Vegas Testing Mon-Thurs UPDATE Day 1: four day's of Winston Cup and BGN testing starts today, Jan 28th at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Over 30 Cup drivers/teams are scheduled to be there. See my Testing 2002 page for the lists and info(1-28-2002) UPDATE: The sky in Las Vegas was a medium blue but it turned out to be a gray day as NASCAR Winston Series and NASCAR Busch Series teams began four days of testing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The color gray was very much in vogue as most teams tested cars clad only in primer and minimal identification. Only two Winston Cup Series drivers - 2001 champion Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton - tested in cars that actually resembled the racers fan see on TV each week. Elliott Sadler, driver of the #21 Motorcraft Ford, was the quickest -- unofficially - with a lap time of 31.93sec - 169.120mph in qualifying trim. Defending Winston Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon was fastest car (unofficially) in race trim. The day's weather was unseasonably cold, and a few forecasts predicted precipitation - snow or rain, depending on whom you listen to - for Monday night and/or Tuesday morning. #12-Ryan Newman did not test today as scheduled, and #11-Brett Bodine's team has not arrived yet. Today's activities included a press conference, hosted by LVMS and Boyd Gaming Group, to announce a multi-year extension of Sam's Town Hotel & Gambling Hall's sponsorship of the annual NASCAR Busch event, the Sam's Town 300. The Las Vegas hotel and casino has been the sole sponsor of LVMS' Busch Series race since its inception in 1997. Winston Cup lap times/speeds (provided by team members):
#21-Elliott Sadler - 31.93sec, 169.120mph
#24-Jeff Gordon - 32.15, 167.963
#48-Jimmie Johnson - 32.30, 167.183

#74-Chad Little - 33.60, 160.714 (LVMS PR/Site, with testing photos)(1-28-2002) AND Virtually every Cup and Busch team will be in Las Vegas or Talladega this week. #28-Ricky Rudd won't be, but declined because he's recovering from recent back surgery. #90-Rick Mast won't be, but his wife is facing surgery this week.(Daily Press)(1-29-2002)
