Kenny Irwin, driver of the #42 BellSouth/Sabco Chevy, died Friday as a result of a crash during practice at New Hampshire. Irwin was 30. Irwin’s car went straight at speed into the third-turn wall at the 1.058mi oval. The right-side wheels rode up the fence, flipping the car onto the driver’s side. The car then skidded into the wall at the apex of the corner and fell onto its roof. Rescue workers reached the site quickly. The first to the driver’s window waved frantically for assistance. Irwin was removed from the car within five minutes, was taken briefly to the track infield hospital, then taken out of the track to Concord Hospital. The hospital provided the official announcement three hours later. In a statement, the hospital stated, “NASCAR Winston Cup driver Kenny Irwin, 30, passed away today due to multiple injuries sustained in a practice accident at New Hampshire International Speedway.”(SpeedVision)(7-7-2000)
