In 1999, #18-Bobby Labonte made Lowes Motor Speedway history by completing a pole “triple crown” at the 1.5-mile superspeedway. It began in May when Labonte claimed the pole for The Winston, NASCAR Winston Cups all-star race. Five days later, during pole qualifying for the Coca-Cola 600, Labonte proved his success in The Winston qualifying was no fluke by once again finishing on top, turning in a lap of 185.230 mph, and setting an event record in the process. Winning back-to-back poles for The Winston and Coca-Cola 600 was impressive in itself. Only two drivers had accomplished that feat in the 15-year history of The Winston Bill Elliott in 1987 and Jeff Gordon in 1996. But Labonte went one better and accomplished what no driver had ever done at Lowes Motor Speedway winning the pole for the UAW-GM Quality 500 in October earning a place in the Lowes Motor Speedway history books.
