after 37 of 48 driver went out to qualify, hard rain hit the Watkins Glen International Track and caused cancellation of qualifying. So the field was set by the rules book, so the first 35 drivers are set by 2005 Owners Points, then by race team attempts, with ties broken by the Owners Points. So the top five are #20-Tony Stewart, #48-Jimme Johnson, #16-Greg Biffle, #2-Rusty Wallace, #97-Kurt Busch. Two drivers who had made the race via qualifying, #39-Scott Pruett and #87-Chris Cook, missed the race as they didn’t have enough qualifying attempts to make the race. The other driver missing the race was #27-Tom Hubert who was a post entry. #50-Jorge Goeters will make his first career Nextel Cup start. Pruett will run the #40 Coors Light Dodge for Sterling Marlin who is missing the race to be with his ill father in Tennessee, David Stemme was going to qualify and race the car.
