- Nine Different Winners: Jeff Gordon is the ninth different Winston Cup winner in the first nine races in 2000. This extends the NASCAR all time record of nine, beating last weeks eighth. The old record was seven that happened in 1991 when the first seven winners were Ernie Irvan, Dale Earnhardt, Kyle Petty, Ken Schrader, Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace and Darrell Waltrip. Also happened in 1964 when Ned Jarrett, Fireball Roberts, Wendell Scott, Richard Petty, Dan Gurney, Junior Johnson, Bobby Isaac won the first seven races that season. The 2000 winners: Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte, Jeff Burton, Dale Earnhardt, Ward Burton, Rusty Wallace, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mark Martin and now Jeff Gordon. The record only for the start of a season. - NAPA Auto Parts 500 at California: Winner is #12 Jeremy Mayfield in the Mobil One Ford. The 10th different winner in ten races this season. Mayfield’s 2nd career win and his first since the June 1998 Pocono race, a span of 61 races. In the last five seasons, there have been 11 different winners in each season. #18-Bobby Labonte moves back into the lead of the Winston Cup drivers points. Mayfield was the first driver to win at California Speedway who started outside of the top five. #17-Matt Kenseth, who came a few laps from winning the race ended up with his first top five finish of the 2000 season and his best career finish of 3rd, his previous best was 4th at Dover in Sept 1999. #28-Ricky Rudd(4th) also scored his first top five of the 2000 season. - Happy Hour practice is over at California. #12-Jeremy Mayfield was the fastest at 180.180mph. Speeds can be seen at NASCAR Online, That’s Racin’ and Racin’ Net(4-29-2000)
- 2nd Round Qualifying is over for the NAPA Auto Parts 500 at California Speedway. #44-Kyle Petty was the fastest at 183.057mph, next was #3-Dale Earnhardt at 182.718mph, who will be eligible to run the Bud Shootout Qualifier race next Feb as the Petty cars do not carry the Bud Pole Award sticker. This is the 2nd time this year Petty was fastest in 2nd round. Twelve drivers made 2nd round attempts with eight being faster(#’s 44,18,60,27,55,3,40 and 71), two were slower(#’s 16 and 90) and two had no speed listed (#’s 42 and 72). While the order changed a bit, the same three drivers in trouble after first round ended up missing the race: #90-Ed Berrier(45th in owners points), #71-Dave Marcis(46th) and #72-Dwayne Leik(59th), that means both Marcis Racing cars will go home. #27-Mike Bliss, 41st in owners points got the 7th and final provisional starting spot. - Saturday AM Practice is over at California. #13-Robby Gordon was the fastest at 185.251mph(would had been 6th in 1st round). Eleven drivers ran faster then the 36th fastest speed of 182.108mph of #3-Dale Earnhardt. Three of the drivers lower then 36th, #42-Irwin, #40-Marlin and #27-Bliss, ran faster then the 36th speed. Should see some 2nd round attempts today with some lineup shuffling. All three drivers who are slower then 36th and would miss the race if things stayed the same, #90-Berrier, #71-Marcis and #72-Leik were slow and will need to pick it up in 2nd round to make the field. - Qualifying Notes: #6-Mark Martin has the Eagles One colors on the #6 Ford; #40-Sterling Marlin has a colorful car with a light blue nose, purplish hood and Coors on the 1/4 panel, John Wayne once again is on the hood; the #72-Dwayne Leik Chevy has Benore Logistics on the 1/4 panels and for the most part the car is white, nothing on the hood; #27-Mike Bliss wrecked in the practice and had to qualify in a backup car(4-28-2000)
- 1st Round Qualifying is over at California Speedway for the NAPA Auto Parts 500. #31-Mike Skinner wins his first pole of the 2000 season with a track record of 186.061mph. Skinner is the 8th different pole winner in ten races in 2000 and qualifies for the 2001 Bud Shootout. 23 drivers broke the old track record of 183.753mph. #66-Darrell Waltrip ran a great lap and will start 7th and his teammate #26-Jimmy Spencer will be on the outside pole. #24-Jeff Gordon failed to qualify in the 1st round for the 2nd race in the row. If things stay the same the three drivers who would miss the race would be: #90-Ed Berrier(45th in Owners Points), #71-Dave Marcis(46th) and #72-Dwayne Leik(59th). - Friday CUP Practice is over at California Speedway. #1-Steve Park was the fastest with a speed of 186.605mph. The qualifying record is 183.753mph(Greg Sacks 1997), looks like that will be shattered as 28 drivers practiced at or over the old pole speed. - California Notes: All three Winston Cup Series races at California have been won from a top-five starting position. Darrell Waltrip posted his most recent top-five finish in the 1998 California 500 when finished fifth. Jeff Gordon and Terry Labonte have both posted three top-10 finishes at California, the only drivers to do so. Brett Bodine and Kyle Petty have finished 26th or worse in all three races at California(Speed Magazine)(4-25-2000)
- How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

- Earnhardt Inspection Troubles: For the second straight race, Dale Earnhardt and the Richard Childress Racing team had problems going through the inspection line Friday morning at California Speedway. NASCAR officials made Earnhardt’s crew redo the rear quarter panels and rear end of his #3 Chevrolet, much like they did two weeks ago at Talladega Superspeedway(goracing)(4-29-2000)
- Graves back to Cup..for a race UPDATE 3: hearing Brendan Gaughan’s Cup debut(#62 Team) will not happen at Vegas and will be delayed(2-24-2000)
UPDATE: Orleans Racing has made a last-minute decision not to enter next weekend’s CUP race at Las Vegas, delaying the debut of Brendan Gaughan. The reason: rain. The team was not able to secure a testing date as rain left only a few open test dates which were booked by the IRL. Gaughan was able to sneak onto the track for a brief shakedown session Thursday morning with one of the team’s Winston West engines in the new car and chassis, but some minor bugs were discovered. The team will focus on qualifying for the April 30 Cup race at California(Las Vegas Review)(2-25-2000)
UPDATE 2: Looks like the team will not run the Cup race at California. They are not listed on the NOL Entry list and a story in the LA Times by Shav Glick, mentions Gaughan will run the Winston West ran but no mention of the Cup race. UPDATE 3: Gaughan’s Orleans Racing team, which is owned by Bill McAnally and Michael Gaughan, had planned on entering next weekend’s NASCAR Winston Cup race in Fontana, Calif., but decided to delay its debut in that series. “We’re not going to show up and make fools out of ourselves, and we don’t need to spend the money and effort to go there and not have our stuff together,” Brendan Gaughan said. “I’m a big believer in trying and not giving up, but we don’t want to go there and do more harm than good.”(Las Vegas Review Journal)(4-27-2000)

- No #41 at California UPDATE: Larry Hedricks #41 Chevy team is not planning to make the trip to California Speedway this weekend. Gary Bradberry has been driving for the team since Rick Mast left after the race at Bristol on March 26. Crew chief Phillipe Lopez and engine builder David Evans followed Mast to A.J. Foyts operation. The former crew chief, Donnie Disharoon has been named crew chief for Hedrick. The team is taking the weekend off to regroup(Times-Dispatch)

- Trickle to drive #60? UPDATE yep: hearing Dick Trickle will drive the #60 Power Team Chevy, giving Geoffrey Bodine another week to heal from the injuries he incurred at Daytona in February in the CTS crash
UPDATE: Bessey Motorsports has announced that Dick Trickle will drive the #60 Power Team Chevrolet in the NAPA 500 at the California Speedway on Sunday. The #60 teams regular driver, Geoffrey Bodine, is continuing his successful recovery from injuries sustained in a February NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series wreck. Bodine is scheduled to return to the Power Team Chevrolet next weekend at Richmond. The team tested at the 3/4-mile track on Wednesday and Thursday with positive results. - California Testing Correction: Tyler Jet Motorsports did not test the #10 Winston Cup car at the California Speedway in Fontana, CA as I previosuly reported but tested the #50 Winston West car Johnny Benson will be driving there on Saturday. The car will be fielded by us at Tyler Jet, with the normal crew, including crew chief James Ince, with a sponsor to be announced later this week. The #50 was assigned to the team by NASCAR for the Winston West races they run in 2000(4-24-2000)
- California Testing UPDATE 2: #75-Wally Dallenbach is at the California Speedway testing this week(Wally Dallenbach Site)(4-19-2000)
UPDATE: #32-Scott Pruett and BGN driver #97-Anthony Lazarro are also testing. Heard that Dallenbach ran a fast lap of 183.908mph(4-20-2000)
UPDATE 2: #4-Bobby Hamilton and #32-Scott Pruett both tested above the track record of 183.753mph held by Greg Sacks in 1997. - #33 Special Paint Scheme: Akzo Nobel Coatings has been the official paint supplier to Andy Petree Racing since Andy purchased the team from Leo Jackson. The paint on the #33 Chevy that Joe Nemechek will drive in the NAPA Auto Parts 500 at the California Speedway is a special effects version of Sikkens Autobase basecoat. Manufactured by Akzo Nobel Coatings, it was developed in conjunction with Flex Products, Inc. and utilizes their ChromaFlair Light Interference Pigments. The paint appears to change color depending on the angle from which it is viewed. This new Sikkens Autobase basecoat will be available in the Fall of 2000. UPDATE 2: #4-Bobby Hamilton and #32-Scott Pruett both tested above the track record of 183.753mph held by Greg Sacks in 1997. UPDATE 2: Beginning with this weekend’s California 500 at the California Speedway, as well as next weekend’s race in Richmond, Robby Gordon’s normally bright-colored, Duracell/Turtle Wax Ford Taurus will take on a
different level of recognition, sporting a neon orange paint scheme with Fred Flintstone’s trademark, triangle spots, courtesy of Universal Studios and Burger King. It’s all part of Universal Studios’ kick-off for the theatrical release of “The Flintstones, Viva Rock Vegas” on Friday, April 28(Team Gordon PR)(4-25-2000)
