Hamlin wins pole at Phoenix:

#11-Denny Hamlin won the pole for the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway, for his first career pole in his 6th race. The pole puts Hamilin in the Budweiser Shjootout and he is the 17th pole winner of 2005. 2nd in points, #48-Jimmie Johnson will start 2nd, followed by #99-Carl Edwards, #16-Greg Biffle and #18-Bobby Labonte. Points leader #20-Tony Stewart starts 9th and #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. starts 19th. Fastest in Happy Hour, #12-Ryan Newman, who was wrecked late in that practrice session, qualified 11th. #32-Bobby Hamilton Jr. is the highest non top-35 team, starting 7th. #78-Jerry Robertson makes his first Nextel Cup race. Seven drivers failed to make the race: #4-Mike Wallace, #51-Brian Reffner, #00-Derrike Cope, #92-PJ Jones, #66-Kevin Lepage, #02-Brandon Ash and #89-Morgan Shepherd.
