- The NASCAR Winston Cup Leader Bonus is $130,000 at Michigan for leading the points and winning the race.(Dale Jarrett last won the award, $10,000 at Daytona) The $340,000 annual award is paid at $10,000 per race to the point leader at the end of each event if he is also the winner. The award increases by $10,000 each week the it goes unclaimed. If the point leader is not the race winner at the end of the year, the balance of the award is distributed among the top-10 finisher in the point standings(6-5-2000)

- Some Michigan Notes: #94-Bill Elliott leads all active drivers with four wins in the Kmart 400 race at Michigan Speedway. Retired driver Cale Yarborough leads all drivers with six victories in this race at Michigan Speedway. The farthest back a race winner has started in the Kmart 400 is 20th when Ernie Irvan won his final Cup race in 1997. The Wood Brothers are the winningest car owners at Michigan Speedway, with their last win taking place in the 1991 Champion 400 with then-driver, Dale Jarrett. - Did ya know? The last time there were more than 11 different race winners in a season was 12 in 1994. The top five in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series point standings are separated by 191 points. Ward Burton has raced more laps than any other driver in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series this season. He has completed 4,326 of 4,331 laps raced in 2000. - KMart 400 at Michigan Winner: after the rains came for the second time, causing a red flag with 194 of 200 laps completed, the race was called and #20-Tony Stewart gets his 2nd race win in a row and of the year, Stewart’s fifth of his career. Stewart is the 2nd two time winner of 2000. Results at NOL and Racin’ Network(6-11-2000)
- Rain Delay: the Kmart 400 at Michigan is back on being televised on TNN now. Mayfield was penalized when during a pitstop when the tire got away from the pit crew, #99 also got penalized and both go back to the back of the longest line(6-11-2000)
- Noticed during the running of the Kmart 400 at Michigan. Since the actual race was the first time I saw all the cars this weekend, noticed that #6-Mark Martin has the Eagle One scheme this weekend(as mentioned and logged on the #6 News and Links page) and the #36-Ken Schader has the Pedigree Dog Food scheme on the car, it’s yellow with the blue logo, no M&M’s. Same scheme as Ernie Irvan used in June 1999. #40-Sterling Marlin has the Brooks and Dunn/Coors scheme, #13-Robby Gordon once again has the bright orange Burger King/Turtle Wax scheme(6-11-2000)
- Spencer misses meeting: #26-Jimmy Spencer missed the drivers meeting for the Kmart 400 and will have to go to the back of the field, but since he was going to start 40th, he won’t go back too far(CBS Pre-Race)(6-11-2000)
- Happy Hour: 38 minutes into Happy Hour practice at Michigan, Elliott Sadler, driver of the #21 Wood Brothers CITGO Ford, survived a crash where he barrel rolled at least a dozen times. Sadler was ok with the exception of some bruises and a cut on his tongue. Sadler will start in a backup car and fall to the back of the field before the start of the race(SpeedVision/RPM 2Night) #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr was the fastest at 181.287mph after being treated with IV’s as he has the flu. - Marcis 2nd Round: #71-Dave Marcis was going to make a 2nd round attempt to qualify for the Kmart 400 at Michigan but #9-Stacy Compton’s engine blew as he cross the finish line on his attempt, oiling the track with one car yet to run.
That one car belonged to Marcis. Initial word was that NASCAR would make Marcis wait until after the live-television IROC race soon to follow for his qualifying run. Marcis said that was not so. He said NASCAR offered to clean the track for him, but he declined as he said: “Mentally, I just can’t qualify with oil on the track,” he said. “It’s my decision. I can’t go 200mph on [a slick surface]. I don’t need a wrecked race car(SpeedVision)(6-11-2000)
- 2nd Round Qualifying is over at Michigan for the Kmart 400. #88-Dale Jarrett was the fastest at 186.727mph(would has been 17th in first round). Seven drivers made 2nd round attempts with five being faster(#’s 27,66,9,50,88) and two were slower(#’s 90 and 11). Three drivers raced into the top 36, #88-Jarrett, #27-Bliss(inproved from 36th to 27th) and #9-Compton. Looks like the #71 didn’t make a 2nd round attmept. Missing the race will be #66-Darrell Waltrip(42nd in owners point but out of provisionals), #71-Marcis(46th), and #50-Ricky Craven. See the starting grids at NOL and Racin’ Network(6-10-2000)
- Saturday Morning practice at Michigan is over. #60-Geoffrey Bodine was the fastest at 186.770mph. Only three drivers (#’s 60,9 and 27) went faster then the 36th best speed of 184.900mph(run by the #27). See the speeds at Racin’ Network and NOL(6-10-2000)
- 1st Round Qualifying is over for the Kmart 400. #18-Bobby Babonte wins the pole with a speed of 189.883mph, a new track record. #28-Ricky Rudd was 2nd. #88-Dale Jarrett had no speed as he blew an engine during his qualifying lap. If things stayed the same the three drivers who would miss the race are: #66-Darrell Waltrip(42nd in owners points but out of provisionals); #71-Dave Marcis(46th) and #50-Ricky Craven(47th). #27-Mike Bliss is in 36th but out of provisionals, if he falls below 36th, he would miss the race. - AM Practice is over at Michigan for the Kmart 400. #25-Jerry Nadeau was the fastest of the 46 cars with a speed of 187.568mph, just nipping the 2nd fastest, #22-Ward Burton. Three drivers/teams are out of provisionals: #27-Mike Bliss, #44-Kyle Petty and #66-Darrell Waltip, they all must make the top 36 by speed to make the race, for info on the provisionals, see my Provisional Status page. - How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph
