UNC Charlotte has awarded its Alan Kulwicki Memorial Scholarship to Ron Janney, a high school student and champion race car driver from Estell Manor, NJ(near Atlantic City and Jayski). Officials with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. will make the formal presentation of the scholarship at 5:15 p.m. Saturday on the prerace stage near the start/finish line of Lowe’s Motor Speedway. With the financial support of R.J. Reynolds, UNCC established the Kulwicki Scholarship in 1994 to commemorate the dedication to education of the late Winston Cup champion and engineer Alan Kulwicki. UNCC’s William States Lee College of Engineering awards the four-year scholarship to a high-school senior who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and has an affiliation with auto racing. Janney is ranked fourth in his class at St. Augustine Preparatory School in Richland, N.J., and the 18-year-old began racing sprint cars in the Super Sportsman class last season(That’s Racin’)(5-19-2000)
