Race Comments:  Terry Labonte won the Mountain Dew Southern 500 before an estimated crowd of 75,000 at Darlington Raceway. It is his 22nd career victory in his 770th race. It is his first victory since March 1999. Prior to the green flag the following drivers, under penalty, dropped from their original starting positions to the rear of the field for the reason in parenthesis: #7 Spencer (backup car), #37 Cope (engine change), #88 Jarrett (engine change).
