The drivers shook down their Intrepids with the new Dodge engine thats still awaiting NASCAR approval. Both Marlins and Comptons Dodges were fitted with restrictor plates and NASCARs aerodynamic package that was recently used in the Winston 500 at Talladega. Marlin and Compton were both pleased with the results of the test and said the Intrepid picked up speed from its recent test session at Daytonas sister track. At least 10 teams will field Dodge Intrepids for the season-opening Daytona 500 and preparing for the seasons biggest and most prestigious race is no easy chore. Marlin is confident that the car and engine can compete for a victory in the restrictor-plate race. They had a little trouble in Talladega, but it was a core that slipped in a block, said Marlin, a two-time Daytona 500 champion. That got fixed. Casey has been to Kentucky and theyve run like 1,400 miles on a motor turning 9,200 rpms(DIS PR)(11-2-2000) UPDATE 4: hearing that the teams used Ford engines at the testing at Daytona(11-3-2000)
