Jeff Burton wins Coca Cola 600: #99-Burton wins his first races of the 2001 season, the Coca-Cola 600 and puts him in the 2002 The Winston. Pole sitter #02-Ryan Newman crashed on lap 12 when he got loose and finished 43rd. The top four starters finished 26th or worse (#02-43rd, #24-29th, #66-37th, #9-26th). #20-Tony Stewart who officially started 12th but had to drop to the tail end of the field finished 3rd and was coming strong at the end. Stewart completed all 1,100 miles/600 laps and seemed fine after the Coca Cola 600. #88-Dale Jarrett who used his first provisional ever with Robert Yates Racing(1995) was able to finish 8th and increased his points lead to 75 over #24-Jeff Gordon.
