#8-Bill Lester became just the second African American to win a pole in a major NASCAR series – and the first since 1962 – turning a lap at 175.593mph Thursday night to claim the top starting position for Friday night’s Hardee’s 200 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The late Wendell Scott was the last African American to win a pole, qualifying first in a Grand National (now Winston Cup) race at Savannah, Ga., on July 20, 1962. On the outside pole was #2-Jason Leffler at 175.530, followed by #6-Kevin Harvick, #50-Jon Wood and #4-Bobby Hamilton.
