2006 Daytona 500 Testing Speeds, News and Results

2006 Daytona Testing Dates set: Teams in the odd-number rankings in the car owner points after Sunday’s race [at Chicago] will test at Daytona on Jan. 9-11 with Jan. 12 as the rain date. Teams in the even-number rankings in the car owner points standings will test at Daytona on Jan. 16-18 with a rain date of Jan. 19. Of course, NASCAR allows some teams to switch test dates if needed.(News and Record)(7-12-2005)
UPDATE on 2006 Daytona Testing: The 2006 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series will kick off with a pair of much anticipated test sessions at historic Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the prestigious season-opening 48th annual Daytona 500 on Feb. 19.
The list of teams expected to participate in the first NEXTEL Cup Series test session on Jan. 9-11 include (list is tentative and subject to change - last updated 1-5-2006 - some changes have been made due to scheduling conflicts):

All testing sessions run 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. with a noon lunch break. Fans can watch all of the January testing sessions free from the Oldfield Grandstands located just outside of DAYTONA USA.

TV Coverage: Speed Channel will carry Daytona and Las Vegas Testing Shows, a 30-minute, same-day-delay [SDD] at 7:00pm/et with scheduled replays: Jan 9-11, Nextel Cup; Jan 15, Truck Series; Jan 16-18, Nextel Cup; Jan 22, Busch Series; Feb 1 - Nextel Cup testing at Las Vegas.

NASCAR Preseason Thunder Fan Fest dates, which will coincide with January's NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and NASCAR Busch Series testing sessions at the "World Center of Racing," will be held on the following days:
* Jan. 10: NASCAR Nextel Cup Fan Fest
* Jan. 13: NASCAR Craftsman Truck Fan Fest
* Jan. 17: NASCAR Nextel Cup Fan Fest
* Jan. 21: NASCAR Busch Fan Fest
The Fan Fest events, which include fan forums, bands, show cars, pit stop demonstrations and displays, start at 5 p.m. but fans will be able to enter the NEXTEL FANZONE beginning at 9 a.m. to watch all of the exciting testing action. Admissions for the NEXTEL Cup Fan Fest dates are $15 while Busch and Craftsman Truck Series admissions are $10.

Stewart skips Daytona testing: Considering Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart's dramatic Daytona victory in July, it's not surprising he's blowing off testing there this week to concentrate on competing in the 20th annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Okla. Smoke won the Chili Bowl title in 2002 and this year will face an expected field of 270 competitors, including Steve Kinser, Danny Lasoski and Kasey Kahne. As happened last year, Mike McLaughlin will fill in for Stewart in the #20 Chevrolet during testing.(Sporting News)(1-9-2006)

TESTING - Day 1

Day 1 - Daytona: AM: #24-Jeff Gordon led the morning sessions with a speed of 187.029mph. Gordon led a Chevy contingent in the top 3. He was followed by #48-Jimmie Johnson and #36-Bill Elliott. The new Ford Fusions made a strong debut, led by #17-Matt Kenseth with a speed of 186.023, 4th fastest. The Dodges still appear to be struggling, with the top Dodge being #19-Jeremy Mayfield, 12th fastest with a speed of 184.983mph.
PM: #36-Bill Elliott's speed if 187.219mph was the fastest of today's afternoon session. Elliott was followed by #48-Jimmie Johnson, #38-Elliott Sadler and #24-Jeff Gordon.(Cup Scene Daily)
Three drivers/teams not on the original list are testing: #23-Mike Skinner, #78-Kenny Wallace and #80-Jeff Fuller. One driver on the list has not shown up on the speed charts: #13-Greg Sacks.(1-9-2006)

Day 2 Testing - Daytona: #48-Jimmie Johnson was fastest in Tuesday's AM session with a speed of 186.966mph, followed by #24-Gordon, #20-Mike Mclaughlin, #36-Elliott and #43-Bobby Labonte. The fastest Ford was 9th, #38-Elliott Sadler. 36 cars took to the track, with 20 drivers testing.
Afternoon testing: #24-Jeff Gordon was fasetst at 188.466mph, followed by #36-Bill Elliott, #38-Elliott Sadler, #48-Jimmie Johnson and #17-Matt Kenseth. The fastest Dodge was #19-Jeremy Mayfield, 8th fastest of 35 cars.(1-10-2006)

Drafting

Day 3 Testing - Daytona: #17-Matt Kenseth was the fastest in Wednesday's morning session, with a speed of 188.403mph in drafting sessions. #38-Sadler, #12-Newman, #41-Sorenson and #21-Schrader round out the top five drivers. The fastest Chevy was #24-Jeff Gordon, which was 10th fastest. Afternoon speeds: #24-Jeff Gordon was back at the top during Wednesday afternoon's drafting practice with a speed of 189.298mph, followed by #48-Johnson, #17-Kenseth, #40-Stremme and #1-Truex Jr. 19 drivers in 31 cars tested on Wednesday, opting opt was #78-Kenny Wallace.
NOTE: Dale Earnhardt Inc. teammates Dale Eanrhardt Jr. and Martin Truex Jr. swapped seats during Wednesday's afternoon test session to evaluate each other's race cars . . .
