Akins’ wife, Julie, has been in very poor health, and Kranefuss’ involvement this year with the team has allowed the Winder, Ga.-based businessman to concentrate on her and their family. Akins will retain ownership of Christian Elder’s operation, which is expected to continue running a partial Busch Series schedule in 2002.
