results(6-9-2001)
- Jarrett to skip IROC race UPDATE Marcis in: due to his rib injury, Dale Jarrett will not race in the third IROC race of the 2001 season. No replacement has been named(FSN's Totally NASCAR)(6-7-2001)
UPDATE: Dave Marcis will sub for Jarrett. Marcis also drove as a substitute in the 1999 race at Indianapolis for CART series driver Adrian Fernandez, who had suffered a wrist injury. All points Marcis accumulates in Saturday's race will be credited to Jarrett. The same applies to Al Unser Jr., who is substituting for the Indy Racing League's Scott Goodyear in the race. Goodyear injured his back in the Indy 500.(That's Racin')(6-8-2001)
- Unser subs for Goodyear in IROC: Two-time True Value IROC champion and fellow Indy Racing Northern Light series driver, Al Unser, Jr., will substitute for the injured Scott Goodyear in the June 9 True Value IROC race at Michigan International Speedway. Goodyear fractured his lower back in an accident during the Indianapolis 500 last Sunday. IROC President Jay Signore said, "We'll miss not having Scott with us at Michigan; he's been a joy to work with, a great competitor, and representative of the Indy Racing Northern Light series. He needs to take care of himself, listen to Dr. Terry Trammell, and hopefully, we'll see him back for the finale at Indy. Unser, Jr., has a great track record in our series and we're confident he'll do a great job. We're grateful to have Al back and thank him for jumping in for
Scott." Al Unser, Jr., has competed 13 times in the True Value IROC series, won the championship in his rookie year, 1986 and repeated the championship in 1988. Four of his 11 total wins have been at Michigan International Speedway. Al Unser, Jr., said, "The most important thing to me right now is that Scott Goodyear has a speedy recovery. As always it is a great honor to be invited to race in IROC, and I am looking forward to a very competitive race in Michigan. Race three of the four part series that matches drivers from various
forms of auto racing in equally prepared Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams will be broadcast on ESPN, Saturday, June 9 at 5:00pm/et.(IROC PR)(6-1-2001)
- 2001 IROC Points Standings after 2 of 4 races:

Ricky Rudd 31
Kenny Brack 29
Dale Jarrett 28
Buddy Lazier 28
Eddie Cheever Jr. 24
Jeff Green 15
Mark Dismore 15
Scott Goodyear 15

- Labonte Wins IROC Race: Bobby Labonte, driving the white True Value IROC Pontiac Firebird, won his second True Value IROC Talladega race by .2097 seconds in the second round of the 25th True Value IROC series at Talladega Superspeedway. Veteran open wheel drivers Kenny Brack, of CART and Buddy Lazier of the IRL made the transition from open wheel to stock car racing look easy. Brack, driving the yellow Pontiac Firebird started in eighth position and finished second. In only his second True Value IROC start Lazier, driving the medium blue Firebird started and finished third. Picking up five True Value IROC bonus points for leading the most laps, NASCAR Busch Series driver Jeff Green led the most laps during the second half of the race. With only three laps remaining, however,
Green lost the lead after a restart. The only incident occurred on lap 37 and involved Cheever, Jr., Lazier, and Jarrett. Cheever, Jr.'s
car picked up a push coming off turn four and made contact with Lazier, collecting Jarrett. With his second win at Talladega, Labonte joined True Value IROC champions Al Unser Jr. and Dale Earnhardt as a multiple winner in the series at Talladega. The results:
1st-Bobby Labonte, 24pts
2nd-Kenny Brack, 17
3rd-Buddy Lazier, 14
4th-Ricky Rudd, 12
5th-Eddie Cheever, Jr, 10
6th-Jeff Burton, 9
7th-Mark Dismore, 8
8th-Jeff Green, 12
9th-Scott Goodyear, 6
10th-Tony Stewart, 7
11th-Dale Jarrett, 4, Accident
ESPN: Will televise the Talladega True Value IROC race Saturday, May 26 at 5:00/et. Next Race: True Value IROC XXIV will resume Saturday, June 9, 2001 at Michigan(IROC PR)(4-21-2001)
- Stewart on pole for IROC: During the IROC's random draw for the pole position, Tony Stewart earned the top starting position for Saturday's 38-lap race, the second of four events this season. The remainder of the 11-car field was set by reversing the finishing order from the previous race. Dale Jarrett, who won the season opener(at Daytona), will start last. Jeff Green, who finished last at Daytona, will start second alongside Stewart. Buddy Lazier from the Indy Racing League is third, Jeff Burton fourth and Mark Dismore of the IRL rounds out the top five. The race will be broadcast 5 p.m. Eastern May 26 on ABC. The next IROC event is June 9 at Michigan(That's Racin')(4-20-2001)
- Stewart in IROC: IROC confirmed that Tony Stewart will compete in the three remaining IROC races, including Saturday's event at Talladega. In the season's first race at Daytona, Stewart substituted for Gil de Ferran, last season's champion of CART. de Ferran had injured his foot in testing and was unable to compete. Since de Ferran has been unable to test or practice with the IROC cars -- he is currently competing in both CART and Indy Racing League events -- he has withdrawn for the remainder of the IROC season. All points and victories Stewart gains this season will be credited to himself and not de Ferran. Stewart finished ninth in the series opener at Daytona and in his first season in the series in 2000, he was third in points(That's Racin')(4-18-2001)
- IROC Testing: The True Value IROC team concluded their first day of testing Monday at Talladega Superspeedway in preparation for round two of the 2001, 25th anniversary season. Veteran test drivers Dave Marcis, Dick Trickle, Jim Sauter and Andy Hillenburg were on hand to put the Pontiac Firebirds through initial test runs. Dave Marcis said, "We worked a bit today with the roof pieces, the NASCAR air deflector. What we have on the IROC cars is the equivalent to what we have on the Winston Cup cars and we all agree that the cars are extremely comfortable. They draft really well, so if you fall behind you can draft back up again." Dick Trickle said, "The cars are driving like baby buggies and we'll have to remind the drivers they're still in race cars going 180 MPH. Andy Hillenburg said, "To give you an example of how much fun it is to drive these cars, Jay Signore told us to go out and just run a few laps, well, we
ran an entire race and didn't come in until Dave (Marcis) ran out of gas." IROC President, Jay Signore said, "Talladega is one of our favorite tracks. We've had some great races here over the years and always look forward to the next one. For our 25th anniversary we are paying tribute to all of our past champions. We have four dedicated test cars, and at each of the four races we have those four cars lettered with the names of past champions. We have 16 champions total, so it works out perfectly. For Talladega we have the 1975 champion Bobby Unser, 1984 champion Cale Yarborough, 1989 champion Terry Labonte and 1993 champion Davey Allison." He continued, At Daytona, IROC paid tribute to 1974 champion Mark Donohue, 1979 champion Mario Andretti, 1980 champion Bobby Allison and the 2000 reigning champion Dale Earnhardt. In tribute to Dale Earnhardt, IROC will run eleven cars for the remainder of the season. Jay Signore said, "Dale Earnhardt was a great champion and we feel it is a fitting tribute to run one man shy." The True Value IROC Talladega race takes place this Saturday, April 21 at 2:30 p.m., following the NASCAR Busch series race(IROC PR)(4-17-2001)
- Earnhardt NOT to replaced in IROC UPDATE: Dale Earnhardt's entry will not be filled in the remaining three International Race of Champions (IROC) events this season. Earnhardt, a four-time IROC series champion - including the past two seasons - died in the Daytona 500 in February. According to sources, IROC officials will issue a news release this week explaining their decision not to use a replacement driver in Earnhardt's car the remainder of the season. Earnhardt had 11 wins in 58 starts in the IROC series, with his last victory coming in the 2000 season opener at Daytona. He was series champion the past two seasons. In addition, Tony Stewart is expected to continue to fill in for Gil de Ferran, last season's champion of CART. Stewart substituted for de Ferran in the season opener because de Ferran had injured his foot in a CART test session weeks earlier. Since de Ferran has not had any practice or test sessions in the IROC cars, he is not expected to compete this season(That's Racin')(3-25-2001)
UPDATE: True Value IROC officials announced they will run an 11-car field for the remaining three races of the 2001 True Value IROC schedule. In tribute to four-time True Value IROC champion Dale Earnhardt, the 12th car will remained parked. Series President Jay Signore said, "Dale's career in the series is one to be revered. He accepted a record 17 invitations to represent his sport and went on
to capture the title four times. The decision to start only 11 cars in honor of Dale is a first for us, but one we believe is well deserved. With the support of all the competitors and Dale's family, we will keep the 12th car parked as a tribute to honor and remember Dale as the champion's champion." An 11-time winner in the True Value IROC series, Earnhardt won back-to-back championships in 1999 and 2000 adding to his previous triumphs in 1990 and 1995. He most recently added to his legend during the season opener in February at Daytona International Speedway. While battling for the lead, Earnhardt's Pontiac Firebird was sent into the infield grass where he never missed a beat. He returned to the track at full speed and finished the event in seventh place. Eventual winner of the race, Dale Jarrett cited the incident as, "proof that Dale Earnhardt was one of the best race car drivers in the world." Race one from Daytona will be rebroadcast on ESPN2 Saturday, April 14, at 8:00pm/et. The True Value IROC series will continue with race-two at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday, April 21.(IROC PR)(4-9-2001)
- IROC Replacement UPDATE: getting asked much about what driver will replace Dale Earnahrdt in the IROC Series, sorry, no idea have not heard, if they follow suit when Gil de Ferran was replaced at Daytona, it could be the #7 driver in Cup points from 2000, Rusty Wallace, or if de Ferran comes back for Talladega, Tony Stewart, who subbed for de Ferran could be the driver, BUT I have not heard anything....yet(3-13-2001)
UPDATE: Dale Earnhardt could earn a piece of the International Race of Champions title after running in the season-opening round at Daytona. If IROC follows its 1993 precedent, it will name a driver to replace Earnhardt and give that driver Earnhardt's points. Terry Labonte raced the IROC finale for Davey Allison, who was killed in a helicopter crash. Labonte scored enough points to earn the IROC title for Allison(Daytona Beach News Journal/Speed Magazine), hearing the replacement driver will be named next week(3-16-2001)
- Jarrett Wins IROC 25 Race 1: Dale Earnhardt and Eddie Cheever Jr. were vying for the lead when Cheever went low into turn 1 and tapped Earnhardt into the grass apron. Somehow, Earnhardt kept from wrecking, but the time he lost in his skid was enough to ensure he wouldn't make it to victory lane. After Cheever and Earnhardt knocked each other around, Jarrett found an opening, and outran Ricky Rudd to the finish line. Earnhardt was so peeved about the move that he chased Cheever down -- after the checkered flag -- found him on the back straight and tapped Cheever's car, sending it into a spin. The two drivers met in pit row after the race, smiled and exchanged words. But the message from Earnhardt was clear. The results:
1st-Dale Jarrett, 24pts
2nd-Ricky Rudd, 19
3rd-Eddie Cheever, 14
4th-Kenny Brack, 12
5th-Bobby Labonte, 10
6th-Scott Goodyear, 9
7th-Dale Earnhardt, 13
8th-Mark Dismore, 7
9th-Tony Stewart, 6
10th-Jeff Burton, 5, Accident
11th-Buddy Lazier, 4, Accident
12th-Jeff Green, 3, Engine
IROC 25, race 1 will be televised on Sunday, Feb 18th at 5:00pm/et on ESPN(see stories and results at - That's Racin': IROC race is taken by Jarrett and IROC race results; or CNN/SI and IROC Racing Site)(2-16-2001)
- IROC: Dale Earnhardt will start from the pole in Friday's season opening IROC Series race. Earnhardt got the top starting spot in a green Pontiac Firebird with the spin of a wheel at a midday news conference Wednesday at Daytona USA, just outside the Daytona International Speedway track. Earnhardt spun fourth among the 12 drivers entered and landed on the section that would have given him the car color IROC drivers hate most. IROC calls it "rose" but the drivers call it pink. Jeff Burton, however, had already landed on the rose-colored car and got the third starting spot. So Earnhardt was moved to the right on the wheel until he came to an open spot, and the green space was immediately to the right of the rose. Earnhardt actually didn't want the green car - racers are traditionally superstitious of green race cars. When Grand National series champion Jeff Green went last in the order and drew the 12th starting spot in the black car. Earnhardt's fourth overall IROC title last year tied him with Mark Martin for the most in series history. Martin is not included in this year's field, which includes only the top five in last year's points standings from Winston Cup. Tony Stewart will participate in Friday's race as a substitute for injured CART champion Gil de Ferran. Eddie Cheever Jr. will start alongside Earnhardt on the front row, with Jeff Burton and Scott Goodyear on Row 2. Kenny Brack, Mark Dismore, Jarrett, Buddy Lazier, Stewart, Ricky Rudd, Bobby Labonte and Green round out the starting lineup(That's Racin')(2-14-2001)
- Stewart to Sub in IROC? UPDATE: hearing that Tony Stewart was offered yesterday afternoon to fill-in for Gil deFerran at Daytona in the IROC race due to deFerran injuries in a recent CART practice/test session. Stewart supposedly accepted the offer, but will have to get out of his deal to do TV for the IROC Daytona race(Matt Yocum/FoxSports)
UPDATE: Tony Stewart will replace 2000 CART FedEx Series Champion Gil de Ferran in the first round of the 2001 True Value International Race of Champions at Daytona International Speedway. De Ferran had two incidents in recent Champ car test sessions resulting in injuries to his shoulder and ribcage. The 2001 CART testing schedule requires teams to do all testing out of season, concluding March 8th, which complicates Gil's injury situation. Tony Stewart, a two-time veteran of the True Value IROC Series, finished sixth in the final 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup points standings. Regarding de Ferran's replacement Signore said, "Tony is next in line
according to the points standings and already in place at Daytona for the 500. We're grateful for his enthusiasm and proud to have him back in the series."(IROC Racing PR)(2-7-2001)
- IROC to honor champs: There have been 16 past champions of IROC and all of them will be honored during the year with their names on the practice cars. The four drivers that will be recognized in Round 1 at Daytona are Bobby Allison, Mark Donohue, Mario Andretti and Dale Earnhardt. Daytona USA will also feature two of IROC's classic cars in a special exhibit. The exhibit will have a Camaro that was wheeled by Dave Marcis and a Porsche piloted by the late Donohue, who won the inaugural series. Marcis is now IROC's lead test driver(Speed Magazine)(2-7-2001)
- Why No IROC for Martin? been asked, here is why: The official entry list for the 2001 IROC series does not include four-time champ Mark Martin. The field of 12 announced by IROC includes Gil de Ferran and Kenny Brack from CART, Buddy Lazier, Eddie Cheever, Scott Goodyear and Mark Dismore from the IRL, and Bobby Labonte, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Burton, Dale Jarrett, Ricky Rudd and Jeff Green from NASCAR. According to sources close to
IROC, they chose to select the top five in points in Winston Cup and then extend invitations to more open-wheel racers. (In recent years, participation in the series has been dominated by stock-car drivers.) As a result, Martin did not receive an invitation(J-Mar Express Newsletter)(1-26-2001)
- IROC Drivers? UPDATE 3: hearing the following will be the 2001 lineup of IROC drivers: From NASCAR Winston Cup: already announced Dale Earnhardt, Ricky Rudd, Jeff Burton along with Dale Jarrett and Bobby Labonte. From the IRL: already announced Eddie Cheever Jr, Scott Goodyear, Buddy Lazier along with Mark Dismore. From CART: Gil de Ferran and Kenny Brack. From the Busch Series: Jeff Green.(1-3-2001)
UPDATE add Green: Jeff Green is the latest driver named to the 2001 12-driver IROC field. He joins fellow NASCAR drivers Jeff Burton, Dale Earnhardt and Ricky Rudd who compete in the Winston Cup Series. Open-wheel veterans Eddie Cheever, Buddy Lazier and Scott Goodyear will also compete in IROC XXV(Talladega PR)(1-4-2001)
UPDATE 2: add Jarrett and Labonte - The last two NASCAR Winston Cup champions – Bobby Labonte (2000) and Dale Jarrett (1999) – will join four-time and defending IROC champion Dale Earnhardt in the 2001 line-up. The three top-ranking stock car aces join the seven previously announced invitees: Buddy Lazier, Scott Goodyear, Eddie Cheever Jr., and Mark Dismore from the Indy Racing Northern Lights Series; Winston Cup stars Jeff Burton and Ricky Rudd; and Busch champion Jeff Green. Who will get the other two seats? Four-time IROC champion Mark Martin, plus a number of CART FedEx Championship Series drivers are possibilities(SpeedVision) AND It's apparent that IROC wants to diversify its lineup. Bobby Labonte and Dale Jarrett likely are in, meaning only last year's top-5 made the cut. Among the notables left out: Tony Stewart, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace and Dale Earnhardt Jr. CART Indycar champion Gil de Ferran likely will be invited, along with CART star Kenny Brack. That's a 6-6 split between stock car and open-wheel drivers, a far cry from recent years when NASCAR drivers dominated the lineups.(Daily Press)(1-5-2001)
UPDATE 3: The 2000 CART FedEx Series Champion, Gil de Ferran and The 2000 CART FedEx Rookie of the Year, Kenny Brack will participate in the 25th running of the True Value IROC series. de Ferran and Brack's invitation acceptance brings the field of 12 to six open wheel drivers versus six stock car veterans. They join previously
announced IRL drivers, Buddy Lazier, Scott Goodyear, Eddie Cheever, Jr., and Mark Dismore. Also previously announced were NASCAR Cup drivers, Bobby Labonte, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Burton, Dale Jarrett, Ricky Rudd and NASCAR BGN, Jeff Green. 2001 will mark de Ferran's first True Value IROC series. Brack was unable to compete in the 2000 True Value IROC series due to scheduling conflicts. Brack's True Value IROC debut came in 1999 for his IRL
Championship. The 25th anniversary season of the True Value IROC series begins on February 16 with race one at Daytona International Speedway. The race will be broadcast on ESPN Sunday, February 18 at 5:00pm/et(IROC PR)(1-17-2001)
- Rudd to IROC: Ricky Rudd has accepted an invitation to race in the 25th anniversary edition of the True Value International Race of Champions (IROC) Series in 2001. Rudd, driver of the #28 Texaco/Havoline Ford, is the 1992 IROC series champion. Rudd was an IROC contender in 1992, 1993 and 1995. The four-race IROC schedule includes races at Daytona (Feb. 16), Talladega (April 21), Michigan (June 9) and Indianapolis (Aug. 4). ABC and ESPN will broadcast the events in 2001(Ricky Rudd Site). Rudd joins IRL drivers Buddy Lazier and Scott Goodyear as the drivers announced so far for IROC 2001(12-5-2000)
- IROC: while not officially named yet, IRL drivers Buddy Lazier, Eddie Cheever and Scott Goodyear have joined the International Race of Champions(IROC) series for 2001(Times Dispatch) AND IRL champion Buddy Lazier and runner-up Scott Goodyear have been invited into the IROC 2001. Up to six Winston Cup drivers will be invited and the BGN champ(Jeff Green). It's also conceivable that IRL driver Sarah Fisher will become the first woman in the 25-year-old series(Daily Press)(11-21-2000)
- IROC tests at Daytona, in Cup Talladega trim: After seeing NASCAR’s aerodynamic rules produce 49 lead changes among 21 drivers in the recent NASCAR Winston Cup Series restrictor-plate race at Talladega, the International Race of Champions(IROC) is giving the package a try during its three-day test at Daytona International Speedway. Four Pontiac Firebirds that were shook down on Tuesday, the second day of IROC testing, were all equipped with a metal deflector across the roof of the car and a dirty spoiler. Round 1 of IROC XXV, which will feature 12 of the best drivers in the world in identically-prepared
Pontiac Firebirds, will return to the “World Center of Racing” on Feb. 16 during Speedweeks. IROC test drivers Dave Marcis, Andy Hillenburg, Dick Trickle, Jim Sauter and 2001 IROC participants Scott Goodyear and Buddy Lazier ran in Tuesday’s session. It is expected that IROC will have some kind of aerodynamic package in place for the 25th season of IROC next year. IROC testing continues today and is open to the public with access through DAYTONA USA, the official attraction of NASCAR(DIS PR)(11-14-2000)
