The "Budweiser Shootout" held 1979-2008, was a non-points event (formerly named the "Busch Clash" and "Bud Shootout") has jump-started the NASCAR Cup Series and was the season-opening race at the "World Center of Racing" one week before the Daytona 500. The 70 lap race among the winners of the "Bud Pole Award" from the most recent season and included past champions from prior "Busch Clash" and "Bud Shootout" events. Previously, Bud Pole second-round-fastest qualifiers from all points races were eligible to race for one slot in the Budweiser Shootout; there is no longer a qualifying race (as there is no longer a 2nd round of qualifying). This was a DRIVERs race, so if Driver A left Team A and went to Team B, then it was Driver A in the Team B car and the Team A car is not eligible unless they found a new driver who was eligible

Bill Elliott to run #6 car in Shootout? Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody has learned that talks are underway to put former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Bill Elliott behind the wheel of Roush-Fenway Racing’s #6 UPS Ford in the February 6 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway. Elliott ran a partial schedule with Wood Brothers Racing in 2009, and is expected to do so again this season beginning with the season-opening Daytona 500. The Woods have no plans to compete in the Bud Shootout, however, leaving Elliott free to drive for another team. Ragan is not eligible for the race, while Elliott qualifies as a former Sprint Cup, Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400 and Budweiser Shootout champion. Negotiations are reportedly in their preliminary stages, awaiting the approval of sponsor UPS. A call to Roush-Fenway Racing in search of comment was not immediately returned this afternoon. (Sirius Speedway)(1-6-2010)
NOTE: as of Feb 1, 2010, been told that Elliott will NOT run the #6 Ford and not run the race, the #21 Wood Brothers Team does not plan to run the event either.(2-3-2010)
Schrader to run in Bud Shootout? UPDATE: hearing that NASCAR Sprint Cup veteran driver, Ken Schrader, who won the Bud Shootout in 1989 and 1990 [and is now eligible to run the race] will drive the #82 Red Bull Racing Toyota in the 2010 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway on February 6th. Schrader became eligible for the race when the eligibility requirements were changed recently.(1-6-2010)
UPDATE: When NASCAR announced a revised format for this season's Shootout race, two-time Shootout winner Ken Schrader came knocking on Red Bull Racing Team's door. With Schrader's past winners spot, and a #82 team eager to start the season, the pairing just made sense. Schrader will pilot the #82 Red Bull Toyota for the February 6 feature race at Daytona International Speedway. Scott Speed, the full- time driver of the #82, is not one of the drivers eligible to compete in the Shootout. Speed will take back the reins of the Red Bull Toyota for the Daytona 500 on February 14. "Kenny's desire and dedication to NASCAR has always made him a favorite among fans and throughout the garage area," said VP and General Manager Jay Frye. "We’re excited he approached us with the idea and are looking forward to giving him the opportunity he deserves and has earned.” The NASCAR veteran earned a starting spot in this season's race by winning the event in both 1989 and 1990 (TRB). For more info on the race, the new format and rules, see my 2010 Budweiser Shootout page.(1-7-2010)
Budweiser Shootout eligibility rules change: NASCAR announced Wednesday a revision to the 2010 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona format that provides fans with a strong lineup of drivers highlighted by last year’s top performers and a collection of previous winners at the sport’s most-storied race track. The 32nd annual season-opening event launches Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Feb. 6 with green flag set for 8:10pm/et. The new criteria are based upon the following qualifications, with eligibility based on a driver having competed in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series within the last two seasons:
• The 12 drivers that qualified for the 2009 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup
• Past NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champions
• Past Budweiser Shootout champions
• Past Daytona 500 and Coke Zero 400 champions
• The reigning Raybestos Rookie of the Year
“We’re always looking at ways to make this event bigger and better for our fans and we believe the new format for the Budweiser Shootout puts together an exceptionally strong lineup of our top drivers,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. “In our discussions with the track, we thought by placing an additional emphasis on the drivers who had performed well at Daytona over the years would create an even more compelling element for the fans to get excited about at the beginning of the season.”
The race distance will continue to be 75 laps (187.5 miles), consisting of two segments – 25 and 50 laps. Both green-flag laps and yellow-flag laps will count. Between segments there will be a 10-minute pit stop allowing teams to pit and change tires, add fuel and make normal chassis adjustments. Crews will be permitted to work on cars and will be allowed to perform functions they would do on a normal pit stop in a regular NASCAR Sprint Cup event. All work must be performed on pit road or in the garage. Changing of springs, shock absorbers or rear-ends will not be permitted.
Starting positions will again be determined by a blind-draw at the annual Budweiser Shootout Draw Party on Thursday night, Feb. 4 on the SPEED stage in the Midway, outside Turn 4. The Budweiser Shootout – a “non-points” event for NASCAR Sprint Cup competitors – was first held in 1979, originally known as the Busch Clash. Kevin Harvick won last year’s event. Tickets for all 2010 Speedweeks events are now available online at daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.

Budweiser Shootout eligibility not set yet: NASCAR officials are talking about eligibility requirements for the Budweiser Shootout, scheduled for Feb. 6 at Daytona International Speedway. Dodge has only three teams - with Richard Petty Motorsports moving to Ford for next year - and thus can't fill its allotment.(Hampton Roads)(12-11-2009)

Chevrolet: 48, 5, 24, 14, 42, 39; wildcard #71 as Bobby Labonte is a past champions
Dodge [if RPM runs Dodges]: 2, 9, 44, 19, 77, 43; wildcard #12
Dodge [if RPM decides not to run Dodges]: 2, 77, 12 and after that ?
Ford: 16, 99, 17, 26 [if team is sold to a Ford owner], 6, 96 [if they stay with Ford and if they run in 2010]; wildcard #98
Toyota: 11, 83, 18, 00, 47, 20; wildcard #56-Truex Jr. using the owners points fron #55.(12-9-2009)
With the new race format change starting in the 2009 season, moved pole winners to the Pole Winners page and below are the drivers and team that could race in the 2010 Budweiser Shootout. Changes in owners points [a team buying another team car number / owners points] and/or a team that changes manufacturers like Richard Petty Motorsports, who change from Dodge to Ford, but cannot imagine the #9 Budweiser car NOT being in the race, so RPM could run Dodge for the race as #7-Robby Gordon did in 2009 evben thou he switched to Toyota for the remainder of the season.(12-9-2009)
Bud Shootout adds wildcards: NASCAR added a ‘wild card’ entry for each manufacturer before the running of the 2009 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway, which increased the size of the field from 24 to 28 cars. The 32nd annual season-opening event at Daytona International Speedway will be held on Saturday night, Feb. 6, 2010.
The lineup will consist of the top six teams from each manufacturer, based on the final 2009 car owner points. Eligibility is based on owners competing in this event with the same manufacturer as 2009. The “wild card” entry is based on the following criteria:
• Any owner outside of the top six in year end 2009 owners’ points whose driver is a past NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion that attempted to qualify for all [36] of the 2009 events (only one position will be filled per manufacturer and will be based on the most recent past champion per manufacturer).
• If an owner/manufacturer does not have a past champion driver, the next highest eligible owner outside the top six in year end 2009 owners’ points from each manufacturer will be eligible to compete in the event.
For 2009 the race distance was increased from 70 laps to 75 (187.5 miles) on the 2.5-mile tri-oval with two segments of 25 and 50 laps. Both green- and yellow-flag laps counted. Between segments, there was a 10-minute pit stop at which time teams were allowed to pit and change tires, add fuel and make normal chassis adjustments. Crews were permitted to work on cars and allowed to perform functions they did during a normal pit stop in a regular NASCAR Sprint Cup event. Changing of springs, shock absorbers or rear-ends were not permitted.
Starting positions were determined by a blind draw, at the Budweiser Shootout Draw Party.(12-9-2009)

x = Chase Teams
(A) - Richard Petty Motorsports will merge with Yates Racing and run Fords and not Dodges in 2010. Also the #44 team will close, no idea if the #43 team or #98 team will get the owners points from the #44 team. RPM could run Dodges in the race, as Robby Gordon did in 2009 [when he switched to Toyota]. If the team decides not to run Dodge, assuming they would not run the race. #42-Juan Pablo Montoya did not run the race in 2009 aft EGR switched from Dodge to Chevy
(B) - Hall of Fame's #96 team is not doing an alliance with Yates Racing in 2010, no announcments have been made by Hall of Fame Racing on its 2010 plan or who will drive. So if the team does not run in 2010 or change manufacturer, the #21 could move into the race, if it wishes to run.
(C) - Martin Truex Jr. moves to Michael Waltrip Racing and will run the #56, Waltrip semi-retires, scheduled to run four races in the #55 during the 2010 season, the #56 will get the owners points from the #55, which looks like will get Truex in the as the wildcard.
(D) - gets the wildcard as a past champion who has run the full 2009 season
