New Driver: 24-year-old Rodney Childers of Mooresville. NC, who races Late Model Stock and Slim Jim All Pro Series driver, hopes to make his first BGN start this weekend in Myrtle Beach, S.C. as he attempts to qualify for Saturday’s Myrtle Beach 250. Childers will drive the #49 Chevy, owned by Jay Robinson (Monroe, N.C.), with sponsorship help from Southern Marine (Savannah, GA). It will be his first attempt at the BGN. Childers, who started racing go-karts in 1990, won 5 WKA (World Karting Association) National Championships and 6 state titles before moving on to Legends Cars and the Late Model Stock Division. In one full season in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series, in 1998, Childers garnered 8 wins. 15 top-fives, 16 top-tens and 10 Bud Pole Positions. In 1999, Childers stepped up to the NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series where he captured 2 Bud Pole awards by setting 2 new track qualifying records. He logged 4 top-five and 5 top-IO finishes in route to 10th-place in the final point standings-2nd in the final Rookie points. In addition to preparing for as many as four BGN starts in 2000, Childers has also drove for his car owner Jay Robinson in the ARA (American Racing Association) All-star Series, featuring Late Model Stock Cars which compete throughout the southeast.
