More Gordon and Gordon: Jeff Gordon had a surprise visitor at his private championship party Nov. 29 when Robby Gordon, who punted him out of the lead to win the Nov. 23 race at New Hampshire, showed up. According to witnesses, the two drivers chatted about the incident with the intent of putting it behind them. Jeff Gordon, meanwhile, says the incident might have been a blessing in disguise. After he chased down Robby and rammed his car from behind, his fan base suddenly began to swell. “I gained more fans over that deal than I did by winning races all year long,” he said. “I had a lot of people approach me and say, ‘It was great to see that intensity,’ and, ‘We know that you’ve got it in you.'”(Winston Cup Scene – need sub to read)(12-6-2001)
