- Waltrip wins the pole at Pocono: #15-Michael Waltrip won the Budweiser Pole for the Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway with a lap of 169.052mph. It is Waltrip's first Bud Pole of 2005 and puts him in the 2006 Budweiser Shootout. Can ya believe? It is Waltrip's first pole in 456 races? since Michigan on June, 21 1991 [he finished 34th] and it is only his 3rd career Bud Pole in 620 races, his other pole also came in 1991..at Dover. #97-Kurt Busch will start 2nd, followed by #25-Brian Vickers, #42-Jamie McMurray and #10-Scott Riggs. Missing the race are #34-P.J. Jones, #27-Kirk Shelmedine, #92-Hermie Sadler and #00-Carl Long. Long was to use a backup car [Dodge instead of Chevy], but the motor wouldn't fit, so they withdrew. Sadler spun and wacked the turn 3 wall and never took a time. A few drivers smacked the wall on their attempts, which slowed their times: #24-Gordon, #34-Jones, #5-Busch were among those. #48-Jimmie Johnson, the points leader will start 21st and last weeks winner, #16-Greg Biffle, starts 23rd. #32-Bobby Hamilton Jr. was the best of the non-top 35 teams to make the race, starting 24th. #4-Mike Wallace was the slowest of the top-35 teams and will start 42nd, via points.
TV: for some reason, qualifying was not shown lon live TV, but will be aired on FX at 5:00pm/et, today [June 11th] at the same time [thanks!] as Busch Series qualifying at Nashville will be shown [live] on Speed Channel. Cup qualifying will also re-air on Speed Channel at 12:00midnight.

- Some Qualifying Notes:
#5-Busch scraped the wall on his lap.
#34-P.J. Jones scraped the wall on his lap.
#24-Gordon scraped the turn two wall, which slowed his speed down, cosmetic damage is the report.
#92-Sadler spun out and slid into the turn 3 wall and recorded no speed, he will miss the race.
#00-Long, who wrecked in Happy Hour practice, will go to the backup car, supposedly a Dodge..not the Chevy he was running.

Drivers in RED will be required to qualify on time/speed, not in top 35
Drivers in MAROON will be required to qualify on time/speed, not in top 35 BUT have a past champions provisional available if needed, only one is used, so if there are two or more past champs
the driver who has won the championship most recently, gets the spot.

- New Procedure for Determining Race Line-Ups - No more provisionals [accept the champ]: NASCAR will institute a new procedure for establishing the starting race field in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series effective with the 2005 season, NASCAR officials announced today. NASCAR has revamped the system by simplifying the procedure with teams no longer accruing provisionals throughout the season to gain entry into the starting fields. While starting positions one through 42 in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series still will be determined by qualifying speed, the new system will assure the highest-ranked 35 positions of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series owner championship points that have entered the event prior to the entry deadline one of those starting positions in the field, providing they have made an attempt to qualify [which usually means the team at least practiced and made an effort to qualify]. The remaining seven positions will be assigned to those drivers with the fastest qualifying speeds whose car owners are not among the top 35. The final starting position – the champion’s provisional – can be utilized by a car owner whose driver is a current or past NASCAR NEXTEL Cup champion who participated as a driver during their 2004 season and was entered in the event for that owner in that car prior to the entry deadline. If there is more than one series champion vying for the position, it will be given to the most recent series champion. If the final provisional starting position – 43rd in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup – is not filled by a current or past series champion, it will be assigned to the next eligible car owner according to qualifying results. Through the first five races of the season for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, the top 35 in the NNCS of the 2004 owner championship points entered in the event prior to the entry deadline will be assured one of the 42 starting positions in the field, provided they have made an attempt to qualify. From the sixth race on, the current owner championship points will be used to determine the top 35 each race week. In the event that conditions prevent qualifying from being run, starting positions will be assigned according to the respective series’ 2005 Rule Book.(NASCAR PR)
- The Impounding Rules:
Post-qualifying impound procedure will be used in all three national series
Cost-containment measure for teams
Following qualifying, starting field will be impounded until race day
Teams will not be permitted to work on their cars unless for special circumstances and authorized by NASCAR officials
New procedure will alter the traditional race weekend schedule
Traditional race weekend (Friday-Sunday): two hours practice on Friday, qualifying Saturday and then the cars would be impounded immediately following post-qualifying inspection
Nextel Cup events using the procedure [21 of 36]: California (both races); Atlanta (both - Jayski Note: not sure about this, Atlanta put out a PR saying they would NOT go to the new rule); Bristol (both - Jayski Note: last I heard, the April race still would be a 3-day deal with qualifying on Friday, race on Sunday, the August race is Saturday night); Phoenix (both); Darlington; Richmond (both); Pocono (both); Michigan (both); Daytona (July); New Hampshire (both); Watkins Glen; and Kansas.(Jayski Note: also Indiabapolis will probbaly use the rule as they already hold qualifying on Saturday's for a Sunday race]
Additional events may be added during the season
All Busch and Craftsman Truck events will use the impound procedure (FoxSports)(2-12-2005)
