Just a few days ago Kirk Shelmerdine added another victory to his modest resume as a driver, winning Charlotte’s ARCA race. Today, the winning car – a vintage three-year-old model, in a sport where last month’s model is usually already out of date – is in the middle of Shelmerdine’s modest shop. The shop is right across the street from Richard Childress’ spiffy new shop [Welcome NC], a giant racing factory in the heart of Childress-ville, a massive conglomeration of NASCAR shops that is a far, far cry from that Waughtown shop where Childress started. Shelmerdine continues to say that he’s a racer and not a crew chief, even though he hasn’t been doing much of either this season. He ran for Junie Donlavey at Daytona in February but failed to finish high enough in his 125 to make the 500. He ran the Winston Open in May. And he won last week at Charlotte. A Hooter’s sponsorship vanished quickly, leaving Shelmerdine picking and choosing his spots. And pondering his future.
