    NASCAR NEWS & NOTES:

Kevin Harvick’s shot at NASCAR history notwithstanding, NASCAR Busch Series regulars are also pushing toward their own late-season surges.

Paul Menard (#11 Menards Chevrolet) was a splash of gas away from his second win of the season last week at California Speedway, settling for a fourth-place finish. Ashton Lewis Jr. (#25 U.S. Marine Corps Ford) was fifth, tying the Chesapeake, Va., native’s best result of the year. Stuart, Va., native Jon Wood (#47 Armor All Ford) was eighth, his best finish in his last 11 races and Jay Sauter (#01 Western Union Chevrolet) quietly produced his third top-10 finish in the last seven events.

Jason Leffler (#38 Great Clips Chevrolet) broke into the top 10 in the points standings following California. Although he’s tied with Kenny Wallace (#22 AutoZone Ford) with 2,815 points, Leffler is listed 10th due to his two top-five finishes this year.

John Andretti (#10 ppc Racing Ford) is just 35 points out of 10th placed and is also engaged in a spirited battle with Burney Lamar (#77 Dollar General Chevrolet) for Raybestos Rookie of the Year honors. Andretti leads Lamar by just four points with eight races to go.

    On Deck: Dover International Speedway

Following an off-week for the first time since mid-May, the NASCAR Busch Series returns on Sept. 23 to Dover International Speedway for the Dover 200.

Ryan Newman is the defending winner of last year’s fall event, winning from the Busch Pole.

This past June, Jeff Burton posted the victory while Kevin Harvick won the pole.

In The Loop: Leffler A Force At Richmond

Jason Leffler seems to have picked a good time to get hot.

He clawed his way back into the NASCAR Busch Series top 10 last week at his home-state California Speedway and according to NASCAR’s Loop Data stats over the last three races at Richmond, seems poised to build on that momentum Friday night.

Leffler (third) has the best Average Running Position of NASCAR Busch Series regulars at 6.989 and has a solid Driver Rating of 115.1, again best of series regulars. By comparison, points leader Kevin Harvick boasts a 148.0 Driver Rating at Richmond, best among all drivers.

Leffler is eighth-best among Fastest Drivers Early in a Run, a crucial component at the .75-mile track as far as working for and keeping track position.

Along those same lines, Leffler also counters as one of the Fastest on Restarts where his 120.205 mph average speed ranks seventh.

He is also among the top 10 drivers (sixth) in the Fastest Laps Run category, turning 28 fast laps for an 8.3 percentage among all drivers.

Leffler is fourth at Richmond in Quality Passes – passing a car in the top 15 while under a green flag – with 47 total Quality Passes for an average of 24. He’s been able to parlay those lap-specific numbers into the #4 position among all drivers in Laps Led at Richmond in the last three series races there (75).

Leffler rounds out key Loop Data categories at Richmond by topping the Closers chart. He has moved up a total of nine positions in the last 10% of laps in each race at Richmond, gaining an average of 4.5 spots per event. Kenny Wallace – all-time leader in best top five and top-10 finishes at Richmond among active drivers – is second.

Dodge Primed For Late-Season Surge In Bill France Performance Cup Standings

With it’s first-ever NASCAR Busch Series win at California, Dodge moved closer to overtaking second-place Ford in the Bill France Performance Cup standings.

Kasey Kahne’s win gave Dodge its second victory in the last four races and with five wins on the season, the manufacturer has 153 points, seven points behind Ford (six wins, 160 points).

Chevrolet continues to lead the standings with 16 wins and 200 points.

Although Dodge is searching for its first series win at Richmond, it has some late-season momentum on its side. Last year, Dodge won four of the season’s final eight races including three in succession at Dover, Kansas and Charlotte.

Chevrolet is the all-time NASCAR Busch Series leader in manufacture wins at Richmond with 16 – nine in the last 11 races.

From The NASCAR Busch Series “25 Seasons Running” Archives

Richmond International Raceway had been a flat, one-half mile track since it was built in 1946, but the old speedway was changed in 1988 when a major makeover took place.

Richmond was lengthened to its current three-quarter mile distance with new 14 degree turns and the original oval shape was transformed into a tri-oval.

The first NASCAR Busch Series event using the new configuration took place on Sept. 10, 1988. Busch Pole winner Harry Gant led a field of 36 cars to the green flag in a race that saw six drivers swap the lead a total of eight times. Gant held off a late-race charge by then-reigning series champion Larry Pearson to win by a margin of 1.14 seconds. Gant was the third series driver to win from the pole at Richmond.
