Rusty Wallace is giving son Steve plenty of racing opportunities this year in anticipation of starting him in Nextel Cup the latter part of 2007. He’ll run him in the remaining 11 Busch races this season and in some ARCA events. “It’s all about seat time in the car,” said Rusty. “We made a commitment to go racing. Steve is our driver.” As part of the program, Wallace will send his son to the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving in Arizona. “We’ll get Boris Said to teach him road racing,” Wallace said. “We’ll keep cramming racing down his throat.” Greg Wallace, who is 26 and a Wake Forest graduate, raced late models around the Southeast for a few years before deciding he wanted to finish college and get into sports management. Presently, he’s in charge of the www.rustywallace.com Web site, which has won international awards. As a spotter at his brother’s ARCA and Busch races, he knows where Steve is on the track at all times and where he’s headed in his racing career. “There’s no doubt he’s got the natural speed and ability to get the job done,” said Greg of Steve’s performance so far. “If anything, we got to teach him to tone down and finish races. We talk four or five times a day. He’s just crazy about racing and calling a million, zillion girls. Sometimes, I think he may have sucked in too much carbon monoxide.” Next year, Rusty Wallace, who is also working as an analyst for ABC/ESPN covering the Indy Racing League, has mapped out a full Busch season for Steve. And he says he’ll start his son in the final five Cup events of the year.(Detroit Free Press)(8-18-2006)
