UPDATE: BlackJack Racing and Dexter Bean have decided to withdraw from the Sharpie 500 after the news of crew chief, Ryan Bergenty, breaking his ankle in three places on Tuesday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. Bergenty went to Bristol earlier than the rest of the team, on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 to take in all the racing festivities. As he hopped out of a motor coach, Bergenty's ankle rolled and he was suddenly in severe pain. Bergenty was then taken by ambulance to the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, where he is scheduled to have surgery this afternoon. Starr and the team will be sponsored by Allegro Marinade in a one race sponsorship for the Auto Club 500. “I have always dreamed about driving in the Cup Series and I am very appreciative of this opportunity that the Bean family has given me,” said Starr. “This all came together rather quickly last week in Daytona and I jumped at the chance. We were also able to secure sponsorship from Allegro Marinade at the last minute. This is really cool and I hope to put on a good performance for Allegro Marinade and BlackJack Racing.” BlackJack Racing fields the #51 Dodge in the Sprint Cup Series full-time and narrowly missed making the field in the Daytona 500 last week with Kelly Bires behind the wheel. - Bires to attempt Daytona 500: Kelly Bires will attempt to make his Sprint Cup debut in the Daytona 500 next month, but he probably won't be too busy after that. On a week when he wrapped up a deal for the biggest race of his life, Bires also learned that he no longer has the promise of any Nationwide Series races with JTG Daugherty Racing. Michael McDowell brought sponsorship for the first 16 races, Bires said. Bires could race in the second half of the year if the team finds money, but he also is free to pursue other opportunities. Bires will drive for #51 Blackjack Racing, a new, part-time team out of the ARCA series, at Daytona. The car is an ex-Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge that became extendable when that team merged with DEI and switched to Chevrolet's. "We could go there and run like crap, or we could go and run well and surprise a lot of people," Bires said. "Anything beyond making the show is an added bonus. If we make the race, we'll probably get more publicity out of that than I did out of a whole year and a half in the Nationwide Series." Blackjack plans a limited schedule for its regular driver, Dexter Bean, but with only one NASCAR short-track race to his credit, Bean has not been approved by NASCAR to race on a superspeedway.(Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)(1-21-2009)
- ARCA team to attempt Daytona: BlackJack Racing, an ARCA RE/MAX Series team from 2005-2007, plans to attempt to make the Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500. The team will use the #51 and run a Dodge. BlackJack Racing has one Nationwide Series start at Memphis Motorsports Park in 2006. BlackJack Racing will field an ARCA RE/MAX Series entry for driver Dexter Bean at Daytona next month. A formal announcement is expected within the next week. No word who will drive the car for the Daytrona 500 attrempt.(Catchfence.com)(1-17-2009)
