Dodge wrapped up its two-day manufacturer test session at Daytona International Speedway with Stacy Compton and the #92 Kodiak Dodge Intrepid R/T on top of the speed chart. Compton posted the fast lap among the 10 teams testing at the famed 2.5-mile tri-oval in the morning session with a lap of 180.821mph. The guys worked hard to make sure when we did unload, we were pretty good, Compton said. I felt like we could come down here and be pretty competitive with the cars that were here. We unloaded and ran descent yesterday. We made some changes. We ran a little bit better this morning. We made some more changes and sort of leveled off. Said Blaney: We made a bunch of gains. We came down here with a whole bunch of things to throw at these cars everything. A lot of the stuff we threw at (the car) was pretty good. Do our times stack up to the other guys? I dont know. The weather conditions change that a little bit. Well find out here in a couple of weeks. Sacks, the 1985 Pepsi Firecracker 400 champion, filled in for Burton in the #22 Caterpillar Dodge Intrepid R/T. Burton, who was treated and released at Halifax Medical Center on Tuesday for a nosebleed, rested at his hotel in the morning and visited his team at the track in the afternoon. Sacks, an area resident, was happy to help out Burton and Bill Davis Racing. Ive got to ask (crew chief) Tommy (Baldwin) how much I owe him when the day is over, Sacks said. Its the most fun Ive had in a long time. Unlike the other manufacturers, Dodge teams passed up on drafting sessions. Weve all got to work on getting these cars into the races, said Ray Evernham, owner of the #9 Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Bill Elliott and the #19 Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by rookie Casey Atwood. Then we can rely on past experience, hopefully, to make sure they race good in the draft. Weve got to get our drivers in the race so theyve got the opporuntiy to draft. Said Elliott: I feel things have gone well. Im just trying to adjust. I guess I come into it and dont know what to expect. We come here with a total new rules package and its gonna take a little time to sort through this stuff. Testing will continue at the Speedway on Friday when the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series kicks off its three-day test session in preparation for the Feb. 16 Florida Dodge Dealers 250. The test session is free and open to the public with access through the lobby of DAYTONA USA(DIS PR). Have some images of the Dodge testing at Daytona, see my Dodge Image page(1-17-2001)

UPDATE: from SpeedVision, about the Dodge Engines: Engine problems, especially water leaks and cooling trouble, were reported in early runs of the new Dodge engine, which combines a hemi-style block with a GM-type top end (siamesed valves at 12 to 14deg). Lead engineer Tim Culbertson scoffed that those alleged problems, saying a few minor difficulties appeared which were solved quickly. "We had a water lead in a block, but that problem was pretty much resolved in 10 days, and parts were available in 10 days," Culbertson said. "We found that problem, solved it, made parts." Culbertson said the new engines had been run as much as 1200mi, with rebuilds after 600mi, without failure of any kind(SpeedVision)(1-17-2001)
