Robby Gordon said he and NASCAR Winston Cup team owner Felix Sabates have set an 8-15 date to decide which direction they will go in 1998. Gordon has the first option to purchase the IRL equipment from Sabates for what the driver called “fair market value.” Saturday he said it all hinged on having a sponsor, which he does not have at the moment. It would not be Coors Light, he said, which is tied to Sabates. Gordon said he has options for next season, including a couple in CART, a couple in Winston Cup and the IRL. He would not reveal those plans, except to say that he and Barry Green “made a mistake” but not signing a CART deal before this season began. They could be united in ’98, Gordon admitted.
