- 2008 Daytona Testing Dates Announced: Testing dates for the historic 50th running of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 17, 2008 at Daytona International Speedway have
been finalized. The first wave of Sprint Cup Series teams will test in preparation for "The Great American Race" on Jan. 7-9 with Jan. 10 serving as a rain date. The second wave of Sprint Cup Series testing will be Jan. 14-16 with Jan. 17 serving as a rain date. The Sprint Cup Series teams will be split into two groups based on the owner's points following the Sprint Cup race weekend at Chicagoland Speedway [see owners pts after Chicago page]. Among the drivers expected to be in the first wave of teams (odd-numbered teams in the owner's standings) will be Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer and Kurt Busch. Among the expected drivers in the second wave (even-numbered teams in the owner's standings) are Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Burton, Tony Stewart, Martin Truex Jr. and Jamie McMurray. Testing dates for Dale Earnhardt Jr., who will join Hendrick Motorsports for the 2008 season, will be announced at a later date.
Other testing dates for Preseason Thunder include:
* Jan. 4-6, Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve in preparation for the 46th anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 26-27, all teams.
* Jan. 11-13, Craftsman Truck Series in preparation for the Feb. 15 Chevy Silverado 250, all trucks
* Jan. 18-22, Busch [New sponsor name for series] Series in preparation for the Feb. 16 Camping World 300 presented by Chevy, two different sessions
NASCAR Preseason Thunder Fan Fest dates, which will coincide with January's Sprint Cup Series, Craftsman Truck Series, Busch [new name] Series and Rolex Series testing sessions at the "World Center of Racing," will be held on the following dates:
* Jan. 5: The Roar Before The Rolex 24
* Jan. 8: Nextel [Sprint] Cup Fan Fest
* Jan. 12: Craftsman Truck Fan Fest
* Jan. 15: Nextel [Sprint] Cup Fan Fest
* Jan. 19: Busch [new sponsor name] Series Fan Fest
The Fan Fest events start at 5 p.m. but fans may enter the Sprint Fanzone beginning at 9 a.m. to watch all of the exciting testing action on those days. Admissions for the Nextel Cup Fan Fest dates are $15 while Busch and Craftsman Truck Series admissions are $10. The Roar Before The Rolex 24 admission is also $10. Fans will be able to get a sneak peek on teams as they prepare for DIRECTV Speedweeks 2008 with inquisitive fan forums with many of their favorite drivers as well as enjoying all the state-of-the-art amenities in the popular Sprint Fanzone. Also included in NASCAR Preseason Thunder Fan Fests will be bands, show cars, pit stop demonstrations, displays, a silent auction and hot laps around DIS (additional charge). Fans can continue to watch all of the January testing sessions free from the Oldfield Grandstands located just outside of The Daytona 500 Experience. - DIS Offers Free Daytona 500 Qualifying to Blood Donors during Preseason Thunder: During January's Preseason Thunder Fan Fests for the Sprint Cup Series at Daytona International Speedway, race fans will get the opportunity to watch their favorite NASCAR drivers and teams prepare for the 50th running of the Daytona 500 and also earn a free ticket to Daytona 500 Qualifying presented by Kroger on Sunday, Feb. 10. During each of the NASCAR Preseason Thunder Sprint Cup Series Fan Fest nights on Jan. 8 and Jan. 15, the Florida Blood Centers will be hosting a blood drive located just outside the Turn 4 tunnel and guests that donate blood will receive a free ticket to Daytona 500 Qualifying presented by Kroger on Sunday, Feb. 10. All Sprint Cup Series teams will participate in Daytona 500 Qualifying presented by Kroger on Sunday, Feb. 10. Drivers will turn two high-speed qualifying laps on the historic 2.5-tri-oval as they try to secure a front-row starting spot in the 50th running of the Daytona 500. NASCAR Preseason Thunder Fan Fest dates, which will coincide with January's Sprint Cup Series, Craftsman Truck Series, Nationwide Series and Rolex Series testing sessions at the "World Center of Racing," will be held on the following dates:

- Stewart to test at Daytona: Tony Stewart will test the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota during the Jan. 14-16 session [2nd session] at Daytona International Speedway after skipping the session for the last three years. Sprint Cup teams will begin testing Monday [Jan 7th] and are split into two three-day sessions. Stewart will test in the second session, according to a team spokesman. The test will be the first full NASCAR test of the car of tomorrow at Daytona and will be the first NASCAR test for JGR in a Toyota after the team left Chevrolet following the 2007 Cup season.(SceneDaily.com)(1-3-2008)

- Daytona Test Notes - Session 1, Day 1: #7-Robby Gordon will test his Ford since the Dakar Rally race was cancelled; #20-Tony Stewart will test at Daytona for the first time in three years [due to the change to Toyota and the COT]; Jason Keller will test a 4th Gillett Evernham Motorsports #98 Dodge; Kirk Shelmedine will test for his old boss, Richard Chidlress, in the #33 Chevy. - NOTE: The teams are using the same wing-restrictor plate combination that was used at Talladega Superspeedway in October. The rear wing angle will be 10 degrees, and the holes in the restrictor plate are 31/32nds of an inch in diameter. The wicker bill on the wing is 1 inch. In a late change to the driver lineup, Kirk Shelmerdine is replacing Scott Wimmer in the #33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet for the test session. The #33 is a fourth RCR car. Aric Almirola is driving the #1 Dale Earnhardt Inc. car normally driven by Martin Truex Jr. Truex Jr. is expected to test the car Tuesday and Wednesday.(SceneDaily.com)(1-7-2008)
SPEEDs - Day 1 AM: 2007 Cup Champ #48-Johnson was the fastest in the opening round of practice at Daytona International Speedway with a speed of 184.782mph, followed by #5-Mears, #27B-Villeneuve, #84B-Allmendinger [2 cars, other was 6th] and #24A-Gordon. #42-Montoya was the fastest Dodge, 13th fastest and #28A-Kvapil was the fastest Ford at 14th. 26 drivers in 42 cars took to the track. SPEEDs - Day 1 PM: #48A-Johnson was fastest again of the 45 cars that tested on Monday, with a speed of 184.672mph in a Chevy. The rest of the top-5 were #5B-Mears, #18-Busch [Toyota], #84B-Allmendinger and #27B-Villeneuve. The fastest Ford was #28-Kvapil, 8th; the fastest Dodge was #42-Montoya, 14th. OVERALL Day 1: #48-Jimmie Johnson posted the fastest lap on the first day of NASCAR Preseason Thunder testing for the Sprint Cup Series with a lap of 184.782 mph in the morning session. Rounding out the top three were #5-Casey Mears at 184.475 mph and #18-Kyle Busch in his new ride at Joe Gibbs Racing at 184.064. The test session is the first shake down that NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams have had with the new winged car (Car of Tomorrow) at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the 50th running of the
Daytona 500. A surprise visitor during the first day of testing on Monday was Dale Earnhardt Jr., who stopped by DIS to see how his new Hendrick Motorsports teammates - Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears - were doing. Earnhardt Jr., who left Dale Earnhardt Inc. to join Hendrick Motorsports beginning with the 50th running of the Daytona 500, will shake down his new ride - the #88 Chevrolet - during next week's second wave of Sprint Cup Series testing. - SPEEDs - Day 2 AM: #48-Johnson continues to be the fastest after funning both of Monday's sessions as the quickest, on Tuesday AM, Johnson ran 184.763mph, followed by #27B-Villeneuve, #28B-Kvapil, #5B-Mears and #84B-Allmendinger. #42-Montoya was the fastest Dodge at 21st of the 45 cars that took laps. Martin Truex Jr. is back in the #1 DEI Chevy after spending Monday on a hunting trip, Aric Almirola tested the car on Monday. - SPEEDs - Day 2 PM: #96A-Yeley took over the leader board Tuesday afternoon as drafting practice started. Speeds only jumped up just under 3mph, with Yeley running 187.359mph, #2B-Busch was 2nd fastest, followed by #18B-Busch, #78B-Nemechek and #17A-Kenseth. 45 cars practiced.(NASCAR Media) Two incidents occurred during the afternoon session when #5-Casey Mears brushed the wall when a tire let go and #41-Reed Sorenson spun.(RacingOne)(1-8-2008)

- Daytona testing Session 1 is over - DAY 3 PM Speeds: Daytona testing is over for the first session with #18B-Busch being the fastest in a drafting session, Busch was also fast in the AM practice. #17B-Kenseth was 2nd, followed by #41B-Sorenson, #24B-Gordon and #1B-Truex Jr. No incidents were reported.(NASCAR Media)(1-9-2008)
- SPEEDs - Day 3 AM - Drafting: Toyota once again took the fastest speed in drafting practice, with #18-Busch being the fastest in the AM session at Daytona International Speedway on Wednesday with a fast lap of 187.786mph. 2nd fast was #84B-Allmendinger [fast in drafting and single car runs] then #16A-Biffle, #2B-Busch and #48B-Johnson [fastest in all the single car runs so far]. 41 cars practiced.(NASCAR Media)(1-9-2008)
