How the ROTY Works:

Based upon the best 17 races finishes(by rookie points);

One point awarded for attempting to make the race;

10 points to highest finishing rookie,
9 points for the next highest, down
to one point for the tenth finishing rookie;

Any top 10 finish by a rookie is awarded specific points based on finish, 10 for first 9 for second, down to 1 for a 10th place finish.

Bonus points are awarded four times during a season. After the 10th(California), 20th(Pocono), 30th(Lowes) the final race(Atlanta - based on final Cup points standings) of the season as follows: 10pts to the rookie who earned the most Winston Cup points in the current 10-race segment(third segmant was 9 races), the points incrementally decrease by one point until one bonus point is awarded the tenth highest rookie who earned the most points in the segment;

The second part of this system is determined by a Raybestos Rookie of the Year panel which includes, NASCAR's President, Director of Operations, Winston Cup Series Director, Winston Cup Manager of Communications, and the defending Winston Cup Champion. During the final race weekend of the season the panel meets to discuss the Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidates and grades them on three criteria. The criteria includes: driver conduct with officials in the garage and pit areas, driver conduct and awareness on the track, and personal appearance and relationship with the media. The panel then votes on each candidate in all three areas using the 10-to-1 points system. Total points will be averaged by each panel member and added to the entry, competition and bonus points of each rookie candidate after the final race of the season. The total of these points will determine the overall Raybestos NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year.

2001 Raybestos ROOKIE OF THE YEAR STANDINGS

  • Harvick named Rookie of the Year(ROTY): Kevin Harvick, driver of the #29 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet, claimed the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year Award. He finished the season with a total of 331 points, 66 points ahead of second-place Kurt Busch. A native of Bakersfield, Calif., Harvick took over the Richard Childress-owned ride after the death of seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion, Dale Earnhardt. During the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season, Harvick visited the winner.s circle twice (Atlanta - 3/11 and Chicago - 7/15) and collected six top-five finishes and 16 top 10s. He also topped the season off with a ninth-place finish in the final point standings (Harvick is the only driver to finish in the top-10 in points that only competed in 35 events)(NASCAR PR).(11-27-2001)

    The rules still currently state that the 17 best races are used to determine ROTY
    looks like NASCAR is now using 17 races instead of 18 and for our totals match up
    So this page should be less confusing for all involved now (including me)

    Note: this page is just a guide to show how the ROTY points are BASICALLY calculated.

    NOTE: so far the 'official' results do not show the bonus points that should have been
    awarded after Martinsville. My calculations have the award figured in.
    Am not getting an answer why no Bonus Points being awarded after race #30
    Have been informed by a few PR folks that the third segment is now the end of the season
    not after the 30th race as the Raybestos rules states

    ALSO: no idea how the third bonus or Final bonus was calculated or thought up with the exception of what is in the rules above. The third bonus calculation? not sure what races that includes

  • BLUE signifies one of the races that do not count in the rookie points
    (only 17 best count - see rules at top, plus the one(1) for the attempt for the other races besides the 17)
