In front of a crowd estimated at 200,000, Michael Waltrip won his second Daytona 500, in a race halted by rain after 109 laps of the scheduled 200.  The race was red-flagged twice for rain. The first red-flag period, on Lap 63, lasted 1 hour, 8 minutes. The second was called on Lap 109, and the race was not resumed after approximately 65 minutes. Prior to green flag, four drivers forfeited their original starting spots earned in qualifying and dropped to the rear of the field, in order: Mark Martin (back-up car), Casey Mears (back-up car), Johnny Benson (back-up car), Kevin Harvick (engine change).
