• Phoenix Winner: #99-Jeff Burton wins the Dura Lube 500 in the CITGO Ford, the first win for CITGO since March 20th, 1993 when Morgan Shepherd won at Atlanta in the #21 CITGO Ford. The win is Burton’s 4th of the 2000 season and he won both the Phoenix BGN and Cup races this weekend. The unofficial results can be seen at NASCAR Online(11-5-2000)
• Happy Hour practice is over at Phoenix. #36-Ken Schrader was the fastest in the Pedigree Pntiac with a speed of 129.827mph. See the speeds at NOL and a story on SpeedVision(11-4-2000)
• 2nd Round qualifying is over at Phoenix. The fastest in 2nd round was #01-Ted Musgrave with a speed of 131.277mph, but it was not fast enough to crack the top 36. Nine drivers made 2nd round attempts with four going faster then their 1st round(#’s 01,7,60,13) and five going slower(#’s 25,9,44,90,71), none were able to crack the top 36. The five drivers/teams missing the race were: #44-Grissom(39th in owners points); #9-Compton(40th); #90-Stricklin(43rd); #13-Gordon(44th); #71-Marcis(45th). #01-Musgrave and #60-Bickle used provisionals and are now out of provisionals for the rest of the season.

• Saturday AM Practice is over at Phoenix. #10-Johnny Benson was the fastest in morning practice for the Dura Lube 500 with a speed of 129.612mph, which is slow compared to 1st Round Qualifying, the speed would had been 47 fatest of 48 speeds during 1st round. So things do not look good for many of the drivers who need to crack the top 36 to make the race. See the speeds at NOL. 2nd round qualifying is scheduled for 12:15pm/et(11-4-2000)
• Robby Gordon: what happened to Gordon in 1st round qualifying? Gordon lost control leaving the fourth turn on the start of his qualifying lap, slid into the wall with his right rear quarterpanel, turned into the
  inside wall on the frontstretch and then backed back into the frontstretch wall. They were working on a backup #13 Menards/Turtle Wax Ford for 2nd round qualifying(11-3-2000)

• First Round Qualifying is over at Phoenix for the Dura Lube 500. #2-Rusty Wallace wins the pole, his 9th of 2000, with a new track record of 134.178mph. 14 drivers broke the old track record set in 1999 of 132.714mph: #’s 2,99,77,10,1,36,55,6,18,02,50,17,93,26. #02-Ryan Newman will make his Winston Cup debut starting 10th. Other good runs by #50-Craven(starts 11th), #77-Pressley(starts 3rd) and #93-Blaney(starts 13th). #13-Robby Gordon had no recorded speed, no idea if he took a qualifying run or had a problem during the run. The five teams/drivers that would miss the race IF things stayed the same are: #44-Grissom(39th in owners points), #9-Compton(40th), #90-Sticklin(43rd), #13-Gordon(44th), and #71-Marcis(45th). #66-Darrell Waltrip is on the edge, qualifying 34th, but he has a provisional to use if needed, but would probably not use it and save it for Atlanta if needed. • Friday Practices are over: at PIR for the Dura Lube 500. Fastest in the AM Practice was #77-Robert Pressley at 132.802mph, slowest was #5-Terry Labonte at 128.351mph. Fastest in the PM Practice was #10-Johnny Benson at 132.993mph, slowest was #71-Dave Marcis at 128.792mph. Track record is 132.714mph by John Andretti last year. • Some Phoenix Stuff: There has never been a driver to win from the pole position at Phoenix. Ricky Rudd holds the record for starting the farthest back in the field and winning a race at PIR. Rudd started 29th to win the race in 1995. Nine drivers entered into this weekend’s race have won a race at PIR: Bill Elliott, Dale Earnhardt, Mark Martin, Terry Labonte, Bobby Hamilton, Ricky Rudd, Dale Jarrett, Rusty Wallace and Tony Stewart. The late Davey Allison won two races at PIR – more than any other driver(NASCAR PR)(10-30-2000)
• Pole Record: What is the record for the most poles in a season by one driver? In the modern era(1972 to present): Cale Yarborough had 14 poles in 31 starts(45%) during the 1980 season. The overall record was Bobby Isaac who had 20 poles in 50 starts(40%) during the 1969 season(Stock Car Racing Encyclopedia). So far in 2000, #2-Rusty Wallace has 8 in 31 races – 25.8%, that equates to approx 9 for the year, so they modern era record looks out of reach(10-22-2000)

• Phoenix to honor the Military: Phoenix International Raceway has announced a special discount offer for all military personnel for this weekend’s 4-day Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500 NASCAR event. Anyone who presents their valid military I.D. will receive free admission on Thursday, November 3, 2000(PIR PR)(10-30-2000)
• PIR Supermarket: Phoenix International Raceway has announced a new marketing partnership agreement with Albertsons that includes race sponsorship plus an all-new, mini-sized Albertsons grocery store at the track during NASCAR Weekend. The new Albertsons Raceway Market will be located in the center of the Cruise America Motorhome City area, at the southwest side of the property, to serve the thousands of NASCAR fans who stay in their motorhomes. It will open Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 at noon and remain open until 10 p.m. that night. Albertsons Raceway Market will then be open from 6:00 AM until 10:00 PM on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of race week.(PIR PR)(10-28-2000)
• Phoenix Grand Marshal and National Anthem: United States Senator Jon Kyl has been announced as the Grand Marshal for the November 2-5 Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500, Outback Steakhouse 200, and Albertsons/Osco Drug125 NASCAR weekend at Phoenix International Raceway and Capitol recording artist Steve Wariner has accepted an invitation from Phoenix International Raceway to sing the National Anthem prior to the start of Cup race(PIR PR)(10-25-2000)
• Phoenix Testing: Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman, spent two days at Phoenix International Raceway this past week working on qualifying setups in preparation for the upcoming Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race. Busch, who will be in the Cup series full time next season driving the #97 Roush Racing Ford Taurus. Busch is still unsure about 2001 sponsorship for the #97 Ford which currently carries the John Deere colors and he will have a special paint job for the Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500. Busch made contact with the wall during the two-day test but was not injured. Ryan Newman will be driving #02 ALLTEL-sponsored cars for Penske Racing South next season in a variety of series, 4 ARCA races, 12 Busch races and 7 Winston Cup races; and then, hopefully, a full Cup season in 2002 with an eye on Rookie-of-the-Year honors. Newman ran a top 25 time compared with last year’s times(PIR PR)(10-21-2000)
• Phoenix Four Races: Phoenix International Raceway has released its 2001 schedule which culminates with a new date and additional race for its fall NASCAR weekend. Next year, the NASCAR Winston Cup Checker Auto Parts/Dura Lube 500, NASCAR Busch Series Outback Steakhouse 200 and NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series 125 races will be joined by a 150 mile race for the NASCAR Craftstman Truck Series. The October 25-28, 2001 race weekend will be one week earlier than its traditional date on the calendar(PIR PR)(8-29-2000)
• Phoenix Race Date Moved back a week? To avoid a conflict with the CART season finale at California Speedway in 2001, the Cup race at Phoenix likely will be held in late October rather than the first Sunday in November. CART released its schedule last week, and next year’s finale is Nov. 4.(Arizona Republic) but supposedly Talladega and Rockingham already announced their Fall 2001 dates: Oct 21st/Talladega, Oct 28th/Rockingham.(8-12-2000)
• Rain: The Southern 500 was the fifth Cup race this season to be affected by rain having a two hour rain delay after 38 laps and being shortened to 328 laps instead of the 367 scheduled. Others: Las Vegas was shortened by 119 laps. Michigan fell six laps short in June. Pocono was postponed to the next day(a Monday). New Hampshire only went 273 of 300 laps in July(9-4-2000)
• How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

• Bickle in the #60 at Phoenix: Rich Bickle will drive the #60 Power Team Chevrolet fielded by Bessey Motorsports in next weekend’s NASCAR Winston Cup event at the Phoenix International Raceway(Power Team Site)(10-25-2000)
• Penske/Newman/ALLTEL News: Officials of ALLTEL and Penske Racing South announced today a 23-race “blended” 2001 schedule for driver Ryan Newman in preparation for a full NASCAR Winston Cup effort in the 2002 season. ALLTEL will sponsor the former USAC champion in a schedule next season that will see the 22-year-old Purdue University senior compete in four ARCA, twelve BGN and seven CUP events. The Ford Taurus cars and teams for all races will be fielded out of Penske Racing South’s Mooresville, N.C., shop. Penske Engines Company will supply all of the racing engines. ALLTEL also announced that Nokia will participate as an associate marketing sponsor for the 2001 racing season, continuing its racing affiliation with ALLTEL. Plans call for Newman to make his Cup debut driving an ALLTEL-sponsored Ford Taurus in this year’s Nov. 5 race at Phoenix. At Penske Racing South, Newman will become a teammate to former Cup champion and 53-time series race winner Rusty Wallace. Wallace likes what he sees in this young driver(Tom Roberts/ALLTEL PR) Newman will drive the #02 Ford(10-4-2000)

• #11 Scheme at Phoenix: hearing that Brett Bodine will be running a different paint scheme on the #11 Ralph’s Supermarkets Ford at Phoenix. Instead of the car being all red, the front end and roof will be white with red sponsor decals on the hood – red and black numbers on the roof AND from www.brettbodine.com: The #11 Ralphs Ford will showcase a new paint scheme for Phoenix. “This is one of our Ralphs’ “host” races where they entertain their guests and we wanted to have something a little different.”(10-28-2000)
• Pruett Scheme UPDATE: the #32 Tide Ford fielded by PPI Motorsports and driven by Scott Pruett was to run a special fan designed “Give the Kids the World” Tide car at Lowes Motor Speedway but failed to make the race, but the team announced that the car will return at Homestead to show off its multicolor livery(PPI Site)(10-7-2000)
  UPDATE: A special paint scheme will be run on the #32 Tide Ford driven by Scott Pruett at Phoenix(not Homestead as previously reported). The signature design benefits Give Kids The World. Heather Mason, 13, of Berkeley, Ill., created the outer-space themed design featured on the Tide Ford. Heather’s paint scheme was the winning entry in the annual Tide race car coloring contest at Give Kids The World. Heather, who is battling an inoperable brain tumor, first visited the Give Kids The World village in 1997. Why Phoenix and not Homestead as was planned after Lowes? Heather will have the opportunity to see her grandfather, Chuck Castle, of Mesa, AZ for the first time in three years during her visit to Phoenix for race weekend. • The Grinch car? UPDATE: hearing that Terry Labonte will run a “Grinch” paint scheme late in the season to promote the November release of the movie version of “The Grinch” starring Jim Carrey(8-19-2000)

STATS and STUFF

• Labonte needs 15th and…: If #18-Bobby Labonte finishes 15th in each of the remaining three races and leads a lap in one, or finishes two races 15th and one 14th, he will clinch the 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Drivers Championship, regardless of any other driver’s performance. How to figure this? #3-Dale Earnhardt is 2nd in drivers points with 4444 points. If he wins the final three races and leads the most laps, he would get 185 points a race(total 555) for a season ending total of 4999. Bobby Labonte has 4645 drivers points, so he would need to score 354 points to get 5000, an average of 118, a 15th place finish is worth 118 points. Labonte would tie Earnhardt in points in this scenario, but Earnhardt would win as he would have five wins to Labonte’s four. So Labonte’s ‘Magic Number’ is a 15th place finish and leading at least one race to get the five bonus points(Earnhardt presently has two wins, Labonte has four), or to make it simple, if Labonte finishes 14th or better, none of the above matters(10-22-2000)
• Did ya know? If Bobby Labonte wins the 2000 Winston Cup Championship, he and his brother Terry, who won it in 1984 and 1996, will be the first brothers to do so in Winston Cup history. There have been two father-son pairs; Lee and Richard Petty, and Ned and Dale Jarrett(9-3-2000)
  ALSO: Bobby would be the first former BGN champ(since the series began in 1982, not counting the old Sportsman division) to win the Winston Cup championship(10-1-2000)

When was the last time a team owner had three different drivers win in the same season? as Jack Roush has now done this year with Mark Martin, Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth.
