NOTES:

 

WAIT A MINUTE, KYLE. IT’S NOT OVER:  Kyle Busch’s run to a possible first Chase title hit a big pothole at California with engine trouble, knocking him 107 points further back, now a total of 187 out in ninth place. Afterward, Busch seemed to indicate his Chase run was over. Tony Stewart has overcome 24^th and 21^st place finishes in the first two Chase races, with a fourth and the win at Cali, pulling him within a makeable 107 points out of the lead.

HOW MUCH CAN YOU MAKE UP OVER THE LAST SIX?  Jimmie Johnson made the most miraculous rally in Chase history in the very first Chase I in 2004. Behind 247 points after a 32^nd at Kansas, he made up 239 of those points over the final six races, losing to Kurt Busch by a mere eight points. In his first title year of 2006, he roared back from 8^th place and 156 points down at this point.

HAMLIN CLOSEST HE’S BEEN AT THIS STAGE:  Denny Hamlin, who has made all five Chases he has attempted, is the closest to the lead after four races of the four, at 36 out. In his first Chase, Hamlin was 55 points out.
