Students in Florence, S.C., witnessed a strange sight in the parking lot of Southside Middle School Wednesday afternoon. Instead of seeing the school buses that usually transport them to and from school, they discovered a brightly colored 500 horsepower racecar. This unusual scene was actually a press conference hosted by the South Carolina Department of Education, in conjunction with South Carolina native Lyndon Amick, a NASCAR Busch Series Driver. The occasion was the unveiling of a special new racecar Amick plans to drive in this weekend’s Dura Lube 200 at the Darlington Raceway. Instead of carrying a sponsor’s logo on the hood, Amick’s #88 Chevrolet Monte Carlo bears the name of a unique curriculum enhancement program that is being piloted in South Carolina schools this fall, entitled ?????Rev It Up!????. Sponsors of the No. 88 ?????Rev It Up!????/Character Education car includes the South Carolina-based SCANA Corp., Kid’s Fuel Beverages and Powertel. See an image of the car at Jayski’s Paint Scheme Gallery and for more info see Amick’s Internet website at www.lyndonamick.com(9-2-1999)
