Atlanta Testing: #46-Todd Bodine set the pace on a full day of testing at Atlanta Motor Speedway with a top speed of 188.636mph (29.39 seconds). Winston Cup drivers Jeremy Mayfield, Buckshot Jones, Brett Bodine, and Hermie Sadler, as well as ARCA driver Larry Foyt, were also testing Wednesday at AMS in preparation for the Nov. 17-19 NAPA 500 weekend. Todd Bodine ran his fast lap in a third Haas/Carter Motorsports car, which he will run in the NAPA 500. Bodine is expected to take over the seat vacated when Waltrip retires this season. #11-Brett Bodine was second fastest of the day with a lap of 187.045mph. The track record is held by Geoffrey Bodine, 197.478 mph set in 1997. Geoffrey Bodine is also expected to run the NAPA 500 in a third Andy Petree Racing car, teaming with Kenny Wallace and Joe Nemechek. #12-Jeremy Mayfield’s fast lap of the day was 185.915 mph, and Buckshot Jones, who will run the NAPA 500 with his own team – Buckshot Racing – had a fast lap at 183.942mph. Sadler, a BGN veteran, is expected to run the #60 Power Team Chevy at Atlanta and ran a fast lap of 184.010mph. And in his first laps around Atlanta in an ARCA car, Foyt had a fast lap of 180.525mph(AMS PR)(11-8-2000)

Atlanta Testing UPDATE 2 - Bodine to run Atlanta?: Winston Cup drivers Jeremy Mayfield and Todd Bodine and ARCA driver Shawna Robinson tested Monday at Atlanta Motor Speedway in preparation for the NAPA 500 weekend Nov. 17-19. Mayfield, who will race in the Winston Cup season-finale NAPA 500, turned a best lap 187.678mph in the #12-Mobil One Ford, which was the fastest lap of the day. The Winston Cup qualifying record is a 197.478, set in 1997 by Todd Bodine's older brother, Geoffrey. Todd Bodine, who was testing the #66 Haas/Carter Motorsports car driven by Darrell Waltrip, had a best lap 187.487mph. Robinson, who will run the ARCA finale Georgia Boot 400 this November, ran a top lap of 183.333mph. The ARCA qualifying record is 184.345 mph, set in Nov. 1998 by Bobby Hamilton Jr(actually it is 188.021 held by Derrick Gilchrist in the Andy Petree Racing Chevy)(AMS PR).

UPDATE 2: Bodine will test a Travis Carter Ford at Atlanta again on Wednesday, supposedly will run the #46 Ford in a third Carter Ford at Atlanta in the season finale. Also it is expected that the formal announcement of Bodine taking over the #66 BigKmart Ford in 2001 at Homestead this weekend(11-7-2000)

More Homestead Testing II: Hermie Sadler and Ricky Hendrick ran the fastest unofficial practice laps for their respective Cup and BGN teams on Tuesday, the final day of testing at Homestead. Sadler ran a lap of 154.950mph in the #60 Power Team Winston Cup Chevy owned by Joe Bessey, beating the time of 154.639mph recorded on Monday by Kevin Harvick, driving Dale Earnhardt’s #3 GM Goodwrench Chevy. Hendrick unofficially shattered the Speedway’s BGN track record, running a lap of 150.796mph in the #24 GMAC Chevry owned by his father, Rick Hendrick. Hut Stricklin holds the track BGN record at 149.456mph. The team will field a pair of Chevy in the Nov. 11 Miami 300, to be driven by Hendrick(#14 GMAC Chevy) and Winston Cup driver Jeff Gordon(#24 Pepsi Chevy). David Green, the Homestead-Miami Speedway Winston Cup track record holder, assisted the Hendrick team during the test, and also bettered the track BGN record with a lap of 150.292mph. Also impressive in Tuesday’s final testing was Geoffrey Bodine, who ran the third-fastest lap of pre-race testing, 152.715mph, driving the #98 Miccosukee Ford owned by Chip MacPherson. More Homestead Testing: Kevin Harvick tested the #3 GM Goodwrench Chevy at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Monday, his first “official” NASCAR Winston Cup test session. Harvick turned the fastest lap of the NASCAR Winston Cup testing for the Nov. 12th Pennzoil 400 presented by Discount Auto Parts Cup race. Havrick ran a fast lap of 154.639mph. Harvick’s fast lap bettered Ricky Rudd’s speed from last week 154.286mph and was just short David Green’s Winston Cup track record of 155.759 mph. Also testing at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Monday were Hermie Sadler in Joe Bessey’s #60-PowerTeam Chevrolet, Geoffrey Bodine in the #98-Miccosukee Ford fielded by Chip MacPherson, and David Green in Ricky Hendrick’s GMAC Busch Series Chevrolet. Homestead Testing UPDATE 4: Homestead-Miami Speedway will be holding a test session for several of the top NASCAR Winston Cup Series teams on Tuesday/Wednesday, October 24-25. Some drivers that will test include: #26-Jimmy Spencer, #20-Tony Stewart, #18-Bobby Labonte, #99-Jeff Burton, #24-Jeff Gordon, #5-Terry Labonte, #77-Robert Pressley, #10-Johnny Benson and others(HMS PR)(10-23-2000)

Phoenix Testing: Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman, spent two days at Phoenix International Raceway this past week working on qualifying setups in preparation for the upcoming Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race. Busch, who will bein the Cup series full time next season driving the #97 Roush Racing Ford Taurus. Busch is still unsure about 2001 sponsorship for the #97 Ford which currently carries the John Deere colors and he will have a special paint job for the Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500. Busch made contact with the wall during the two-day test but was not injured. Ryan Newman will be driving #02 ALLTEL-sponsored cars for Penske Racing South next season in a variety of series, 4 ARCA races, 12 Busch races and 7 Winston Cup races; and then, hopefully, a full Cup season in 2002 with an eye on Rookie-of-the-Year honors. Wind Tunnel Stuff: Teams were reluctant to give numbers, but it appears the Chevrolets topped the field in the wind tunnel this week and the Fords were best in the engine horsepower tests. The Pontiacs, as usual, were in the middle(Times-Dispatch)(10-21-2000)

Testing at Kentucky: hearing Hendrick Motorsports is at Kentucky Speedway testing the #5 Kelloggs Chevy and the #25 MH2.com Chevy on October 17-18th. Hearing #20-Tony Stewart was there also(10-17-2000)

Atlanta Testing: Expected to test at Atlanta are #5-Terry Labonte and #10-Johnny Benson. Labonte is scheduled to test Oct. 10-11, and Benson is scheduled to test Oct. 11-12 in preparation for the Nov. 19 NAPA 500 season finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Homestead Testing: On Wednesday, Oct. 25, Homestead-Miami Speedway will hold a major NASCAR Winston Cup test session to help teams prepare for the Nov. 12 Pennzoil 400(Homestead-Miami PR)(10-6-2000)

Talladega Testing: #24-Gordon was at Talladega Superspeedway Tuesday concluding a two-day test session with his Hendrick Motorsports #24 DuPont Chevy team. The Ultra Motorsports' #7 Nations Rent Chevy with Mike Wallace and the Bessey Motorsports' #60 Power Team Chevy wi th Dick Trickle were also back at the track on Tuesday. The majority of testing at Talladega has concerned the new rules implemented by NASCAR for the 32nd running of the Winston Cup Series Winston 500 on Sunday, Oct. 15. Winston Cup drivers will return to the track on Oct. 13 for Ricochet Qualifying Day. Gordon, who drove in the Daytona test that culminated in the new rules, said the changes may create more side-by-side racing – which Talladega fans see each year. Gordon said the Daytona test did indicate drivers may feel a few changes once the green flag drops, although qualifying speeds may be the same as in April.(Talladega Superspeedway PR) No speeds reported(10-4-2000)

Talladega Testing: NASCAR's announcement of rule changes at Talladega Superspeedway means more testing time for some Winston Cup Series teams. On Monday, a few Winston Cup teams took advantage of cooler temperatures and blue skies as the 32nd running of the Winston 500 gets closer. Mike Wallace was at Talladega Superspeedway testing for the Ultra Motorsports #7 team and Michael Waltrip. Jeff Gordon and the #24 Hendrick Motorsports team and Dick Trickle with Bessey Motorsports' #60 crew were also at Talladega Superspeedway. All three teams will be back on Tuesday to conclude the test session as teams prepare for the Ricochet Qualifying Day and the Winston 500(Talladega Superspeedway PR)(10-3-2000)

Atlanta Testing: Many drivers from the Winston Cup and ARCA series have scheduled test sessions at Atlanta Motor Speedway for Oct. 10-12th. #18-Bobby Labonte, #5-Terry Labonte, #20-Tony Stewart, #10-Johnny Benson, #1-Steve Park and #97-Kurt Busch are among drivers expected to test next month in preparation for the Nov. 19 NAPA 500. Several ARCA drivers are also expected to participate in a Hoosier Tire test early next month as they ready for the Nov. 18 Georgia Boot 400. Atlanta Motor Speedway will open the grandstands for fans to watch several test sessions, which are generally closed to the public, free of charge(see the AMS site for info and tickets)(9-28-2000)

Lowes Testing UPDATE 2: In preparation for the Oct. 8 UAW-GM Quality 500 Cup race, Lowe’s Motor Speedway has invited all NASCAR Winston Cup teams to participate in a two-day open testing session at the 1.5-mile superspeedway on Tuesday, Sept. 19th from 4:00 - 10:00pm/et and on Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 8:00am - 4:00pm/et. The following drivers/teams are scheduled to test: #11-Brett Bodine, #16-Kevin Lepage, #21-Elliott Sadler, #22-Ward Burton, #27-Mike Bliss, #33-Joe Nemechek, #36-Kenny Schrader, #44-Steve Grissom, #85 Carl Long(was there, had reported he was not), #93-Dave Blaney, #96-Andy Houston and #98-Jeff Fuller(LMS PR)(9-15-2000)

UPDATE 2: Thirteen Cup teams participated in a two-day testing session Tuesday and Wednesday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and crew members and drivers found the two sessions to literally be as different as night and day. Tuesday night’s runs were conducted under the lights, simulating conditions for the Oct. 4 Winston Pole Night, while Wednesday’s laps were made in the heat of the day, similar to conditions expected for the Oct. 8 UAW-GM Quality 500. Driving a new #21 Citgo Ford Taurus built by Roush Racing and fielded by the Wood Brothers, Elliott Sadler was unofficially the fastest Tuesday evening, stopping the watches with a lap of 183.112mph. #11-Brett Bodine was 2nd at 183.050mph, others: #16-Kevin Lepage 182.741; #33-Joe Nemechek and #97-Kurt Busch ran 182.063. #22-Ward Burton, #36-Kenny Schrader and #9-Stacy Compton were among the drivers who concentrated on chassis setups Tuesday and never made a simulated qualifying lap. Other drivers participating in the test were #27-Mike Bliss, #98-Jeff Fuller, #85-Carl Long, #93-Dave Blaney and #96-Andy Houston. Busch and Houston were forced to skip the Wednesday portion of the test due to Craftsman Truck Series commitments in Dover. Houston’s teammate, Scott Pruett, took over the #96 Ford Wednesday while Busch’s #97 team skipped Wednesday’s activities.
SOME NOTES: Kurt Busch spun the #97 Ford coming off turn four early Tuesday evening, but did not make wall contact. Recently named to take over as driver of the #27 Eel River Racing Pontiac next season, Kenny Wallace turned several laps in one of the team’s two cars Wednesday. Wallace was watching from atop the team’s transporter Tuesday evening as Mike Bliss put the two #27 Pontiacs through their paces when crew chief Barry Dodson decided to let Wallace try one of the cars during the daytime session. With Wallace doing most of the driving Wednesday, he, Dodson and Bliss talked extensively throughout the day as Wallace offered suggestions on setup changes. The two-day test marked the first time Jeff Fuller and the new MacPherson Motorsports tested at a Winston Cup track. Geoffrey Bodine, recently released from the #60 machine owned by Joe Bessey, was in the garage area Tuesday evening chatting with drivers and crew members. Testing at Martinsville: Kyle Petty tested with the #45 Sprint Chevy race team on Tuesday at Martinsville Speedway in preparation for the team’s first Winston Cup race with Kyle at the wheel. Petty along with #99-Jeff Burton, #19-Casey Atwood, #31-Mike Skinner, and #75-Wally Dallenbach began a two-day test session for the NAPA AutoCare 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race on October 1. Petty will make his first Winston Cup start with the team for which his son, Adam, was the driver before his fatal crash earlier this year at New Hampshire. Kyle has been driving the Sprint Chevrolet in the Busch Series, but testing with the team is a new experience(Martinsville Speedway PR)(9-19-2000)

Testing for NHIS UPDATE: The #3 RCR team of driver Dale Earnhardt spent most of the day Tuesday at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, a 1/2-mile flat track located outside of Greenville, SC, to test their engine setup for New Hampshire. The two Winston Cup teams Earnhardt owns - those of #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. and #1-Steve Park - are planning to test Wednesday at Milwaukee. Richard Childress, Earnhardt's car owner, had booked Greenville-Pickens in advance so his BGN driver, Kevin Harvick, could test. Earnhardt's team joined Harvick's Tuesday, with Harvick taking turns with both cars, and turning more than 50 laps with Earnhardt's #3 Chevy(That's Racin')(9-13-2000)
UPDATE: #99-Jeff Burton and #1-Steve Park tested the new NHIS restrictor plate engines and configurations at the Milwaukee Mile, simulatating restart and qualifying scenarios. In between sessions, Roush Racing and DEI crew members changed transmissions and worked specifically with transmission and rear end gear changes. Park had both cars on hand which will leave Milwaukee and go directly to New Hampshire(TNN and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). Speeds? hearing from a source at the test that the speeds were in the 116mph area, the BGN pole this year at the track was 121.572mph(9-15-2000)

Bye-Bye Testing? on TNN's Inside NASCAR, Steve Waid reported that NASCAR is looking into ways to eliminate testing, totally, with rookies being the exception. At present, teams (a team being one car, the #6 and #99 are part of the Roush team but for testing is considered one team each) can test seven times, rookies ten at race tracks that hold Winston Cup races. A team can test as often as they want at non-Winston Cup tracks like Greenville-Pickens or Kentucky Speedway. Some team also do Goodyear tire testing and NASCAR has a few mandatory tests, no word if these would be included in the elimination, if it happens(8-27-2000)

UPDATE: #18-Bobby Labonte was the fastest during testing at Richmond on Tuesday: Unofficial speeds were - #18-Labonte 123.119mph, #93-Blaney 120.859, and #71-Marcis 116.782. Also testing were BGN drivers #20-Hubert, #6-Joe Bessey, ASAA Driver Scott Wimmer in a Bil Davis Pontiac, #68-Jay Fogleman and #15-Elliott Sadler(will run the APR BGN car at RIR). Darlington Testing: hearing that the #99-Burton, #6-Martin, #28-Rudd and #20-Stewart cars are testing at Darlington Raceway as well as Martins #60 BGN car(8-22-2000)

Testing Limits? There is growing support among Winston Cup crews for a major NASCAR cutback in testing. NASCAR allows teams seven tests(ten for rookies) a season at Cup tracks and unlimited testing on other tracks. One proposal is for NASCAR to expand that testing limit to include all NASCAR-sanctioned tracks, including non-Cup venues like Kentucky Speedway. Another proposal is to eliminate testing at Winston Cup tour tracks entirely, except for rookies(PitNow)(8-21-2000)

Bristol Testing: Drivers testing at Bristol Motor Speedway Monday were #94-Bill Elliott and #16-Kevin Lepage along with BGN drivers #24-Ricky Hendrick and David Green(in the #34 or helping Hendrick? not sure). The test was extended into Monday night so drivers could get accustomed to the cooler conditions as the Races in two weeks will be at night. #44-Kyle Petty, #31-Elliott Sadler and possibly Tim Fedewa will test at BMS on Tuesday. #40-Sterling Marlin and several other drivers from Team Sabco(Ganassi Racing) are scheduled to test at BMS Wednesday and Thursday(Bristol Herald Courier(link good for Tues only) and see an image at the Bristol Motor Speedway site. I hear Ted Musgrave will test the #01 Cup car and the #82 BGN car at Bristol for Sabco/Ganassi(8-15-2000)

Indy Testing UPDATE 2 oops: hearing the three Hendrick Motorsports teams, #24 DuPont Chevy, #25-Michael Holigan Chevy and the #5-Kelloggs Chevy along with #4-Bobby Hamilton tested at Indy on Monday and Tuesday(24-25th), no word on who drove the Hendrick cars. #13-Robby Gordon is also supposed to be testing at Indy this week
UPDATE: Bobby Hamilton and the Morgan-McClure Motorsports #4 team unofficially broke the track record during a two-day test session at Indianapolis. The test, which took place on Monday, July 24 and Tuesday, July 25, was the second for the Kodak MAX Film team. Hamilton turned in a fast lap of 181.370mph, which is the fastest speed clocked in a NASCAR Winston Cup car at the Brickyard. Watkins Glen Testing Day Two UPDATE: #6-Mark Martin was fastest on the second day of Winston Cup testing at Watkins Glen International. #87-Ron Fellows and #23-Boris Said were not too far behind Martin while the drivers shake down their cars for the upcoming Global Crossing @ The Glen. All the times reported were faster than Rusty Wallace's pole lap (121.234 mph) at last year’s Frontier @ The Glen. Jerry Nadeau is with a new team, Hendrick Motorsport with Michael Holigan.com sponsorship, and he hopes that he can place another top 5 or possibly his first ever win on the historic road course(Watkins Glen Site see many images there on the test)(7-26-2000)

Watkins Glen Testing UPDATE: Many Cup drivers/teams will test at Watkins Glen International on Monday July 24, 2000, to prepare for the Global Crossing @ the Glen on August 13, 2000. More Restrictor Testing: NASCAR officials have invited one Jack Roush's teams and another team (presumably a General Motors group) to participate in further tests aimed at finding ways to open up the engines at the restricted tracks. Roush and Chevrolet owner Richard Childress took part in a test after the April Talladega race at which certain aerodynamic impediments were tried in attempts to find ways around the hated restrictor plates used at Daytona and Talladega(SpeedVision)(7-10-2000)

UPDATE: Dale Jarrett, Ricky Rudd and Jerry Nadeau were testing out new cars Tuesday night at Daytona and were finding their speeds slower than their last run at Daytona in February thanks to a few rule changes by NASCAR. All three drivers had their fastest laps in their new cars with Nadeau turning the fastest time at 184.805mph. Jarrett had a fast lap of 184.049mph and Rudd turned a lap of 183.673mph. After having to give up their Daytona 500 winning car to DAYTONA USA, the #88 Ford Quality Care/Ford Credit team was left a car short, so they brought a brand new Taurus to this week’s test session. Ricky Rudd, driver of the No. 28 Texaco Ford and Jarrett’s Robert Yates teammate, was testing a brand new car as well as the car he won the Gatorade 125 mile qualifier in during Speedweeks 2000. The lone Chevrolet Monte Carlo sharing the track with the Yates teams was piloted by Jerry Nadeau, driver of the #25 Michael Holigan Chevy. Although Nadeau was without a teammate for tonight’s test, his efforts would not be entirely self serving as the test will help to enhance the whole Hendrick Motorsports team. UPDATE: Wally Dallenbach bounced between his #75 RotoZip Tools Ford stock car and a Corvette sports car like the smattering of raindrops at Daytona International Speedway on Tuesday. After a much needed rain shower, Dallenbach tested his team’s qualifying setup for the July 1 Pepsi 400 and then gave the 3.56 mile road course a run through with officials for the Paul Revere 250. Dallenbach put the #75 stock car through its paces first under daylight and finished under the bright lights of the world famous superspeedway posting a best lap of 183.299mph. 1999's pole speed was 194.860mph at the Pepsi 400 BUT that was before the new, smaller restricter plate was put in use(at Talladega in April). Ricky Rudd was second-quickest with a lap clocked at 180.904mph in the Texaco Havoline Ford while Adam Petty was next at 179.282 mph in the #45 Sprint Chevy. Lowes testing: Fifteen Cup drivers and teams set up camp at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Monday evening for the first of two nights of testing in preparation for the May 20th running of The Winston and the May 28 Coca-Cola 600. Among those on hand were Winston Cup champions #88-Dale Jarrett and #94-Bill Elliott along with 2000 race winners #8-Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and #6-Mark Martin. With computers playing an ever-increasing role in testing, most teams went about their work methodically instead of going for an all-out qualifying lap during this initial night of testing. “We’ve come here before and chased the stopwatch. We’re not doing that this time. In fact, we haven’t changed a spring or a shock on either car,” said veteran Ken Schrader(#36). “We’ve got a bunch of things we are trying. We’ll do one thing, see how it works and then move on to another.” One driver who did make a qualifying run shortly after sunset was Ted Musgrave in the Fenley/Moore #15 Ford. The Wisconsin native turned a lap of 181.512mph in his unsponsored machine. (record pole speed record is 185.230mph) “These are both brand new race cars,” said crew chief Joey Knuckles. “We thought we had a sponsor and built seven new cars during the winter, then the deal fell apart at the last minute. Sears Point Testing: Dale Earnhardt Jr. made his first trip to Sears Point Raceway this week for a NASCAR Winston Cup Test Session, and he won't soon forget it. Earnhardt Jr., who was joined in the Tuesday-Wednesday session by #18-Bobby Labonte, #43-John Andretti and 31-Steve Park, survived several spins on the twisting 10-turn, 1.94-mile road course and came away with much-needed experience. NASCAR comes to Sears Point Raceway June 22-25 for the Save Mart/Kragen 350. Earnhardt Jr. turned one of his best laps in the Wednesday morning session at 1 minute, 13.4 seconds(95.150mph). Park reported the fastest time of the session at 1:12.12(96.839mph), followed by Andretti (1:12.55 - 96.265mph) and Labonte (1:13.1 - 95.540mph). Andretti has placed third the last two years at Sears Point, while Labonte was 27th a year ago. Earnhardt Jr. prepared for the test session by using a simulator, but still found the terrain tough. He twice suffered spins exiting Turn 7, both times landing in the gravel trap. DW Tests at Lowes: Darrell Waltrip tested his #66 Big Kmart/Rt 66 Ford at Lowes Motor Speedway on Wednesday and will again on Thursday(NOL) AND Darrell Waltrip found himself with a little time to kill Wednesday at Lowe's Motor Speedway, so he wound up being part of a news conference to announce the $6,262,701 total purse for the track's May events(That's Racin')(4-20-2000)

Sears Point Testing: Budweiser and Sears Point Raceway will host a Media Luncheon on Wednesday, April 26, to introduce NASCAR Winston Cup rookie driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. to the Northern California media. This will mark the first-ever Northern California appearance for Earnhardt Jr., who will be participating in a two-day test session on the 10-turn, 1.94-mile road course in preparation for the Save Mart/Kragen 350, June 22-25. Other drivers participating in the test session include #18-Bobby Labonte, #43-John Andretti and #17-Matt Kenseth(Sears Point PR)(4-20-2000)

Slow Down at 'Dega UPDATE 2: Richard Childress and Jack Roush have prepared cars for a special test here Monday in an effort to slow Winston Cup cars down enough so they won't need a carburetor restrictor plate. Nelson said teams came to him with some ideas, and he decided to try them out on the race track. One of the ideas is a bigger "greenhouse," the size and shape of the rear window area(Total Sports). Ned Jarrett's idea is to stand the windshield up, like the trucks, that'll slow them down(4-15-2000)

UPDATE 2: On RPM2Nite the two cars being tested were shown. The #6 Ford was driven by Matt Kanseth and had some sheet metal modifications done around the nose and hood. The #3 Chevy was driven by Dave Marcis and supposedly had a raised roof(by one inch) and widened by 2 inches. Also it was speculated on the show the the windshield was being tested at different angles. The cars with present restrictor plates and modifications were slowed down by 3 seconds. Using a larger restrictor plate (unknown size) the 3 seconds were regained. More testing will be done on Tuesday(RPM2Nite)(4-17-2000)

Talladega Testing? UPDATE: Teams will run with a smaller restrictor plate at Talladega next week and will be allowed to use their own shock absorbers on the fronts of their cars. Supposedly, NASCAR is not through looking for ways to improve the racing at the circuit's two restrictor-plate tracks and will test a high-drag car on the Monday following the DieHard 500. The car would have a taller "green house," the term used for the compartment in which the driver sits, and be a bit wider than the slicked-down aerodynamically honed cars now in use by top teams. That kind of car would create a bigger "hole" in the air as it races down the straightaway, increasing drag and thereby slowing speeds somewhat. The bigger hole in the air would also increase the effects of the draft on cars running in line and might eventually even allow the use of restrictor plates with bigger holes, increasing both horsepower and throttle response (paraphrased from That's Racin') no idea if this will be one team, which make, or if all teams who wish to test at Talladega next Monday will be allowed to. UPDATE: Roush Racing, Childress Racing and Morgan McClure Motorsports have been invited to Talladega next Monday for a novel NASCAR test at Talladega to find new ways to make disgruntled Winston Cup drivers happier at the tour's two biggest tracks. Drivers have long complained about being bunched too tightly without enough horsepower to break away at Daytona and Talladega. So NASCAR officials will try to figure out how to add enough aerodynamic drag to these cars to allow drivers a lot more horsepower, while still keeping speeds around 190 mph. Las Vegas Testing Day III: The three-day test ended today and Scott Pruett blitzed the field in the #32 Ford. Pruett consistently ran laps under 32 seconds, and had a fast lap of 31.750 or 170.015 mph. That was over half-a-second faster than Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Tuesday. Weather and track conditions were no different in comparison. #42-Kenny Irwin was second-fastest today at 166.666 mph (32.419 seconds). Fastest BGN car was #34-David Green 162.652 (33.219 seconds). The $5.00 admission that was charged to spectators with all money going to Speedway Children's Charities equaled $10,000. Not bad for weekdays in Vegas(LVMS)(2-2-2000)

LVMS Testing UPDATE: have gotten some email saying Shane Hall had wrecked in the #0 BGN Chevy. UPDATE: I found out what happened: Hall actually flipped about five times down the back stretch, but his only injury was a hairline fracture of his left ankle. He was taken to the University Medical Center, but returned to the track before testing was finished. He said he is planning on getting back in his other car on Tuesday. That is good news. As for CUP speeds, #12-Jeremy Mayfield was the quickest today, with #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr., #9-Stacy Compton and #24-Jeff Gordon were close behind. The LVMS site should have speeds posted later -- UPDATE 2: The first day of CUp and BGN testing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway consisted of Dale Earnhardt's return to the driver.s seat, an accident and a Ford leading the field. Dale Earnhardt returned his race car for the first time since off-season backsurgery. Monday's test ended Earnhardt's longest period out of a race car since he began his motorsports career in 1979. Earnhardt has not driven his #3 Chevy Monte Carlo since the Nov. 21 season finale at Atlanta. Earnhardt didn't turn the fastest time of the day, but did manage a respectable time of approximately 33.3 seconds at 162.162mph. The fastest time of the day belonged to Jeremy Mayfield. The driver of the #12 Moble 1 Ford Taurus toured the 1.5-mile superspeedway at approximately 166.153mph (32.5 seconds). Other NASCAR Winston Cup drivers who posted fast times during the first day of testing were Dale Earnhardt Jr., (32.7 seconds, 165.137mph), Stacy Compton (32.8 second, 164.643 mph) and Jeff Gordon (33.3 seconds, 162.162 mph). The only incident of the day occurred when NASCAR Busch Series driver Shane Hall experienced a suspected steering problem and made contact with the inside retaining wall, causing the car to roll several times down the back straightaway. "I think something broke in the steering and I just started heading straight at the inside wall," Hall said. "The car started flipping, and I don't remember much after that. I'm pretty sore, but I'm going to try and get back in the other car tomorrow." Hall received a hairline fracture of the left ankle in the accident. He was treated and released from University Medical Center and returned to the track before the end of the day. NASCAR Winston West driver Sean Woodside will be on hand to test Halls car Tuesday. A total of 23 NASCAR teams tested at LVMS Monday. Fifteen of the teams were from CUP and eight teams were from the BGN. CUP drivers who tested Monday were Chad Little, Ricky Craven, Jeff Gordon, Robby Gordon, Earnhardt, Earnhardt Jr., Mayfield, Ken Schrader, Wally Dallenbach, Kenny Wallace, Dave Blaney, Matt Kenseth, Compton, Jeff Fuller and Derrike Cope. BGN drivers testing Monday were Kevin Grubb, Hall, Jay Sauter, Chad Chaffin, Casey Atwood, Gus Wasson, Mike Dillon and Kevin Harvick. Testing at LVMS will continue through Wednesday. DIS Ford Testing for Thursday: #85 Carl Long in the Mansion Motorsports Ford turned a fast lap time today at Daytona Intl Speedway of 184.509mph. Long was the only participant in the Ford test session at Daytona this week(Racin' Network)(1-13-2000)
Ford's Turn UPDATE: Ford tests at Daytona today and Thursday....but poof, only one team is there and possible two on Thursday. Only two drivers are scheduled to be there - #90 Ed Berrier and #85 Carl Long. Carl Long reported today, but as of this afternoon had been on the track only a couple of times. So looks like no speeds will be posted today. Hear there will be more Ford teams there on Thursday. Talladega Testing: Ten NASCAR Winston Cup and BGN teams began a two-day test session at Talladega Superspeedway in preparation for the upcoming racing season. Three Cup and seven BGN teams were on the track at Talladega Wednesday for the first day of two day testing. Mike Dillon tested the #3 Chevy, Jeff Fuller ran the #27 Viagra Pontiac and Steve Park was in the #1 Pennzoil Chevy for the Cup teams. Texas Testing: Ward Burton, Jeremy Mayfield and Mike Skinner tested at Texas Motor Speedway for two days of Goodyear tire testing, Tuesday Nov. 30 and Wednesday Dec. 1st. Mayfield, driver of the #12 Mobil 1 Ford Taurus, and Skinner, driver of the #31 Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse Chevrolet Monte Carlo, were both testing in the 2000 versions of each car. Burton, driver of the #22 Caterpillar/Siemens Pontiac, had engine trouble early on Tuesday, but dropped in a back-up race engine and resumed testing. Burton and Mayfield will be back at the speedway on Wednesday to continue testing for Goodyear. The test is closed to the public. Tire Testing at Texas: Three drivers - one from each car make - will take part in a Goodyear tire test Nov. 29 and 30 at Texas Motor Speedway. Mike Skinner, in the No. 31 Chevrolet, Ward Burton in the No. 22 Pontiac and Jeremy Mayfield, in the No. 12 Ford, will participate in the test. Pruett Tests at Talladega UPDATE: hearing that Scott Pruett is testing the #32 Tide PPI/Cal Wells Ford at Talladega on Monday and Tuesday(Nov 8-9th)(11-8-1999) -- UPDATE: Scott Pruett and the PPI Motorsports team wrapped up a two-day test session Wednesday at Talladega Superspeedway. Pruett is making the jump from CART to Winston Cup in 2000, and this week's testing at Talladega marked only the second time Pruett's team has been together to prepare the Cal Wells-owned Ford Tauruses for their rookie season. Pruett Testing Day II: Before Tuesday, Lake Tahoe, Nevada native Scott Pruett didn’t even know where Darlington, SC was on a map. But he met the infamous wall of Darlington Raceway face-to-face after coming to town for the first time. Pruett, a long-time racer, is making his debut in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series next year, and he chose Darlington Raceway to be the place of initiation for his 2000 Winston Cup ride with PPI Motorsports. On Tuesday and Wednesday he tested at the track “Too Tough To Tame,” (which is not known for a friendly welcome to rookies), and actually, other than a brief encounter with the Turn 4 wall, he faired pretty well. At the end of the day Wednesday he was running a 29.40, which converts to 167.265 mph, and would have been barely quick enough to enter him into the field of 1999 Pepsi Southern 500 competitors. Not bad when you consider he wasn’t even running on a qualifying set-up. The performance is not all that surprising when you consider Pruett’s racing background. He has been involved in motorsports for more than 18 years, and has excelled in the CART series in the last decade. He is a two-time SCCA Trans-Am champion, and has experience in virtually every type of race car. On top of that, he has some of the best in the business by his side with Cal Wells of PPI Motorsports as team owner, Doug Richert as crew chief, and long-time Winston Cup sponsor Tide backing him up. But even so, why start out at Darlington, the toughest track on the NASCAR circuit? Well, Pruett just figured that if he could drive at Darlington he could drive anywhere. Team Manager Joe Garone said that the crew was pleased at the end of testing Wednesday, and that Pruett has a natural feel for driving Darlington Raceway and a Winston Cup car. “It’s amazing how quickly he has adapted to the differences of open-wheeled driving to that of Winston Cup,” he said. “We feel like he’s just a natural. We were just hoping to leave here with the cars in tact,” he laughed. Wells Testing UPDATE: hearing that the #32 Cal Wells' Winston Cup team is testing at Darlington today and tomorrow(Tuesday and Wednesday) -- UPDATE: Scott Pruett's first day of testing got off to a late start because of rain, but overall the team was pleased with the apparent results. Pruett did not get a Darlington stripe on his debut day, and seemed to be catching on to driving a Winston Cup car by the end of the day. Pruett plans to test all day on Wednesday, November 3rd. Ted Musgrave is at Darlington helping the team test(11-2-1999)
Atlanta Testing: Bill Elliott was the fastest in testing Monday at Atlanta Motor Speedway with a fast lap of 187.932mph. Meanwhile, Mike Skinner, Jeremy Mayfield and Andy Hillenburg(#30) all went 185.418mph while Ricky Craven had a speed of 183.576mph and Stacy Compton went 180.586mph.
